Games crashes after July Updates
by Guest Jonah AJ- 1 reply

Since installing the various July updates all the DX9 games crash on loading and shut down. I am running Win XP Pro on a Intel 6800 Extreme Core Duo 2 and 2GB RAM. I remember that there was a similar problem with an update some time ago and a fix was produced that you could download to fix the problem. Anyone else had similar problems or know of a way to correct this behaviour?

Can't boot after converting to logical disk
by Guest DennisQWilson@gmail.com- 2 replies

The header pretty much says it all. I need to convert the partition containing Windows XP to a logical disk, but when I do, the operating system won't finish loading. This probably has to do with the HAL or something, but darned if I can figure out what. (The drive letters stay the same.) Can anyone tell me how I can get my currently installed Windows XP environment to load from a logical disk without reinstalling? Thanks.

WinXP: Help and Support issue
by Guest C J.- 0 replies

Okay... On my girlfriends PC, when opening help and support sometimes, and filling in the search bar, and clicking the arrow... she'll get a Search Results box w/ three items appearing on left side of screen. 1. Suggested Topics, 2. Full-text search Matches, and 3. Microsoft Knowledge Base. Just now, I typed in Format to see what she's complaining about. Search Results shows: Suggested topics 15 results, Full-text search matches 15 results, Microsoft Knowledge Base shows 0 results. For a topic as critical as Formatting, you'd think MSKB would show X number of results, on top of the 30 already shown above it right? Now - typing in KB article n…

6 Months Later, a Report Card on Vista
by Guest 98 Guy- 0 replies

I wonder why Vista's aggressive digital rights management wasn't mentioned in this story. I like this point: "Everybody wants there to be a repeat of Windows 98 - the excitement, the sales volume, the rate of growth and everything else" said Michael Cherry, an analyst for the independent research group Directions on Microsoft. " Yea, and I bet they'd like to be able to repeat the relative security that Win-98 gave to users vs that abomination known as XP. As expected, MS will spend very little to advertise or market Vista, since it will come by default on new systems because people will have no choice. It will take 5 years before it reaches …

Recycle bin - interesting problems
by Guest JR- 0 replies

After a recent crashed install of norton systemworks, completely lost the recycle bin - probably from a lot of manually deleted registry entries. Couldn't use the registry backup just before the install as it would not ''find'' the keyboard (even though device present). ugh? Could create shortcut to re/bin but showed as hidden and could be edited.... Went through earlier registry and exported all the keys relating to th re/bin on the desktop (namespace and the clsid entries) and imported to current registry. Now have desktop re/bin back with full and proper function. However, do NOT have same in explorer view. For example, rename desktop re/bin t…

by Guest el Diablo- 2 replies

Hello, I have a laptop that the hard drive died in yesterday. I have an old hard drive (two years old) from the laptop that has the OS loaded and all my programs. I had replaced it with a larger drive and put it away for a backup. Anyway, since I've put it back in I can't access the WORKGROUP on the network. There are two other PC's an my home network, one runs Windows 2000, the other runs Windows XP Pro, as well the laptop runs Windows XP Pro. All networking worked fine before the hard drive crashed. The drive I put back in used to access these two PC's as well. I looked on Microsoft's site at article 318030 which told me to make sure these two items…

dvd-rom not spinning up
by Guest Chuck- 4 replies

I recently upgraded my PC's drives, adding a DVD-RW while keeping the original DVD-ROM as a secondary drive. Here's the problem: while the drive shows up in My Computer, and is "functioning normally" in Device Manager, it won't read anything. I insert a disc (DVD/CD, doesn't matter), it'll spin up for a few seconds, then spin down, and that's it. As far as my PC is concerned, there's no disc in there. HELP!! 8-G

I tried unplugging and plugging back in a couple of times. It took, but when pc went to retrieve setting from phone, pc just rebooted. I upgraded to 4.5, same exact thing happened. Can anyone tell me what is wrong, or at least send me in the right direction??
