I was able to fix my system failure to run the 1.1 update. Thanks to Froto and a few others to numerous to mention. Another question.. When you run windows update does microsoft know what software I have installed and only send me the updates that I need? Example...If I have a software that needs .Net Framework 2.0, will they then send me the updates for that version. If I don't need 1.1 then they won't send it? Am I dreaming? Thanks.

I've got an AD network with 2003 standard servers and XP workstations. I want to be able to send messages to workstations that are connected for things like server reboot warnings but I read a couple of warnings about having the messenger service running. Is this considered an acceptable risk by most admins and is there a better utility than 'net send'? Thanks Paul

Computer Starting to Slowdown!!!?
by Guest The Pete- 3 replies

My computer is approximately 2 months old and now has just recently started to slow down after 3-4 hrs of use after each bootup. I have scanned for viruses, malware/spyware, uninstalled unecessary programs, defragmentized the hard drive, run diskcheck and cleared cookies and temporary files from Internet Explorer. After a few hrs the system slows down substantially thus making it difficult to browse the net and switch inbetween programs. I am currently running: Windows XP SP2 (with all updates), Pentium Core Duo 2.4ghz, 2 Gigs of Ram, Norton Internet Security. Any thoughts?

Removing Past Selections From the Open File Dialog Box
by Guest Bill- 1 reply

Whenever I select "Open File" in Quicktime, DivX, etc... and I click on the "File Name" box, a drop down list appears of recent files. This seems to be a list of the first files that I have used and this list does not seem to update to reflect new selections. I have tried to remove them from within each program but this seems to be a Windows related issue. How do I delete these file names so more recent selections can be recorded? Bill.

I have two XP Pro Computers... This morning I was notified by MS automatic update that 9 security updates were available for installing..... On one computer KB928366 kepts installing over and over again... when I power down I receive a message that an update must be installed... Yet when I boot back up the automatic updater tells me I have another update available, which is always for KB928366 - .NET Framework v1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update. There seems to be a never ending circle here... My second computer is behaving differently after installing the security updates plus two optional ones.... it is now doing a boot then reboot - over and over a…

Windows Explorer display mode
by Guest horst engel- 0 replies

I set the display of all directories in Windows Explorer in the detailed mode. But there are several directories I prefer to be displayed in the icon mode. I have been able to teach Explorer to show about 10 directories in this mode, but not any more. When I exit and reenter in the same window I have again the detailed mode. Is there any way to set a greater number of directories to be seen in the mode I like more? Thanks for your help Horst
