by Guest colblip- 9 replies

Hello, All! Anytime I put my machine on Standby it goes into Standby and then immediately comes out of Standby. Any thoughts as to why this would occur? Is there some setting I'm missing? Thanks, Colonel Blip E-mail: colonel.blip.at.bigfoot.com

hibernation mode always used
by Guest john d hamilton- 8 replies

When i switch on my pc from its' hibernate mode it boots up very quickly. Much quicker than when i turn it off in the conventional way. Since in hibernation, i cannot hear the cooling fan running; does that mean also that the hard drive is not spinning? If that's the case, would there be any reason *never* to switch it off in the conventional manner; but to always use the hibernate mode? Thanks for advice.

Hi running win xp pro on new dell d830 laptop. set up the computer name and the user name for laptop. computer name is LAPTOPRE, same as user name. but when i view the document and settings folder, the user folder is named "Jason" and is the only folder listed. this is how i initially set it up. wondering if i can rename the subfolder "Jason" to Laptop? when i login as administrator and try to rename i get error message access is denied. when i navigate to the control panel/user account, the user Jason is not listed, only user listed is Laptop. is there any way i can rename the subfolder "Jason" under documents and settings?

by Guest Ping- 3 replies

Hi all, I wonder what is the maximum size for my eventlog. I have read on Technet that 300 Mo is the best practices. But Is it 300 for one eventlog (so 3 * 300 for all my eventlogs) or is 300 is the sum of all eventlogs ? Thanks for your help. (I use W2003 Std & Ent 32 & 64 bits SP2) -- P.A.

What really happens when Ctrl Alt Del is pressed?
by Guest Jimmy- 1 reply

We have an application (specifically Oracle Forms through JInitiator on I.E.7) which when opened for the first time everything runs really slow. The response is really bad, e.g. when typing a character it displays on screen after 2 secs. Strangely after we press ctrl alt del and then cancel, everything starts running normally. We are running on Sunray thin clients with Windows terminal services. The question is what does really happen when you press ctrl alt del? Why is ctrl alt del fixing this problem? Thanks, Demetris

Or are there other suggestions for fixing it? W2k IE6 all patches installed -- --------------------------------------------------------------- …

Server 2008 Bug: Default Policy forces null-password accounts.
by Guest Anteaus- 0 replies

Just a quick note about a flaw in default policies which I've discovered: If used in the standalone-server role with no AD, Windows Server 2008 sets a default password policy enforcing complexity-rules, but NOT requiring a minimum length. This is an unsafe combination, and should be changed. Where useraccounts are created by way of a batchfile or script, this condition may lead to some or all accounts having null passwords. This fact may not be realised by the operator, but even if it is, it may then prove difficult to correct the situation. Example commands: C:\> net user fred /add Creates a new account with a null password. This should no…

Memory re-cap. . .
by Guest Tony Sperling- 11 replies

O.K. - I just came back home with 4GB 1066Mhz Dominator RAM replacing the 2GB 800 Mhz I had - naturally, the machine didn't boot. I removed half and it boots fine, Windows is running, but now I cannot remember the specifics of successfully adding the remaining 2GB. This is XP x64 - the board supports 8GB in 4 slots and the sticks are 4x1024 units. This is the repaired machine with a new MB and the BIOS version is roughly a year old and a relatively late version but not the latest one. Tony. . .

c:\winnt\installer subfolders, can they be deleted?
by Guest jbclem- 0 replies

I'm trying to clean up my hard drive and notice a lot of subfolders under c:\winnt\installer, they have names that are long series of numbers, and in these subfolders are files, some of which have names of programs I've installed. I'd like to know if it's essential to keep these files/subfolders, or if I can just delete them to save space. Does anyone know? John
