8800 + ATIs = unhappy XP x86, but okay under x64? [long]
by Guest Homer J. Simpson- 7 replies

Hi all, I have a machine that initially had XP x86, an Nvidia 6600GT (PCI-Express) and a couple of PCI ATI cards (a Radeon 7000 and a 7500, to be exact) for multi-monitor purposes. I installed XP x64 shortly after it came out back in 2005 (?), which I've been using almost exclusively after about a week or two of slow migration. x64 has actually been reinstalled on this machine a couple of times since (now being my primary OS), and I've only rebooted to XP x86 a few times here and there (mainly, to use partition resizing tools that don't work yet on x64). The machine's been running fine with this configuration for years. About two months ago I repl…

Win98se cursors & themes
by Guest Greg T- 0 replies

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Win98se themes and cursors in WinXP. I have two drives hooked up, one with WinXP Pro SP2 and the other Win98se. Can I copy cursor and theme files from Win98 to WinXP without a problem. I have done this but it seems(not sure) that some of the cursors give me trouble with the cursor locking up after awhile(not all the time). I have done some investigation and it seems that the Nature cursors from Win98 Plus package work alright. I have checked with Paint Shop Pro and for the most part those cursors are 4bit/16 color cursors. When I switch to Travel(8bit/256 color) cursors I will get lockups after awhile. I could go …

Speeding up WE searches
by Guest Dan- 5 replies

My 2.4 Ghz core 2 duo XP Home machine which I built has 6 hdds (4 sata's & 3 ide's, no raid config at present) with a total of 10 partitions, ~ 2,000 gig of space, about half of which is currently full, mostly with thousands of multimedia files. Searching for a single file can be fairly time consuming. Not awful, but t takes several minutes & I wish it were faster. I have the indexing service turned on, but this has not noticeably shortened search times. Is there any other way to speed up searches across so much hdd space? TIA Dan

32-bit server, mixed 32/64-bit clients?
by Guest Hurricane Andrew- 0 replies

What are the issues that I should anticipate in such a setup? Specifically, I'd like to tread slowly in the move to 64-bit. I have a simple home network setup: 1 Longhorn 32-bit standard server 1 dual boot Vista/XP client 32-bit (main PC, Vista default OS) 1 dual boot XP/Vista client 32-bit (kids PC, XP default OS) All are on a single domain. Both clients are capable of 64-bit. The server is as well, but I'd like to hammer out any 64-bit issues, quirks, etc. on a client before messing with the server, plus most of my kids' games and such aren't ready for the 64-bit plunge, so their PC will be stuck on 32-bit XP Pro for the foreseeable future. …

I have 4 compaq deskpro PC's that came with XP Pro. There are stickers on the computers with the XP CD keys. I want to take those keys and convert them to product ID's to replace the current one on the registry. Any ideas how to do this? The current product ID in the registry is from my companys windows image NOT the actual one on the PC's. The company is giving these to employees now and does not want their VL key to be left on the PC's.

by Guest Umar Reyi- 0 replies

I have a Toshiba Tecra A4 laptop running Windows XP Pro. It has 2 USB ports. When I connect a mouse to any of the USB ports, I see the following message (displayed only once, not consistenly each time I connect the mouse to the USB port): USB Device Not Recognized One of the USB ports has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. I checked the Device Manager and verified that (1) USB Root Hub and (2) USB Universal & Enhanced Host Controller are working. Simply put, only my touchpad seems to work. However the mouse that I am using does not appear to work. Besides the mouse that I was originally using, I have tried 3 different mouse, but…

Is it always required that the pagefile is 1.5 x system memory??
by Guest tlyczko- 0 replies

Is it possible and reasonable to reduce the pagefile in a server with 4GB RAM (3 GB usable, /3GB switch, Windows Server 2003 Standard) to 2GB from 4GB?? What are the performance monitors I need to look at in Performance Monitor to know how much the pagefile is really being used?? These servers are for Exchange 2003 (also DC, file/print) and SQL 2005. OR -- is it better to me to just move the pagefile to the larger one of the two partitions on the server?? That is, from C:\ to D:\?? (C is smaller than it should be, D is quite large) I know that the servers will eventually have to be rebuilt or replaced but if I can move or resize the pagefile, I can put thi…

I got a pc that had a previous owner, It has Win XP Pro. I have deleted all user accounts but there are still folders and processes with that person's name. I changed the computer name as well. When I go to task manager it still shows many processes running with the old person's name. There is a folder in "documents and settings" with the old person's name that I cannot delete. Help! I want to remove ALL traces of this person from the computer - without reformatting the harddrive.
