Failed Domain controller
by Guest David- 0 replies

Hi all, I walked in on a new job, they had two DCs Win 2K and one has been dead for weeks, no backups…. One DC is operational. I bought a new server Win 2003 R2 server and all hot fixes are installed. Can not join the domain because the failed DC name is the same is the new box….I thought I should force removing the old DC name from AD and seize any FSMO role to the existing DC which is win 2k advanced server. I plan to run adprep / forestprep and domainprep and run dcpromo on the new box. I would like to know if you think my plan will work before I start this process, and learn how to remove a filed DC from active directory… Thanks

Account lockout in win2k3 server
by Guest cyberdude- 5 replies

I'm a relative newbie to win2k3 server and AD, so bear with me. I have 1 or 2 power users who like to stay logged in for long periods of time. What generally happens is that at some point they logoff/reboot and are then locked out. I have to then go to the server and unlock their account. I have searched technet for an answer to this, but the links/answers they had seemed aimed at password policy (using gpedit.msc) not domain policy. Nothing I've found so far addresses this particular issue. Any help would be appreciated. Tom -- Tom Zucker-Scharff Systems Administrator

XP Home Taking Forever to boot. How to troubleshoot.
by Guest Bob Semancowitz- 3 replies

My customer has an HP Laptop running XP home. XP is patched to current levels. When the system boots, the computer loads the hardware profile that we select (we set up multiple hardware profiles to select various network configurations), and we quickly see the XP splash screen. Soon thereafter, we get the login window. Once we enter the username and password, it takes forever to see the desktop. We see blank wallpaper colors, but no icons. I'm guessing it takes a good minute to get to a point where we can do things with the computer. We do have 50 processes loading, but there is a point in this load cycle where the hard disk doesn't do anything …

Hi everyone, I have a server running Windows 2003. I have set up the POP3 service according to this guide: http://www.ilopia.com/Articles/WindowsServer2003/EmailServer.aspx I've set up the mail server using my domain, configured the email server with the appropriate settings, added a mail box, and configured the smtp server. I then configured outlook express just so I can test the email is working correctly. I have enabled the setting "My server requires authentication" but I get this error: The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xx...@xxxx.co.nz'. Subject 'Test', Account: …

I hope the following makes sense. I have a 2003 standard server setup running as a Terminal Server to allow our other location (several miles away) to access our main SBS 2003 server and run our Mfg/accntg software. We have a program called 'Check Factory' that allows the printinf of forms and checks to blank stock. In order to get this software to work Trans-Micro (the makers of Check Factory) have a detailed procedure that allows multiple Terminal Server users to run the software at the same time. Here is the setup procedure that should allow the software to print to the correct client printer (which I have followed): 01: Install the Check Fa…

We moved our Windows 2000 TS machine from an NT4.0 domain to an active directory domain with a mix of 2000 and 2003 domain controllers. The domain functional level is Windows 2000 native. We realized after the fact that the licensing server could not longer run on the Windows 2000 TS server and moved it to a Windows 2003 domain controller in the same site with the help of the MS clearing house. XP clients that previously connected to the terminal server still work fine. New clients get the message 'remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol'. We tried deleting the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicen…

Searching the Directory for Shared Printers
by Guest James U- 0 replies

I tried to add network a printers to a workstation by clicking Start > Search > Find Printers and then clicked Find Now. In the past I got all the printers shared from each of my print servers. Now I am only getting shared network printers on workstations throughout the domain, not any on the print servers. All the printers are shared correctly on the servers and I can still map a printer by browsing the server (\\SERVERNAME) and selecting connect. Any idea why all the print server printers will not display? Any idea how to get them back? Thanks, James
