Unable to run setup.exe on Storage Server 2003 R2
by Guest kc2kth@arrl.net- 1 reply

It appears that I am unable to install software on Windows Storage Server 2003 R2. Specifically I am trying to install the Exchange System Tools as we require the MAPI piece for a file management related service. Attempting to kick off the Exchange installation I receive the message: Windows cannot open this program since it has been disabled. >From searches I've deduced that Storage Server is based on 2003 Server Web Edition and this is a limitation (understandably) built into Web edition. However, this isn't a web server. This is a file server that I believe should behave more like one. Has anyone else run into this and, although I'm quite certain I k…

I had set my system to synchronize some of my folders on another server a couple of years ago but can't remember how I did it. Does XP do this or would I have had to get a 3rd party program to get this? Thanks, Tom

Removable Storage Service

I am using NT Backup for automated backup but for some reason the Removable Storage Service stops after a backup runs. Is there a way to schedule the starting of the Removable Storage Service via a scheduled batch file? I tried using the path for the executable (in properties for the Removable Storage Service) but it did not start the service. Thanks.

I had this problem with one of my computers now it’s on the other. Looking for some help. When I try to start up word or send a message in outlook I get a box that looks like something is being uploaded and a message that says “Word is currently recovering your documents” then another message says “Word failed to start correctly last time….” Then “Do you want to start in safe mode?” Is this a Bug, Worm, Virus or something you can help me with? Any help would be appreciated. Already tried the following; Open Word:- 1]On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair. To restore the program shortcuts to the Windows Start menu, make sure the Restore my shortc…

Re: Repair does not work! I did not have the problem you did concerning the Hal.dll. But three times in the past three years I have encountered the "missing ASMS file" error -- using different XP setup CDs (all legal), and several different kinds of DVD and CD ROM drives. You ask, "can it be that an installation disk ask for files it did not put into the CD to begin with ... "? I think the answer to that question is yes. I would be interested to know what year appears on the Windows setup CD you used, as I suspect the bug might have been fixed sometime in 2004 or later. I am only interested in the year if it's a valid Microsoft hologram type CD you…

Files and Settings transfer wizard
by Guest Robert- 5 replies

Hello All, On a regular basis, I use the File & Settings transfer wizard to back up my settings to a "slave back up drive" in my desktop computer. Well, my primary drive crashed last week, and now I've replaced it with a new one, and reloaded XP, along with all my old programs, and all my saved files that I regularly back up to my slave drive. So now I want to also go to my slave drive and migrate my old settings that I've saved, onto the new drive, just like everything else I had backed up and successfully migrated onto the new hard drive. So I go to the folder where the settings are stored on the slave drive to make sure they are there, I can…

I use a WinXPSP2 remote host to connect to my home office via a PPTP-VPN connection to a Win2003SP2 RRAS server that is behind my firewall. Both the server and remote host use a virtual WAN adapter, configured via the RRAS service, instead of separate physical adapters. Occasionally, once the connection is established, I cannot reliably access network resources via a UNC path (\\server\share). I receive a network path error. However, if I terminal in to the target server (also by name, not IP) via mstsc.exe (RDP 5.2), I can connect just fine. Must the RPC Locator service be running on the remote host to ensure UNC access reliability? -- JCB…

GRE 47 pass-through and VPN connection reliability
by Guest JCB- 2 replies

Is there any way to ensure reliable establishment of a PPTP VPN connection when (apparently) some I'net routers do not permit GRE packet passthrough? I have been unable to remote into my home office reliably - I frequently receive a "Verifying Username and Password..." message but do not connect . Once I do get in, I look at the System log on the RRAS box - it detected the connection attempts but warned that the problem was likely due to I'net blockage of GRE packets. I suspect I am successful, once the routers redefine the best path to my Public IP, but this is a somewhat random process via RIP or OSPF (i.e., the luck of the draw). I know people who…

Cant access admin features on our Terminal server.
by Guest Glamprecht- 2 replies

When I am logged into my Win2003 Terminal server I cannot access some admin features. Such as "services" or "Computer management". The typical routes to get to these tools are not available. Such as when I right click My Computer, there is not an option for "Computer Management" and when I go to Control Panel and open up administrative tools I only see three tools that I can access; Cluster Admin and two that deal with Net Framework. I am a Domain Admin and I administer this server but weather I am logged in locally or remotely to this server there are areas of the server system that I cannot easily access. For now i have been creating custom MMC co…
