Prevent XP Professional from locking laptop every 15 minutes
by Guest Dave_in_gva- 8 replies

Hi, I have a work-provided laptop that has been setup by our IT department. I have admin privileges so can edit the registry, install programs etc. One thing that drives me nuts with their install is that they have set up the laptop to automatically lock after 15 minutes of no input. While this is fine for my desktop at work, I find it a real pain when I am on the road where often in meetings etc. How do I change this? I'd like to set up my laptop so it never locks me out. I don't mind logging on with my username and password etc. but each time I log on I am always with my laptop so there's no need to have it lock me out every 15 minutes. Best, …

Recycle bin global setting bug?
by Guest Thierry- 1 reply

I have Windows XP x64 installed on two physical machine. I want to globally configure the recycle bin to "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted", and "Do not display delete confirmation dialog". But Windows just act as if the opposite was configured. Files go in the Recycle Bin, and the delete confirmation comes up each time I empty it. I have tried several workarounds that don't work. (I hate using the recycle bin!) I am thinking that maybe there is a registry key for this? Anyway, I think this is a bug...

i would like to uninstall the microsoft programs i do not use. i have a very small hard disk & there is a lot of unnecessary software loaded on it that i have no use for. i'd like to remove: msn explorer windows messenger internet explorer games & other things, but these are the main things. i have other software i like much better than these programs. i will never use them again, & they're taking up a whole bunch of space on my hard drive. your help would be appreciated! p.s.: why aren't the newsgroups alphabetized? i've been sitting here for five minutes, staring at 5pt type in the pulldown menu, trying to find a windows xp newsg…

Run an application via file type association but inherited short name
by Guest flahmeshess- 1 reply

In window explorer, when I click on a file, it will run the application associated with the file type. In the file type, I set it as application.exe "%1" Normally, it would inherit the full path (including spaces). However, for one application, it inherited the short name instead. I wonder why ? It it due to the application or my settings in file type ? Thanks for your help in advance.

"Welcome" Screen at Startup
by Guest Simon- 10 replies

I have just re-installed XP including SP2 and IE 7. When I start the PC it goes through the Windows XP screen and then the blue "Welcome" screen comes up. There is nothing else on it - no name or icon - just the single word "Welcome". After about 5 seconds it clears automatically ( no click required) and I am taken to Desktop. As the sole user of this machine I am happy not to have a password. My question is why does the Welcome screen display - in my circumstances it seems to have no purpose. Is there a fix so that it can be disabled and to enable me to be taken straight from the Windows XP splash to Desktop. Thanks.

Hi, I am going to ask for help without being able to give you too much information. I have a friend who has an old computer with Win 98 and he can't open IE. He tells me that when he tries to open it, it gives him and error message that says it needs to shut down because of some conflict problem and then it quits. Any suggestions on where he/I can start to get IE working again. If not, I can get more detailed info tomorrow. Thanks, Tom

My Recent Docs issue
by Guest Danny Smith- 1 reply

Hi folks, Each week I empty the list of My Recent Documents (just to keep things clear and organised) but then I find that thereafter whenever I open a document (such as a Word document, image file etc.) it doesn't appear on the My Recent Documents list - as if I didn't even open it - it just says it's empty. I've found a workaround, and that is to go to C:\Documents and Settings\JohnDoe\Recent, go to Properties, Security tab, and manually add my username to the permissions with Full Control, but the next week when I empty the list I have to do it again. Does anyone know of any way to 'fix it' so that I don't have to keep following that process every time I …

tcpsvcs.exe taking all my memory!
by Guest Sandy Wood- 2 replies

I've noticed lately that my Windows 2003 R2 DHCP server is showing evidence of tcpsvcs.exe sucking up too much memory. This morning I started getting MOM alerts that there was excess memory consumption from tcpsvcs so I killed the process (it was using 650 meg of ram) and it started again at about 10 meg. It's currently at about 25 meg. MOM is detecting that it's using too much ram and sending me alerts. Does anyone have any idea on this one? I've seen other posts in this forum with similar issues but no resolutions. -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney

Sharepoint

About 4 days ago I noticed an error message in my Application Event log from Sharepoint Services that there was not enough free space available and the tracing service has temporarily stopped outputting trace messages to the log file. I found the log files at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Logs. At this location there are lots of logs 30 - 40 meg. each. They all contain the same message, '07/10/2007 08:18:14.98 OWSTIMER.EXE (0x0AD4) 0x0AFC Windows SharePoint Services Timer 5uuf Monitorable The previous instance of the timer job 'Config Refresh', id '{CBECAB1F-4C74…
