Using VSS on 64-bit W2K8 from a 32-bit application

Hi, We have a 32bit application using the Volume Shadow Copy API on 64-bit W2K8 (Longhorn beta3 is installed). Our 32-bit application is using the Windows 2003 VSS API library. There is no problem doing this with 32-bit W2K8, the problem is only with 64-bit. When InitializeForBackup() is called it is returning 0x8000ffff (E_UNEXPECTED). The event log contains: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The VSS Coordinator class is not registered. This may be caused due to a setup failure or as a result of an application's installer or uninstaller. and "Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040154. Cannot install R2

Hi, I upgrade many servers "2003 SP2 standard" to "2003 SP2 R2 standard" - without any problem. A handfull of machines failes with an error "An Application is running - Reboot before install" (free translated from German). The reboot did not repair this problem. I stop many services and tasks but the problem is the same. Strangely is the fact all machines use same configuration (hardware, software like SMS and RIS/WDS). Which application cancel the installation of R2? Is there a list of applications wich setup2.exe checks before continue? Thx, TH PS: The server configuration page is closed (hta)

Log-on password
by Guest Trish- 1 reply

Hi I am using Windows XP Pro. When I purchased my laptop last year, someone transferred all my settings and files from my old laptop. I find that I have to log on as user, not Administrator. That has not been a problem. However, I now wish to change the user password and would prefer that I be the Administrator rather than the user - after all, I am the only person using my laptop and all the files are mine. Is this possible, and, if so, how do I go about it? I am terrified of locking myself out of all my files! Also, I would like to set up a guest account which my overseas friends can use when they visit. Any assistance would be most appr…

CPU Resource Question

Hi -- Be gentle, please. I'm not a techie and I'm pathetically old besides. My desktop computer is a 3.0ghz P4 with 1GB ram and plenty of GBs of unused space. The OS is WinXP Pro with SP2. I've used a powered 4-port USB hub for years. Recently I bought a second one and connected the second hub to the first. I did not connect the power supply to the second hub because, when I asked the vendor's tech support representative if both power supplies needed to be plugged in, he told me no, that Windows would notify me if more power was needed. I connected a new webcam to the second USB hub. Everything seemed to work fine until I installed encoder softwar…

I am still in the need for some assistance. I'd like to thank those who replied to my previous entry. Here is what I'm trying to do, what I've done so far, and some things that people have suggested. I am an Americorp Volunteer working on a technology infrastructure update for an Independent Living Center. This is my first experience using Server 2003 and Terminal Server. I have implemented the Terminal Server and all appears to be working as planned with the exception of the following. We have 4 Satellite offices; each one has their own Network Printer. (Same Brand, Brother 2070n) These printers are assigned a static IP address and are plugged directly …

Restore an image
by Guest Mav- 3 replies

Hi, I have been thinking about drive imaging software to use for backup, but I am concerned about the ability to restore an image after a hardware failure. If I create an image with say Norton Ghost, then have a motherboard failure, and have to replace it, if I then try to restore the image, am I right in thinking Windows will need to be reactivated? Then if I am using an OEM version, the licence would not cover me for a new motherboard? If so, I then have an image that I cannot use unless I can get hold of a motherboard of the exact same make & model. I hope that is not too confusing - I think I may be a little confused here myself, which doesn…
