Recover data from hard disk
by Guest dirtydavid- 3 replies

My laptop retired last week, so I have retrieved the hard drive and now want to recover the data from it. I have put the drive into a case and plugged it in via the usb ports on my new machine. There were 2 user accounts on the drive, one account I can get into and have recovered everything. The second user account will not allow me any access. Everything I try I get the error message - f:\documents and settings\andies\my documents is not accessible Access is denied. I have tried creating a user account with the same name on the new machine - still denied Booted from the hard drive, still access denied. Can anyone tell me how to get past this…

Server 2003 SP1 reboot randomly
by Guest Hubert Rétif- 6 replies

Hi, Since a few days, the server reboot itself without apparent reason. In the event log I have find these 2 error codes (first more often): Fehlercode war: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf785f7e9, 0xb8771c48, 0xb8771944). Fehlercode war: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf785fe23, 0xb851bc80, 0xb851b97c) An old Foxpro (16 bit) program is running on it (XP client call it). This is know as bad memory management and I am wondering whether it is not related, although it was quite good working during about 2 years. Does anyone know the meaning of the above codes? Regards, Hubert Retif

Activating an extra monitor in XP
by Guest MikeRooke- 3 replies

I'm running XP Home on a Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop. I'm trying to allow myself to install a secondary monitor. All the documentation says that by going into Display Properties there should be a Secondary Monitor Icon where I can "extend my Win Desktop onto the monitor". My dialogue box gives me seperate Appearance and Themes Tabs, and no Secondary Monitor icon. This means I can't activate my new monitor or load the drivers. Have I missed something obvious or has XP moved on and left me behind? I would really appreciate some help with this. -- Try to learn something new everyday

windows will not boot, and now will not install
by Guest raygunpk- 2 replies

Ok bear with me as I try to explain this. -There was a power outage in my area and my computer restarted. After restarting it would hang at the Windows loading screen with the blue bar, and it would stay like that forever. -I went into safe mode which works fine and tried a system restore to an earlier date, and still wouldn't load. -Went back into safe mode and it said Restoration Complete. Ran msconfig to do a diagnostic boot...still no luck. -Ran chkdsk /r using Recovery Console, said it fixed the errors but still hangs at the same screen. Ran Samsung HD utility and detected ECC errors. -Tried to do a Repair Windows installation using an origin…

....also seperateley posted in hardware i.e. cross posted to wrong NG A few weeks ago I switched on "Intel Speedstep" in my "old" main PC's bios, and selected XP's "Mininal Power Management" scheme, and tweaked other settings for ages to find out what the best settings were, to get the most of this "power saving" feature, closely watching various motherboard frequencies with CPU-Z, and Hot CPU Tester Pro etc. to keep an eye on what was going on with motherboard frequencies. Manually Removing Certain Registry Key Types
by Guest Scott- 5 replies

What are the possible consequences of manually removing the following type of registry key: hkey_local_machine \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internet settings\zonemap\domains\ (website) If my understanding is correct, the values of this key will set the security/privacy settings of the IE browser for the specified website. For the case of malware, the malware would create this key and set the security level to "Trusted" for the website. It would then direct the browser to the website and run more malicious code from that site. Using REGEDIT, I looked to see how many keys I had of this type and found a huge amount. I estimate about 500. N…

Simple IIS 7 redirection for TS Web
by Guest BrianB- 1 reply

What obviously seemed like a simple task has turned into an issue. TS Web is installed and is functioning just fine. Since the default installation is a sub folder in the default web site, I am trying to do a redirect so users don't have to add the "/ts" when they type a url. I'd be much appreciated if anyone has any ideas why I can't this to work. thanks, Brian
