Windows 2008 in Existing Domain - Rqmts??
by Guest Diane- 9 replies

We are looking at putting in Exchange 2007 on a Windows Standard 2008 box. The existing environment is a Win2k domain with some Win2003 servers. We know the environment needs to be upgraded, however, I have had no luck finding the requirements for putting a 2008 box in an existing domain. Most information I found discusses deployment in a new 2008 domain. I have found the requirements for exchange in an existing domain. Can anyone point me to resources with information on 2008? I called MS pre-sales after much searching myself and all they could offer is they thought the domain had to be 2008. Can someone confirm if this is the case or, if it…

Copy the Recovery partition
by Guest Charles W- 5 replies

I have a Dell Dimension. The WinXP "Recovery Disk" for this computer is on the same disk as the working WinXP but at a different partition. If the Hard Disk crashes, I have no way to reinstall the WinXP back to a new Hard Disk. My question is Is there a way to copy the "Recovery Disk" from its partition to an external CD and make this CD bootable so that should anything happen to the existing Hard Disk, I can reinstall the WinXP from the CD back to a new Hard Disk? If possible, I would like to use whatever tools there are in the WinXP. I don't want to have to buy some fancy third party programs. Thanks in advance Charles.

Open File - Security Warning
by Guest Rich Pasco- 3 replies

I'm running Windows XP. Within the last week, every time I double-click on a JPG image file in Windows Explorer (or type its name on the command line), I get: Open File - Security Warning Do you want to open this file? ... [Open] [Cancel] [x] Always ask before opening this file While files from the Internet can be useful, this file type can potentially harm your computer.... I can un-check the "Always ask" box, and then it doesn't prompt me any more for that particular image, but it still prompts for other JPG images. Can anyone explain why I am suddenly getting this prompt? Could it be that recently I installed Firefox 3.0? How can I…

FTP Problem
by Guest Olen R. Pearson- 2 replies

Hi, I am having a very odd problem with FTP. Basically, it won't work. The FTP client seems to connect but then issues an error and no files appear on the remote server. The last time I needed to use FTP was in February of this year, and it worked fine. Now, when I try it, it goes nowhere. I have tried several different FTP clients and accounts, all with the same outcome. It is not a firewall problem; I run only Win XP Pro firewall and have tried it with that disabled + anything else that even MIGHT effect connections. I have tried it in Safe Mode with no success which makes me think it is not a conflict with another app - though I don't believe I have …

I have a 2003 domain with about 20 computers (Xp and Server 2003). When I go into Windows Explore and drill down to the domain, only 4 computers are shown. Yet, when I search for any computer not shown by browsing, I find all the "missing" computers. Why is this ? What does explore use to find computers ? FYI--I can ping all computers by NB name. Thanks

Dell XPS Home - 300 G hard drive, 4 G RAM XP/SP3 Kaspersky Internet Suite 7.0- SpybotSearch & Destroy-Spyblaster- Windows Defender- All Windows Updates current: For about a month, when I shut down my pc, shut down seems to 'hang'. I get the normal shut down screen,"savings settings' windows is shutting down'etc." Then a second or two later, get a black screen, and then back to shutting down, etc. again. This time my pc does shut down. I cannot pinpoint anything I could have done to cause this. Only changes made during this timeframe is uninstalling previous version of S &D & installing latest version (V1.6.0.31) and installing any windows…

>>Trying 2 bypass Win2k logon password<<

Is there a way to boot into safemode and change a password or create another account or anything similar to that?? I have a laptop that I have been given but I don't have the password to get into the account. I don't want to wipe it clean and reload another OS on here if I don't have 2 go thru all of that. I thought I was shown this a good while ago but when i try it i'm still getting a logon screen. Maybe it was another OS that this was done on, I can't remember. It's a Gateway SOLO 3500... and it's running Pro Ed. If it's NOT possible, would anyone know of any other way of getting past my lil problem here. THANX N ADVANCE. Wayne B.

Icons Became generic
by Guest PT- 3 replies

Somehow, I did something which has caused a few desktop shortcut icons to change from specific icons to a generic blank picture. The icons include two DVD drives E: and F:, a utility program Acronis, and a self created icon for a frequently used folder. I was able to restore the self-created icon without difficulty. But... I next tried fixing the DVD drive icons. But if I right click the Icon + Properties + Change Icon and select the appropriate icon, I get a message that (for example) "the name E: specified in the drive box is not valid." So what's the trick? -- PT

Third Harddrive Causing System Halting
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 8 replies

On Sunday I plugged in a 3rd harddrive. I unplugged my CD drive and put this 3rd drive on the second IDE channel. The first one has my normal two drives. The drives are #1 = 40gig with 2 partitions. #2 = 30gig with 4 smaller partitions. When I plugged in this 3rd drive, a 40gig drive, I partitioned it as the entire drive, no partitions. I only plugged this drive in temporarily to backup my entire system, but left it plugged in for the last couple days to rearrange some files. The problem is that ever since I hooked up that 3rd harddrive, my computer was constantly falling asleep. If I copied or deleted a bunch of files, the computer would hang for as m…

by Guest romac- 4 replies

I'm getting a "Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" error message. With the Windows Setup disk I tried running the repair console but when prompted to select which Windows installation to log onto I select the correct drive and I get the BSOD that says ...."Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer REGISTRY _ERROR". I'm stuck! I can't even get into SAFE MODE. Please Help! Thanks in advance.
