windows update problem and now won't boot up
by Guest moletteuk- 4 replies

I've got a problem since updating windows. Computer won't boot up properly at all now. Automatic updates was installing sp3. Mid-way through, computer restarted!?. On restarting, a message came up saying that installation had been interrupted and that it was attempting to restore to an earlier setting. After this appeared to be complete, the pc restarted, asked for a password (doesn't normally), then loaded my desktop wallpaper & then stopped responding. Only the wallpaper loads up, and the mouse pointer moves, but there are no icons or anything and it does not respond to control alt delete. Any ideas please?

Unable to disable System Restore
by Guest Gregg- 5 replies

I'm running XP SP3 and am logged in with an administrator account. When I go to the System Restore tab in System Properties the check box and text for "Turnoff System Restore" are grayed out and (disabled by Group Policy) appears after it. I have checked the user and security policy rights but can't find anything that seems to relate to this problem. TIA, Gregg

Setting default behavior for Music CD - iTunes overriding Windows?
by Guest toronado455- 2 replies

Windows XP SP2 Home I have set the Autoplay preferences for Music CD to "open folder to show files" and checked the box for "always do selected action". It does this correctly the first time. But then the next time it forgets this setting somehow and launches iTunes instead, (which I don't want). I've tried resetting this like a million times and it just keeps forgetting. How do I get this to stick? Is iTunes somehow overriding Windows on this? I've looked for a setting within iTunes to tweek but cannot find one.

Have USB Combo Adapter (IDE/SATA) so connected to own PC and running Acronis Disc Director and can see 3 partitions Partion 1 is Recovery Partition, 2 OS and Programs and 3 Documents etc. Now Partion 1 has no drive letter and I cannot allocate so not visible in My Computer/Windows Explorer. Microsoft Photo Editor disappears
by Guest sengsational- 2 replies

This happened to me on several machines. This time I did something about it. I searched the registry and found that you just need to delete the "InitialPosition" key. Buggy crap. This has been in there since at least Windows 98. Symptom: Windows Photo Editor only shows in full screen. If you try to make it windowed, it will "disappear", but still have a task bar icon, which you can maximize back to full screen. Solution: regedit HKEY_USERS > (latest) > Software > Microsoft > Photo Editor > 3.0 > Microsoft Photo Editor Delete InitialPosition key. --Dale--

Failed Installations
by Guest Ditto007- 2 replies

I asked a question yesterday about the necessity of Service Pack3. Thanks for all the info. From the info, I guess I don't really need it. Does anyone know how to delete it from updates if I don't want it. It also shows 0 downloaded and failed to install. Now I need to know about other updates the fail to install and show 0 downloaded info. I called Dell and they said I do not need the updates for my computer and that is why they did not install. The icon showed up in my in my system tray wanting to install 2 updates. One was for Update Windows XP (KB952287) and the other was a Security Update (KB046648). My history shows they have tried to instal…

Access Control on listening ports
by Guest requeth@gmail.com- 0 replies

I have a few servers that have ports open and listening for data, but I've found some security vulnerabilities with leaving them open. The ports are needed to talk between several known servers. Does anyone know a way to make it so only the servers that need to talk to each other can access the open port, any other server/machine that tries to hit the port gets server refused or something of that nature? I could have it done with a lot of firewall rules on my routers, but I really want this taken care of on the servers rather then through the routers. Ideas oh smart admins?

Monitor Will Not Turn Off in through Power Schemes
by Guest Luca- 0 replies

On both of my Dell desktops, I am having the same problem in Display Properties/Power Schemes. I set it to turn off monitor after 10 minutes, and "apply". Many times, the next day, when I leave either computer, the monitor fails to turn off after 10 minutes. If I redo the setting, it goes off that day, but the problem starts again after rebooting. Each system has a different brand monitor (Dell, NEC). The NEC is more problematic. I have searched web for solutions to no avail. Any suggestions as to solving this? XP is always updated, and even if I turn off all tasks running in backround, problem persists.

Win is wearing out my hard drive
by Guest johnsuth@nospam.com.au- 3 replies

XP Pro x64 is interrogating my SCSI hard drive every second, and periodicaly reading the whole drive, while my foreground application is waiting for me to give it another instruction. I have not authorised any background applications and I have turned off some Windows services which I felt were simply not neccessary for my use of this computer, including internet access. The computer is definitely not accessing the internet. What might I consider to stop this noisy and pointless disk access?

Windows Media Player 11 stopped playing DVDs
by Guest Phisherman- 4 replies

I just did a clean Windows XP Home install last week. To get the proper codecs I installed interVideo Home Theater, then WMP 11 played movies just fine. Since then I have installed Nero 8, DVD Fab 5 and Real Player 10 plus. Now WMP 11 won't play an original movie, but it will play a move that has been copied. Home Theater (from interVideo) will play either DVD, so that tells me that there is something wrong with WMP 11. I took Microsoft's suggestion and upgraded the video driver, still no play. I like WMP 11, but would like it more if it played (original) DVDs again. Since I know it played with the codecs installed with interVideo, I don't need to chance…

No http access from XP Home, all other internet is fine(?)

All of a sudden I can no longer browse the web with either IE or Firefox on my laptop. I haven't changed any firewall settings on my router, and even at school I cannot use either browser-- this used to not be the case. I can use ftp, smtp and any other internet access protocols on this machine; just not http. Maybe I contracted some malware, and I'm checking that, but is there any XP utility that will let me see if something's blocking http on the machine?
