Server still functions, but cannot log in locally or remotely
by Guest Chris Benton- 2 replies

Running Windows Server 2003 SP1 on an HP DL380. A couple of weeks ago, we developed a problem where we are unable to log in to the server either locally or remotely. It will work okay for a few days, then we get a gray screen with no login prompt, and we simply get disconnected after a few minutes; however, clients are able to log in, authenticate, and use server resources as if nothing's wrong. Only a hard shutdown/restart clears up the problem. The event logs show nothing amiss. Eventually, a login prompt will show up at the console, but the login process takes over an hour and when I'm finally logged in, I notice that no services are running at all. If …

File Open Screen Options
by Guest Jan- 2 replies

When I open Word, I am able to configure the Open File screen to add various folders on the left-hand side. Is there a way to do that in other programs? For instance, if I am in Quicken and I click on Open File, while I do get the larger part of the screen displaying all of my Quicken files, the side bar (on the left) only has My Recent Documents, Desktop, My Documents, My Computer, and My Network Places. The same is true for some of the othe programs I use. I would like to be able to configure the side bar to include other folders that are used more frequently than 5 that are listed.

Missing Minimized programs on task bar
by Guest CB- 4 replies

I upgraded from Office 2000 to Office 2007. After it installed the Desktop Search function I find that minimized programs do not show up on task bar as they used to. So now, when I want to go back to another loaded in use program I have to Ctl-Alt-Del to get to task manager and switch to the program. How do I restore the ability to see the running programs on the bottom of my task bar ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. CB

boot disk failure
by Guest meamjw- 1 reply

-- meamjw I am using XP Home/SP3 and it had been running well until about a week ago when I was trying to set up a LAN and hooked up an Iogear KVM. The next time I tried to boot it got to the end of the PCI devices section and presented me with the "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" I have since found I can get it to boot with an emergency floppy and everything works fine after that. In fact I have just been leaving the floppy inserted and have no problems. I just want to fix it so it boots like it's supposed to and have tried many things that have not helped one bit: 1. ran the most complete check disk=no errors. Ran a disk diagnos…

Hourglass Flashes every few seconds...
by Guest anthony77- 6 replies

The Hourglass icon flashes about every other second on my computer. I've restarted many times, I have very little running when I start my computer. I've deleted a few useless things off of my computer lately to increase the hard disk space, so that might have something to do with it. It must be trying to run somthing in the background. How do I stop it, it's driving me crazy!??

XP Error Msg
by Guest KenP- 1 reply

My Dell laptop was acting sluggish so I ran a disk check to fix errors, if any, and defragged the system. On restart, I now get the following: 0x000000F4 0x00000003 0x8A53F680 0x8A53F7F4 0x805FB02E I tried to run the XP repair option from the CD but the repair option did not come up as an option. That is after entering ENTER on the first setup screen. It only came to the 2nd SETUP screen w/no REPAIR option. Does anyone have a clue as to what I can do to fix this problem? Thanksin advance. Desktop
by Guest SinSoul- 12 replies

Hello, I have this weird question, but I find it rather actual. I was wondering, if it's possible to change desktop folder, I mean so that all information with which I work on desktop would be stored not in C:\Documents and set....\Desktop, but so that I could change the location of it. I need it because it annoys me, each time to backup desktop, when I'm about to format C disk to reinstall windows. Thank you in advance.

I have downloaded Skype (several times). When I receive calls, speakers work fine but caller cannot hear me. I've run trouble shooter via Skype and verified all settings required. I've done sound check via Windows and verified all settings. I've replaced my microphone to insure working hardware. I'm using Realtec AC'97 audio driver. Please, I'd appreciate any helpful thoughts to correct mic sound issue?

Keyboard Problems
by Guest BigE- 1 reply

I installed Windows XP Japanese SP3 on my girlfriend's computer. During the installation, I chose the English 101/102 keyboard option (press the space bar), because she has an English 101 keyboard attached to it. Windows had no problem with the keyboard, and she was able to type all her text in Japanese using the English keyboard. Somehow that changed tonight. When she was using Japanese IME to type, Windows somehow switches her keyboard layout to Japanese. Because some of the keys are different on Japanese keyboards, she is unable to find them. She has to press every SHIFT+ combination to find some of the characters. For example, on Japanese keybo…

When I reboot the computer it comes up with "keyboard failure" which it thinks about for a while, then finally boots up. But, once it is up, there is no problem with the keyboard at all. However, it makes booting up take about 20 minutes. Keyboard is Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. OS is XP Office standard.

Windows Explorer Slow to List Files When Browsing Folder
by Guest Paul Jenkins- 3 replies

I recently upgraded a server from Windows 2000 Server Standard SP4 to Windows 2003 Server Standard SP2. Actually, it wasn't really an upgrade per-se because I built the new machine from scratch and restored the files to the new server. *SOME* users are reporting Windows Explorer is very slow to open one particular shared folder containing approx. 70,000 files. I still have the 2000 server ... when I open that folder across the network from my XP SP3 workstation it takes approx. 20 seconds to open, yet the same folder open the W2K3 server can take up to 6 minutes to open! The users who complain about the W2K3 server being slow use a variety of hard-cod…
