Hard Drive Information Needed
by Guest Frog- 6 replies

I have an external USB 2.0 High Speed hard drive case. The hardware currently installed in this case is a 10GB Western Digital hard drive. I would like to replace that hard drive with a 500GB Western Digital drive... --one that would be used for backing up my internal hard drive, and --one that could be removed from the USB connected case (without loosing the backup data copied on that hard drive) and installing it internally on my computer (if that ever became necessary). I know the 10GB hard drive currently in the USB box was taken from an old computer, and it seems to work without any problems. Are there things I need to know before purchasing …

Regaining EN logo on the task bar
by Guest DaffyD®- 3 replies

At startup when when the taskbar icons were loaded at restart, one of them was the EN for the Text Services language bar. I closed the language bar on the task bar and now I can't it back. I know I probably don't need it but I'd like to do the reverse of what I did. so that EN logo would load the same way the SoundMAX, Volume control speaker icon, ATI icon, D4, Zone Alarn, The Area connection speed 3, and the Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect enabled all do all at start up.What would be the registry hack for this?

Lost Connection to Workgroup
by Guest TPG- 0 replies

I have a local network running among four computers. On one of these, I have lost my ability to connect with other computers in its workgroup. This had been working for ages and I'm not sure what could have caused it. I can connect to the router and have access to the internet. My "network places" shows the workgroup, but when I click on it to connect I get an error message that the workgroup is not accessible and I might not have permission to use this resource. I've checked that the workgroup name is correct and even went through the process of re-entering the name - to no avail. I appreciate any advice.

Can I Logon Automatically in Windows XP
by Guest patetc- 5 replies
I had to reinstall Windows XP and SP3. Now when I start Windows, I have to click on my user name to logon. Previously Windows started automatically. I can't find an option to change this as administrator. Since I'm the only user on my computer, I don't want this extra step before Windows starts. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks. Pat

Lost MS Money

MS Money has never been part of the XP operating system. If you had it before, it either came preinstalled by the computer mftr. (Dell, HP, etc.) or someone (you?) bought and installed it. Look through the CDs that came with your computer. If you can't find the installation CD for Money, you can purchase the latest version from your favorite online or brick&mortar store. Video plays 15% fast...?
by Guest Kenneth- 5 replies

Howdy, I have a Win 2000 system that I personally use infrequently. Other family members use it nearly every day. Minutes ago, I went to Youtube to play a video. It played "fast" that is, both the audio and video were playing at about 115% of their proper speed. My wife said "Oh yes, this system does that all the time..." Every video source played the same way. What might cause this sort of problem? Many thanks, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

Computer won't stay off until unplugged
by Guest RetiredBob- 3 replies

When I "Shut down" my Toshiba Satellite laptop running XP/SP3, it will power off and then immediately power back on. To get it to stay off, I have to interrupt the AC power by unplugging it. When I plug it back in, it will stay off. This started about about two months ago, but I can't think of anything I might have done at that time to start the problem. Thanks for any assistance.

Dell Dim 8300 Freezes in Standby Mode
by Guest Charliec- 4 replies

I have a bit of a problem. I have my Dell Dim 8300 set to go into Standby Mode when idle for 30 minutes. Most of the time, it wakes up fine when I click the mouse or hit a key on the keyboard. Lately, sometimes it will not wake up and I have to do a hard boot to get it back up. I'm running WinXP SP3 with all the latest updates. Anyone has experienced this have a possible solution to it. Would appreciate any advice to heal this. If you need more information, please let me know. I'm also going to post a message in the Dell Computer Newsgroup, but wanted to try here as well. Thanks Charliec ****************************************************** Char…

Very slow startup
by Guest Ray K- 2 replies

Yesterday I installed W2K over ME in a friend's computer. Works okay, except boot time is well over two minutes, measured from the splash screen to the appearance of all the desktop icons. At several points, the screen is just a pure blue/green. Once, it remains that way as long as 25 seconds, with just the mouse pointer visible and a very brief one-time flashing of the hourglass, before the next dialog box appears. By contrast, my computer with the same W2K boots in about a minute. I noticed several differences between the computers. 1. In my computer, there is a WINNT directory; in her computer, it's called WINDOWS. Regardless of the name, the cont…

by Guest Big_Mack1- 6 replies

I'm posting this in the XP forum because most of the people who will be getting my CD are still using XP, and I want the Data CD to be able to open and play on most of their machines. Setup for my question: I created a Data CD which contains: (1)400 wedding photos, (2)a Powerpoint 2007 slideshow of the wedding, reception, and honeymoon, (3)and 3 mp3 files that were played during the ceremony, which are also used in my Powerpoint slideshow. My question: How do I get my Powerpoint 2007 creator to use the ->user's<- CD-rom as the "default" disk when searching for a music file which is embedded in the slideshow? The problem I'm having is that the…

I am trying to resolve issues with Word and Excel files loading slowly, and in File type associations Advanced properties for .DOC and .XLS I unchecked the 'Use DDE' checkbox. However, this checkbox always seems to be checked automatically after saving and exiting the dialog. Any ideas how to keep it unchecked?
