Hello All, i recently deleted the partitions on my 2 installed hard drives and reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP home, It only installed on one of the 2 drives. the other did not show up on "MY COMPUTER". So I did a reinstall and only picked that drive to add a partition and install. Windows then reformatted the first install then installed XP home on both drives. Now when my computer starts it shows 2 Windows XP home loads and asks which one I want to start. I have reinstalled before and never had this problem. Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling? I believe it is using up memory this way or am I wrong? Please HELLLLLLLLLLLLP. -- t…

Is W2008 ready for production? really ready?

OK I'm not experienced in admin - my background is software development - but I run a small business and do my own admin. I say this because a few times some quirky things happened a week ago (can't remember the details) but yesterday I had to install NTBACKUP utility twice (this is the special one from MS to allow restoration of NTBACKUPed files from W2003) as after the first time I installed it it would not run due to a missing DLL. Similarly over the last 3 days I have been trying to register MSSOAP30.DLL without success. I have tried everything - I posted a thread on this forum - a thread on Experts-Exchange - everything. I am going on holidays …

New Volume?
by Guest ManyBeers- 3 replies

My laptop running WindowsXP SP 3 had one harddrive divided into 2 partitions... C:(system) and D:\drives. Ok ,so i recently decided to wipe my D: and split it up into two parts. First part would be a new smaller D:\ drive and the second half would be left as Free space to eventually put a Linux distro on. Anyways now in Windows Explorer it shows D:\New Volume and not D:\local disk. How come? ps If you are wondering why the drive letter shows first it is a registry change i made several years ago. I prefer the drive letter first.

Windows update fails on old reinstall
by Guest OSProf- 4 replies

As a result of perpetual blue screens, I needed to re-install Windows XP on my 3-year-old Dell from the manufacturer's installation CD. Previously, I had kept everything up to date with Windows updates. However, the re-installation caused Windows and Internet Explorer to revert to their old versions (IE 6 and SP2, without any of the security updates of the last three years). After installation, I tried to update to SP3; it downloaded the update successfully, but the installation failed. Therefore, I tried "Custom updates." It downloaded 96 updates successfully, including the IE7 installer, but none of them successfully installed. I uninstalled a bunc…

Hello, Is there any way to copy or decrypt encrypted files if I've got the encryption key and can access the HD contents but I'm not the designated decryption agent and can't log on to the account that owns the encrypted files? I can't log on to windows in normal or safe mode because of a corrupt boot volume. running chkdsk, fixboot and fixmbr in the recovery console did not fix the problem, so no way to log in to my account. I can access my hard disk contents by running ubuntu live cd. I have even set up a network between the faulty machine running ubuntu, as server, and another machine running XP. But I can't access or copy the encrypted files e…

Sound issues

I have Realtek AC 97 sound card. There have been no changes to my computer except what update does BUT my sound mas disappeared. When I check it in the Realtek Audio Control Panel, I have sound. In XP control panel it says my sound card and my drivers are working fine, but no audio device. I run DXDiag and it says no sound card. But when test direct music through the Realtek Audio button I have music. I checked my hardware and the sound card is there. I searched the Microsoft Knowledge base and it offered a patch for an issue with a security update and Realtek which I ran to no avail. I am lost--does anyone have any ideas?

My Win XP SP3 insists on booting in the 'Quick Boot' mode, regardless of how I adjust the boot command in the BIOS 'SetUp' menu. Is this normal with XP and/or XP SP3 or is there some way to get back to the old 'slow boot' mode with XP SP3? Thanks, in advance, for any assistance.
