USB External HDD Error
by Guest Skippybox- 8 replies

My USB External HDD has been working fine up until this point. When I try to access the drive in My Computer I get the message: [Windows Explorer] F:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. When I look at the drives 'General Properties' it says that the File System is RAW and that Used space, Free space, and Capacity are all 0 bytes. In Disk Management, it says I have a Volume: (F:), Layout: Partition, Type: Basic, File System: 'blank', Status: Healthy, Capacity: 465.76GB, Free Space: 465.76GB, % Free: 100%. I had been using the 'Optimize for performance' write caching setting. Could this be the cause for the corru…

I'm building a new DC for our network that will replace an older machine. This machine will host FSMO,GC and DNS for the network. It's a Dell server in a RAID-1 array with a PERC 6/i SCSI controller. I've already run dcpromo on the machine and noticed the event logs warning about the write caching. This dis kcontroller does have battery backup on it so I believe I'm ok to leave this enabled? What does eveyone think in general about this? I want the the event logs clean as a whistle before I continue moving roles or at least know that I have a server in optimal condition. Should I disable write caching or not? Thanks

Unable to set up ODBC setting

I have a Win 2008 server that will host a front application that has an Oracle database backend. Prior to Win 2008, I would install the Oracle client and all would be good. I installed the Oracle client on the 2008 Server and got no errors. However when I go to "Create new data source", Oracle is not an option as it would be on 2003. Any suggestions on what I am missing. We are trying to move forward with 2008 deployments and would prefer not have to revert back to 2003. Thanks -- ccoates

Multiple copies of Wininet.dll
by Guest Ed Wood- 1 reply

I am running Windows XP Pro with sp3. I have multiple copies of Wininet.dll on my computer, in various sub-directories. From the System32 directory, the IE7 directory, to individual program sub-directories. Many of them are different sizes, from 460kb to 1800kb, with different creation dates. First, can I delete all of them and replace them with the latest version as indicated by the most recent date of the .dll file? Second, I have a program (RemoveII Pro by Incodesolutions) that will not download the latest updates to the data file. In contacting their technical support, their response was that the Wininet drivers were busy or corrupted. They sai…

Hello, I've gotten an error code doing a backup of Windows Server 2008. I've spent about 30 minutes trying every imaginable search of Microsoft's site, but can't find an explanation. Any one know where I should look? The full message is: "Backup started at {long string of numbers} failed as Volume Shadow Copy. Operation failed for backup volume with the following error code: 2155348001". I do backups daily, but only get this message occassionally. Thanks

Why do unwanted characters appear in emails, web pages, and forums?
by Guest Stan Hilliard- 5 replies

Why are these unwanted characters displayed? Here is an example: I sent an email to myself with a "-" (minus sign) in the title. When I read the email subject lines on my provider's server using Firefox. the - is displayed as these three characters: –. This is just one example. Other characters can be transformed. The occurrence of this problem is intermittent for me and thus I cannot necessarily repeat it at any one time. I think this issue widespread. I did a Google search on – and got 141,000,000 hits. What causes this and how can it be prevented? Stan Hilliard

Permission Basics
by Guest Russella- 1 reply

I'll admit I'm a bit of a newbie, but I'm hoping someone can help with this. I'm trying to protect parent folders from accidental deletion, which I've done, however I can't seem to stop the content of these folders being deleted, despite receiving an access denied error. Here's the basic layout: PARENT FOLDER -> SUBFOLDER->FILES If I grant DELETE permissions (on subfolders & files only) on the PARENT, and then try to delete it, I receive the appropriate error, but all content is lost. Is there a way to ensure that if access is denied for the top most folder, that it won't propogate to subfolders and files? I know one solution would be…

Display Won't Go To Sleep
by Guest pestocat- 3 replies

I have a laptop Dell 600M with WinXP and with all updates. I have set the Power save to turn off display after 15 minutes and goto a screen saver after 2 minutes. The problem is the display won't go to sleep. I have tried several things. I reinstalled the wireless card drivers and the screen saver worked once and only once. I uninstalled SP3 and again the screen saver worked once. Then not again. Do I need to reinstall Windows? Or any other ideas?
