Windows Login username. How to get rid of one?
by Guest rsl18@sbcglobal.net- 1 reply

I had to do a destructive reinstall of Win XP, from the original CD, about a year ago, with the step-by-step instruction of a MS tech support person. He had me create a "temp" login username, which happened to have an icon of a couple of horse heads. For another reason, no longer operative, I created another login username, which has an icon of a toy racecar, I think. I now wish to get rid of these surplus usernames. For one thing, a lot of hard drive space is taken up with files for one of the usernames. I could simply delete the files for the surplus identity, but that is probably not the way to do it properly. How do I get rid of Windows login u…

shutdown script
by Guest Sailor- 0 replies

I am trying to disable loopback adapeter with a shutdown script. It appears that when the script is running the network adapter is not found or it doesn't even disable it. I can enable and disable the adapter without any problems when I have not requested a shutdown. It appears that the network adapter information is all "gone" and not available anymore when the OS shutdown / reboot routine has started. Is there some other place I can to get this accomplished earlier before the network information is gone? e: cd \jobs\reboot date /t >reboot.txt time /t >>reboot.txt echo disabling loopback>>reboot.txt netsh interface set interf…

Howdy, For some reason my default search from the Windows Desktop Search now always goes to Ask.com. I have played around with the default search options and Google is set as my default (which is what I want) However, it still always goes to Ask.com. when I search the web from the desktop search option. I don't see how to get rid of this. Any help? It is annoying. Thanks in advance!

Another window pops up called Customize Notifications. It shows 2 lists.....current items and past items. On the past items list are programs I no longer have on my computer, but they are still listed there. How do I delete them from this list? Thanks.

Help!! I need to delete the Windows Update files.......
by Guest AllenM- 7 replies

My C: drive is nearly full with less than 600 MB free space left. And it is all of the Windows Update downloads. I only use 2x18 GB SCSI drives mirrored for my OS and all I basically have on C: is the OS and system programs. Buy my Windows directory is using about 14 GB of the space. C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB823182$ Can I delete these? Or move them to another volume in case I need to uninstall (highly unlikely) these updates? I know I will not be able to use Add/Remove programs to remove once I get rid of these but this is my only option. thanks in advance and apprecite any quick post back.

Tracking down registry startup..

Dear All, Every time the computer boots something in the registry causes a "My Computer" window to pop up It's not in win.ini system startup etc as I disabled all in msconfig.exe and still the "My Computer" window pops up It's not in the usual places like Run, RunServices as I searched with nothing to find. I want to track down in a log file what activity takes place in the registry as the computer is turned on so that I may find what is causing the "My Computer" window to pop up. Thanking you in advance, Carlos.

help downgrading a Dell Inspiron w/ Vista to XP Pro

hi all, just got a new Inspiron 1525 preinstalled with Vista Home... and I need to install XP Pro however when using the Dell Reinstallation Disk for XP Pro SP2 (from previous purchases), it is not detecting the Hard Drive. I have looked around and found the setting in the BIOS set to AHCI under SATA operation.. there is an option to change to ATA, but I'm getting a warning and I just want to make sure I won't do any permanent damage. Warning says changing this "may prevent your operating system from booting or requrie a resinall." which would seem to be okay since that's what I'm doing... It also had me disable the "Flash Cache Module" before b…

XP Pro "Repair" problem
by Guest Ross- 3 replies

I am trying to use my XP Pro disk to do an XP Repair. Below I will detail the steps I do and the problem I end up with: 1. Boot up with the XP disk in the cd rom 2. Go to the point where I get the option to “enter R for repair” 3. The PC goes into DOS mode and I get asked “which windows installation would you like to log onto”. I enter the number “1”. 4. Then I am asked to type “Administrator Password”. I have no administrator password so I leave the space blank and just hit enter. 5. I then get the prompt “C:\Windows>”. 6. At this point I am stuck. Because it does not matter what I enter, I keep getting a message that says “command …

I'm trying to automate some printer installs and capture the printer settings. I'm trying to use rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry command to capture the printer settings in a file that I can use during the installation process. The command I'm using is rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /Ss /n "<printer name>" /a "<location to save .dat file>" I've tried the command with and without a "d" (no quotes) at the end and I keep getting "Printer User Interface, Printer command failed.. < the command > Operation could not be completed"

IE7 and Firefox Hang When Coming Out of Screen Saver Blank Screen
by Guest MainframeGuy- 0 replies

I apologize if this is here somewhere but I haven't found it. I recently installed IE7 in XP-Pro with FP3. When my screen saver (SETI) would go to the blank screen and I would awaken it I could do one or two things and then it would hang. No Ctrl>Alt>Delete, nothing. Power off and back on, it would come back. Said to heck with IE7 and installed Firefox -- same thing. I've disabled SETI but once it goes blank and I try to awaken it -- hang. I figure it must be a WIN-DOZE issue as it's doing the same thing with IE and Firefox. Suggestions appreciated!!

Hi My domain controller which is the PDC has encountered some warning and errors during NTP time synchronization. The errors are logged in this order. 1) Event 38 Source w32Time ( logged for a few times) 2) Event 47 source w32Time Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from manually configured peer <IP address> after 8 attempts to contact it.
