EFS & Virus Infection & Unable to login
by Guest Adam- 3 replies

Hello, I'm fixing a computer at my work. The computer has been infected with lots of viruses and malware. Most of the viruses have been removed by plugging the hard drive into another computer and removing them that way. Unfortunately, one of the users has used EFS to encrypt lots of important documents. I am unable to login at all, as soon as the welcome screens quits after successful username and password have been entered the system hangs and does not complete loading. The installation of windows is not important to me but the documents are. My questions are: Is it somehow possible to export the Recovery Agent without being logged in as …

The Green Stuff Moved
by Guest Marc- 2 replies

While surfing, my electricity went off for about a second. The computer worked okay after rebooting. Then I decided to cleanup the disk and run a defrag on my C. The big glob of unmovable files, which used to be at the left end of the defrag screen, now appeared in three pieces at the extreme right side, and there was a big blank space on the left where the unmovable files used to be. Defrag moved files into that clear space. Now I'm concerned that the heads have to sweep the entire disk to read the unmovable files. Won't that cause excessive thrashing and wear of the HDD? Before, the unmovable files invariable occupied the extreme left end and we…

Client machines slow under hyper v
by Guest muaddib32- 2 replies

I have two servers I am running as hyper v clients on a new W2008 server. They are running very slowly. It takes minutes for them to perform the simplest action such as opening IE. The virtual disks are stored on a RAID5 array. I used to have them running as clients on a Athlon3200 W2003 server with 2GB RAM running VMWare server and they were much faster. The disk then was just RAID0. Can anyone suggest how I can speed them up. Without adding extra hardware as I shouldn't have thought it was necessary. Cheers Ben Host: Windows 2008 Standard (normal not server core) 8GB RAM Xeon 5030 processor Client 1 Small Business Server 2003 2GB RAM…

ebay toolbar - is it becoming crapware ? ...
by Guest RJK- 2 replies

Has anyone got the "heads-up" on what happens when I click on my ebay toolbar, to go to the ebay.co.uk, When I clicked on it tonight there seemed to be some attempt to redirect me to http://www.rover.ebay.....lotsofgobbledygookhttp://www.ebay.co.uk\Moregobbledygook ..... and I got an IE7 "Page cannot be displayed" ..MVP hosts file :-) ....perhaps ? or, if you like show me ebay "within" another page, sort of thing. I did a quick Google on it and got the impression that http://www.rover.ebay.co.uk is an affiliate of ebay. It seems that one cannot click on the "ebay" in the ebay toolbar to get straight to ebay any more, i.e. you have to type it in yo…

Hi, We have to make decision what edition of MS Windows Server to choose as on OS for our web server. According to the features description for a particular edition, I think the web edition could be just fine. Under what circumstances we could find ouerselfs in a position that we need to replace the Windows Web Server 2008 by the Windows Server 2008 Standard edition? Thanks, Lubomir

While in Explorer, Word or Excel, when I right click a file I get an error message related to the file winword.exe. I am then asked to report the error to Microsoft, which I did and got no reply. I then get a message that the file is being recovered. How can I fix this problem? Thanks in advance.

When I run msconfig, all I get is an hourglass cursor for 5 or 6 seconds, then nothing. In Task manager, msconfig is listed as a running process, though using no cpu cycles. Does anyone have an idea how I can get it running properly?

IE 6 process size keeps growing
by Guest dougfish- 2 replies

I have a web app that causes IE 6 use a lot of memory over time. I'm trying to isolate what part of my web app is causing the leaking, so I've been working on creating small HTML pages that represent certain aspects of my app and seeing if they cause the IE process size to grow. The problem is that I have created a trivial page --- a page with a a body, text inside the body (about 25k of plain text for what that's worth) and that's all. When I do refresh on this page repeatedly and observe Windows Task Manager I see the Mem Usage grow from 55793K to 128588K over about a half hour. I have used windows update to make sure IE6 has the current fixes. …

Server Standard 2003; I want more than 4gb ram!
by Guest TomSullivan- 2 replies

I asked a question earlier about installing Server Standard 64-bit, but no one told me if I can use the same license for both editions. Second, is there a way to run more than 4gb of ram on the 32-bit version. It seems pretty arbitrary that the enterprise version can use /PAE and Standard can't. Is there some sort of 3rd party software that can do this? I don't need all the extra stuff that enterprise comes with, nor do I want to pay that much for it. Thanks for your time! Tom

Giving contract developer access
by Guest Hugh G. Johnson- 3 replies

I'm a small business owner which makes me the System Administrator of my web and database servers. In the past I've given contractors Administrative rights when they used the machines, but now I'm starting to use developers from other countries and they are logging in via the WAN. My question is there a way to give a contractor access to the machine to create SQL databases, websites, create directories, change file permissions, etc. without being an administrator, and even blocking access to files I don't want them to? I thought Power Users would be best, but I've been told thats a no-no. Sincerely, Hugh

Installing Driver

I am trying to install an updated videodriver. I downloaded it from the manufacturer's web page; uninstalled the current one through the Device Manager that asks me to restart the computer when it finishes. Problem is that when it restarts it tells me that it encountered new hardware and before it gives me a chance to go into the 'Add new hardware' in the ControlPanel, it finds its own, which is an old one and I am unable to install the newer version. Help! Thank you JB
