Quick background: Windows Server 2003 Native-mode AD, XP workstations. We have employees in our environment who do not have admin rights on their local computer and are installing Firefox to their systems by pointing the install path to their Documents and Settings folders. Because of this non-standard install, the path to the Firefox executable is not consistent. I have found a way to block access to an executable using a path restriction in Group Policy, but is there a way to block access to an executable by name regardless of its path? (Note: this GPO would have more applications than just Firefox, but it is the example I'm facing right now.) …

Double installation of XP
by Guest Nolan- 7 replies

During startup, when I hit the key (I can't remember which one it is at the moment) to do a step-by-step startup, my computer goes to the 'select operating system' screen, which shows TWO installations of XP. This evidently happened when I took it to the shop a few years ago for an upgrade from ME. I don't know what the &*^$# they did, but evidently they managed to install both a valid and a non-valid copy. I just recently discovered this, and that shop (surprise) is no longer in business. I can't get any upgrades, because the MS website is detecting a non-valid copy of XP, which I suspect is the one that is not the default, which the machine norma…

I posted a problem I had here that when I started up my comp; the game's CD would start it's setup prog everytime. Very annoying, someone suggested tweakUI and that worked for awhile but I finally fixed it by ripping it out of control panel and have ME find it again on the next start up.

Basically I need some way for my application to be able to detect if explorer launched it in response to it being in the startup folder and the user logging in. I would like to be able to distinguish between explorer launching my application at startup, and the user clicking the link in the startup folder (this precludes using a simple command- line parameter). I'd like something similar to keyAELaunchedAsLogInItem kAEOpenApplication AppleEvent (http://developer.apple.com/ documentation/Carbon/Reference/Apple_Event_Manager/Reference/ reference.html#//apple_ref/doc/c_ref/keyAELaunchedAsLogInItem). The only thing I saw close to this was the WM_WTSSESSION_CHANG…

In "How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows Server 2003" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042), found the following, but could not find where and how to configure it: All available synchronization mechanisms The "all available synchronization mechanisms" option is the most valuable synchronization method for users on a network. This method enables synchronization with the domain hierarchy and may also provide an alternative time source if the domain hierarchy becomes unavailable, depending on the configuration. If the client cannot synchronize time with the domain hierarchy, the time source automatically falls back to the time source that…

What should I do? ( Generic Host Process for Win32 Services hasencountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for theinconvenience. ) "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." "If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost" The above is the very annoying error message I am getting whenever I go online. If I click on any of the button, the online session stops, and I have to reboot the computer in order to get back online. I have checked the error on search engines, and found the following "possible cures" -- …

Ghosting Issue
by Guest Parvardigar- 8 replies

This is very uncomplicated. I have at work here only Dell Optiplex GX1's running Windows 2000. On all the machine I ghosted from former harddrive 9GB to new harddrive 80GB. No problems. On this one machine I have ghosted in the usual fashion the 9GB to the 80GB drive. And I did this on two new fresh WD harddrives ending up with (after installing the newly Ghosted drive) this Blue Screen Stop 000000007B and so on ending with Inaccessible_Boot_Device. I've ran the Ghost several times and ending with the blue screen message. In Bios I alter the device to auto, and it is found. Bios fine. I can upon reboot launch safe, safe with networking, LKG, and so on.…

How to configure ftp.exe to use passive mode (PASV)?
by Guest curiousgeorge408@hotmail.com- 6 replies

How can I configure ftp.exe to use passive mode (PASV)? By ftp.exe, I mean \windows\system32\ftp.exe, which I execute by Start > Run > cmd > ftp. (I call this MS ftp.) On a whim, I have set Passive FTP in Internet Explorer (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced). Concomitantly, "use PASV" is set to "yes" in the Registry under HKEY_USERS\S-1-...\Software\Microsoft \FTP. All to no avail. (Should it also be set somewhere else?)

BSOD Error Screen DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
by Guest rusty7010- 1 reply

I am using Windows XP Home Edition, Dell 4600, IE7. This screen comes up just when I am "surfing" on traffic exchanges. It states that it is a Windows error and must shut down before damage is done. The following is listed on the screen: (The message about the DRIVER IRQL, as listed above in the subject line) In the instructions it says to "Disable BIOS Memory Options". I couldn't copy the wording on the blue screen, so I can't state exactly what it said, but it also had this: (0x0000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) This blue screen has come up about five times in the last three weeks. It just seems to happen when I am doing the surfing. I s…
