Something is changing the reg key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3\1803 from the desried value of 0 to 3 which prevents IE Downloads. I have a GPO that should be setting this key value to 0 but the only way i can achieve this is by using the command gpupdate /force /target:user. A logoff/logon or reboot does not overwrite the registry setting. Is this a bug ? Ideally i'd like to identify what is changing the key in the first place, any pointers on how to achieve this would also be much appreciated.

I used to have 3 external USB hard drives permanentaly connected to my computer and I had one USB drive that I would connect off and on. I am intending to consolidate all my external drives and have 'ejected' all of them. I also went into Disk Mgmt and disabled them. However, My computer and also Disk Mgmt. still lists "G, H, I, J" drive. If I add another drive, it shows up as K or later. Oh, I also went into the registry to delete the references there. How can I get rid of G, H, I, J and free them up for re-use ? Thanks,

Group for sysprep OS installers...
by Guest Jake- 1 reply

Hi, We are in the process of sysprepping a bunch of computers and they are also added automatically to our domain in the sysprep process. I would like to use the username and password of another user account than domain administrator in sysprep for security reasons. Which are the minimum group membership such a sysprep add-to-domain account needs? Regular user accounts can only add their computer to the domain a limited number of times, and in our case sysprep will run 100+ times. Thanks for a quick hint on this. regards jake

Firewire enclosure replacement
by Guest Lil' Dave- 19 replies

Recently had to replace a firewire hard drive external enclosure. The original, I simply turned it on while in XP, ran my imaging software and let it verify the image when done. All was normal, no problems. Set for quick removal in device manager by XP. The replacement, keeps bringing up a bogus new hardware found. Never finds any driver including internet. I tried removing the hard drive entry and the SBP entry in device manager. After reboot, I turn the firewire enclosure on, and it does the same thing all over again. Hard disk and SBP entries are there, same bogus new hardware. Image file verification fails everytime on that hard drive when de…

tape drive in 2008 server
by Guest Ivan- 3 replies

Hi all, I'm having problems using my tape drive under 2008 server in conjunction with backup exec. I'm trying to determine the reason why things aren't working, and I'd normally diagnose this by using ntbackup in 2003, and see if I could at least see the tape drives there. Being that 2008 doesn't have ntbackup, is there a way that I can check whether my tape drive is working with no issues?

I have just installed Windows XP Pro (SP2) on my computer. All the hardware drivers are installed and working normally. No other software has been installed yet. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this. I went online and did my Windows updates a few times, installing SP3 and whatever patches were offerred. I also installed Microsoft Update. Now for some reason, when I do Windows Update, or try to run the MS Live Messenger installers, I'm told that the installations have failed. Right now the following updates are outstanding: KB928365 - NET security update .NET 1.1 SP1 KB951213 - Silverlight 1.0 install The Live Messenger installer puts th…

Event Viewer has Green Highlights
by Guest David G. Hoch- 0 replies

I'm wondering if anyone else has ever seen this. I opened up Event Viewer on a Windows 2003 Standard Server and all icons in Event Viewer have a bright green border around them. Other than that, everything looks like it's working correctly, but I know that the green color is not normal. This is only happening on one of the two servers on the network. The second server does not have the green highlights. I've run a virus scan on the affected box and Symantec AntiVirus did not find anything. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, --David

by Guest Robbie Hatley- 8 replies

Greetings, group. I've got an annoying little problem with my Windows 2000 that keeps cropping up. Often, when coming back from stand-by, my system tray contains a little icon, a video terminal with a line descending and turning right, with a red X on the line. It looks like this: http://www.well.com/~lonewolf/system-tray.gif That's a 2x blowup of my system tray. All but one of the icons are known to me: Top Row: Power Settings Volume Control Nvidia Sound Settings Nvidia Video Settings Bottom Row: Epson Printer Settings English Input Method ***MYSTERY ICON*** Local Area Connection What the heck *IS* that mystery icon???…

copying user profiles

Is it possible to copy the default administrator profile to another user with administrative rights? I have a 10 workstation network that was setup with each one logging in as the default administrator. I'd like to swap all the settings over to another user with administrative rights and then later downgrade this user to a "power user". Is this possible?
