http://www.neowin.net/news/main/08/05/30/microsoft-taking-official-petitions-to-keep-xp If you can remember back a few weeks, Steve Ballmer went on record saying that Microsoft would consider extending the life of Windows XP if enough people asked for it. Afterall, many people don't want to upgrade to Windows Vista because they are perfectly content with XP. The problem was there was no way to ask for it. Sure, you could sign one of the many online petitions, but Microsoft considers those "non-official complaints" and the rest of us simply consider them silly. Well, word has been passed down to the tech support teams (and then on to Neowin) that they a…

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate you sticking with me through this. Someone sent me the 3 DLL files I was missing. I installed them and was able to run the repair tool for IE6SP1. But that didn't help. I cleaned up my startup items with help from the group. I deleted a lot of unnecessary files. I download IE6sp1 zip from an e-mail and Gary walked my through the overinstall. I follow your advice on just about every post. Forgive me for not answering all but we spent about 24 hours just going through this. This is my third day and we are finally fixed. I think what did it is I removed my firewall.....'Trial of Transgressions'....I think that was the name. and …

http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070913/#story1 By Scott Dunn Microsoft has begun patching files on Windows XP and Vista without users' knowledge, even when the users have turned off auto-updates. Many companies require testing of patches before they are widely installed, and businesses in this situation are objecting to the stealth patching. Files changed with no notice to users In recent days, Windows Update (WU) started altering files on users' systems without displaying any dialog box to request permission. The only files that have been reportedly altered to date are nine small executables on XP and nine on Vista that are used by WU itself. Mi…

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP, SP2 with AVG, A-Squared, Spybot and Comodo with DSL connection. I haven't done anything or added anything but today when I logged on the computer it was unusually slow even with only (1) program running. I thought perhaps I might have picked up a virus or malware so I ran Spybot and it came out clean. I then checked Microsoft Updates to see if any new updates were there but it just seemed to hang up and did nothing although the Task Manager said it was running. I then started to run AVG and checked to see if were any updates but it failed each time I tried to update it. I thought maybe they have a newer version so I delet…

I have a Gateway computer with the following: 1) a 1400-MHz Pentium 4 processor, 2) 256 MB of RAM, and 3) 40 GB of hard-drive space. The computer is running Windows Millennium Edition (ME). A month ago, I bought a Brother MFC-240C printer. This is a multifunction device: printer, copier, fax, and scanner. Recently, my "starter" yellow-ink cartridge ran out of ink, and one other cartridge is about to do the same. At the Best Buy store where I bought the printer, Brother cartridges are sold for $13.50 each. I believe that these are the LC51B, LC51Y, LC51C, and LC51M cartridges. Well, I have discovered the website known as http://www.ink4less.com This …

Are registry cleaners a good idea or bad? I have done some reading and some say they are bad and some say they are bad. Has any one here had any experience with them good or bad. Or are they even necessary looks like Microsoft would build it into the operating system if it were needed. Sammy Castagna

Is there some such concept as "residual electricity"??? There was a problem with a computer at work...it's a new Dell running WinXP Pro...everything's fine, I go to lunch and come back to a blank screen that won't wake up from power-save/sleep mode!! I do the obvious and check connections, making sure they're secure and whatnot. I turn off the computer and turn it back on a few times, to no effect! Tech Support suspects some kind of a "power management" issue -- whatever that is -- and suggests that I leave the system off for a few minutes, literally, to let things "clear"...whatever that means. Sure enough, however: it works! So now I'm here asking, b…

Over the last three days, I've tried to access two separate youtube links on two separate occasions to find the W98 system freezes as the page is initially displayed. No keybd/mouse response. Required a hardware reboot to recover. I don't normally access youtube, but had done so in the previous week without problems. First link was: The first time the problem occurred, I did a quick disk check - lost clusters found (and repaired). I retried the same link with number crunching background activity disabled - with the same result. Repeated disk check and then attempted to run defrag - incomplete after hitting a bad sector. This was repaired by running …

XP Death Watch http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/05/27/XP-deathwatch-T-minus-five-weeks_1.html Even though it has had its own problems of late, Windows XP remains the most-used version of Windows. The newest data from Web metrics vendor Net Applications, for example, pegs XP as driving 73 percent of the personal computers that went online last month, five times the nearest competitor, Microsoft's own Windows Vista. Which is why an impending deadline five weeks from today is important. According to Microsoft, June 30 is the last day it will permit retailers and OEMs to sell the nearly seven-year-old operating system. [ Make your voice heard.…

If this is the wrong 'forum', please let me know and also where to turn. Since I'm using WinME, I figured it would be worth a try: In Properties/Settings under 'Colors' the color red is now completely missing, while at first it sporadically changed back to 'normal' with all colors present. This makes the display appear greenish and the former blue purplish. Otherwise no changes. It seemed to coincide with the loss of my 'WinZip' (just a guess). Does this indicate the monitor going bad'? Or is the cause somewhere else? If it can be fixed, please let me know. Harry.

He said it short-circuited key software programs he counts on: Quicken for balancing his checkbook, Lotus Notes e-mail and a networking program that connects his home to the office. His Sony camcorder also doesn't communicate with the PC properly. "Basically they don't work," s…
