Windows XP cannot retreive device driver list
by Guest Nick- 6 replies
This presented itself when we tried to install a new flash drive. Windows cannot find a driver for it. We have one of the same exact model that we have used previously and works fine. I tried uninstalling the USB bus and redetecting (restarted too) but then Windows cannot locate drivers for the USB bus. We have found that no new device can be loaded unless there is a script that installed the driver completely (for instance, Dell drivers). Also, when we select "I have a disk...", and then "select from list" no devices are found even if "only show compatible" is not checked. In fact, the only devices that are shown when we select "show all devices" are…

re ending MS's Action Pack subscription

Hello, After several years of subscribing to Microsoft's Action Pack I have decided to stop as most of the software is no longer relevant to what I do. It does seem a little hard that it appears that I will have to buy a full priced copy of Office Pro. Is this true? No reduced price for ex-Action Pack users?! Cheers,

ODBC drivers missing
by Guest ACC- 0 replies

When I open ODBC Data Source Administrator, 3 User DSN's are listed: dBASE Files, Excel Files, MS Access Database. If I try to configure any I get an error message 'The setup routines for ...ODBC driver could not be found. Please reinstall the driver.' When I go to the Drivers tab, it is empty. The PC is winXPpro SP3, with MSOffice 2003 standard SP1. I have tried reinstalling Office, but this hasn't added any ODBC drivers. Can anyone give me a clue as how to reinstall the ODBC drivers on their own? -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been checked for all known viruses. The information…

Hello In Windows 2003 Server users can also be put into one or more groups. By putting users into these groups the users may inherit permissions and privileges that were not granted to them directly. If asked to administer user accounts to an existing Windows 2003 Server installation how would one track down all of the groups that a user account belongs to and how would one know what all the permissions and privileges are that the user inherited and were assigned directly? -- JB

Dear Group, I can't find a technical monitor group, and many of you are at the cutting edge of compuer hardware as well as software. I am seeking an HDCP compliant 30" LCD Dual-Link DVI-D 2560 X 1600 Monitor to enable me to run Blu-ray on my computer as well as to have higher resolution and greater size in Windows Ultimate 64-bit. I just spoke with HP regarding their LP 3065, and I couldn't find anybody who knew anything. I have never liked HP much, and I am sure they just rebrand their monitors anyway. Samsung, whom I like, does no seem to have an affordable HDCP compliant monitor in that size and resolution. Any suggestions? Thank you! Jim

Help with setting password
by Guest Ryan- 5 replies
Hi, Ive been trying to protect my computer so that other people can't use it. I tried setting up a password, and then using the welcome screen, so that people need to enter a password to get it. This did not work. The computer did not show the start up screen, and just logged straight in. So I tried using the startup option of having to type in your username and password. This also did not work. I can use the Windows button + L to lock the computer, but all it takes to get in is for someone to press the restart button, and then the computer will restart, bypassing the password protection. Please help, I've looked everywhere and don't know what to do!

RE: windows installer trying to find a program I have spent the whole day trying to fix the same problem. I am unable to access my HP Image Zone and I cannot get the durn thing to go away! I too tried to find a file named Photo Gallery to delete it without having any success finding the file. I had purchased and installed a new program called Reg Cure this morning. It scanned my computer files and found more than 1000 errors on my computer After I hit fix errors this monster (Photo Gallery) showed up on my screen. I have written to be reimbursed for that program as I removed it from my computer. It is really working on my last nerve. Have you found a …

Move "pagefile.sys" to a different drive
by Guest Bill- 22 replies

I have a partitioned drive that was allocated by an idiot, so it's a major pain to keep the smaller (c:) partition small enough to be in a condition where it's possible to run a defrag. It would help quite a bit if I could move my pagefile to the second of the two partitions. Is that a simple change in the Registry and a re-boot? Thanks, Bill

Upgrading
by Guest B Farkas- 5 replies

I currently have a laptop with Windows XP Home SP3 installed. I need to install a software package that does not support Windows XP Home or Vista. I need to upgrade to Windows XP Pro but not sure what to buy. I tried a copy of XP Pro version 2002 but got an error message that stated the version on the computer was newer than on the CD and that I should restart the computer and install as a new installation. I would prefer not to format the hard drive as I have a large number of software packages (programming type & AutoCad) and files on the system that I cannot afford to lose. In my computer under the Help Tab/About Windows, I have version 5.1 (Build …

Is there a way to make the user's desktop read-only upon login? Is this even a good idea? I just hate when users start saving all their docs to the desktop...so I figure if they can't save to the desktop this will force them save to their my docs or public folder. - anthonyx26

Shutdown/Poweroff Workstations at night automatically
by Guest lforbes- 7 replies

I am quite surprised Microsoft hasn't come up with a reliable piece of software to power off workstations at night. I have tried using both shutdown.exe (no ability to cancel) and beyond2exec (errors out on the server) with no real luck. I am looking for a reliable but inexpensive way to shut computers off at night that gives some type of logging. I have 300 computers and need to make sure they are shutting down without check each and everyone's event viewer. I see lots of batch file type utilities but they seem to rely on Scheduled Tasks to run. If Scheduled Tasks was reliable it would be fine, but unfortunately it isn't. I don't care if there …

typed words are appearing backwards
by Guest KateKelly- 5 replies

I have a laptop and recently loaded a bunch of music into the media center. It copied everything from My Documents. I started deleting everything that wasn't a music file until I read the entire question which asked if I wanted to delete this from my "PC". I thought it was deleting from the media folder with the music. I've had trouble since then. Maybe this is related. When I type on the keyboard it appears backwards if I type "Kate" it shows up "etak". The letters are not backwards, just the words. I've managed to get good at typing backwards but it's time to fix it. Any thoughts? Thanks - Kate

Audio Drivers Problem with SP2
by Guest ktemp72- 3 replies

Hello, I recently built a new system with Windows XP Pro 64bit with Service Pack 2 Operating System included. So far, I have had no success in getting audio working for my system. The problem lies within drivers for my audio hardware. When trying to install these drivers, I receive and error message saying: "HDA Audio Bus required". I have searched the internet for days looking for a way to fix this problem and have come across many different supposed solutions, none of which have worked. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=901105 This is the link that I have been referred to the most, containing the hotfix kb901105 for windows xp64. However, when …

hi all, it has been difficult finding any info or guides on how to set up my server for game hosting, so i hope someone here can help! Let me start out by saying the hardware and bandwidth are more than adequate to run a dedicated server here. I am running windows server 2003 enterprise edition x64, and i would like to know what role to run for a server that will be used only for hosting a dedicated gaming server, and any management or setup tweaks, bandwidth and security tips would also be helpful, i dont need game specific help, i have that covered , the server can run the dedicated mode now, but i have not really finished setting it up properly, just ou…

lots of HDD activity after reboot, can't find source
by Guest Brad- 3 replies

I have an XPproSp2(nowSp3) w/all updates, that was locking up for no apparent reason. It started with SP2, so I updated all critical updates w/Sp3 and I still have the issues. I've shut down all programs in 'msconfig' startup and services (non-msoft) and I get a lot of HDD activity after rebooting, for about an hour or so (I haven't really been able to time it). When I go into 'task manager' the performance tab says cpu is using 30% +/- 3 or 4, but the processes tab doesn't reflect the cpu usage as to what's causeing the activity. I also don't see any obscure items in the processes tab. Any suggestion on how I can find out what's causing the HDD acitivity and w…

I want to access a computer that has no user attached to control some functions on it. I have modified two .htm files buried deep in the C:\Windows folder to enable automatic Allowing of ORAS connections and take-control requests. When I disconnect there is a dialog box that comes up on the remote computer that say I disconnected. Is there any way I can disable that dialog box?
