I have XP Home on my computer. It is a legal copy. It came installed on computer and always will be there even if reformated. I was adding a port to my network settings and it said I needed to restart my computer before they would take effect. I restarted and windows dynamic update came up. It started installing XP Pro with out any disk in the drive. I dont even own a XP disk for this to happen. Well there was no stopping this so called upgrade from happening so I waited it to complete. This may not be the right forum for this question, but I was not quite sure where to post it. This has occurred recently with no updates having been made to the PC. It was first noticed with BitComet, my torrent download app, which was giving scripting errors all the time. I updated it to the latest release, but the problem remains. Whenever I change view in the app, I get a script error dialog. The other thing I noticed is that while I was looking for BitComet using Google, the search button would not work via a <return> key press. This always used to work before. In Documents and Settings folder resides Application Data Folder, it has at least 3 gigs of file space used up, my question is, what affect does it have on the applications listed and can you safely delete any of the folders and their contents. On one of my other computers this Application Data Folder does not exist? Thanks

I am constanting getting two error messages on two ".exe" files that I have no idea what they are. The error message is "Application failed to initialize" "Press to cancel". The two unknown appliations are: NOTIFYALERT.EXE AND RNG.EXE. Also this address is displayed with the errors messages: (Oxc0000135). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've installed one application, but it was too ugly and I want throw it out. It placed all files in C:\Program files directory without creating appropriate folder. I checked setup log and find files it installed. I am not sure for one file: VB40032.DLL - does program installed this file or it has rewrited an existing file? Hello. One of the things I dislike about xp (and previous versions of windows) is that sometimes it's difficult to figure out how to cancel an action. Like when you accidentally press the right mouse button somewhere, you can press escape to bail out from the menu. Now sometimes it happens people accidentally press the left mouse button on a file or folder in the explorer, they drag around with the items and they don't want to release the mouse button somewhere and actually copy or move files. My method of bailing out in that case is to find a location on the screen where I get an icon that indicates the contents can't be copied there and I release the mouse but…

I have recently had a new pc at work as has my colleague (dell inspiron 6400). Since having my new laptop the connection when in server 2003 is disconnecting intermitted for 30 seconds to a minute. The settings are the same as my previous laptop which never disconnected. Is their any security updates which could affect this or configurations with the new laptop? After using the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\AppInit_DLLs key to load a DLL into all processes, I now get a BSOD on startup. I've fixed this before by using the Windows XP CD to open the command prompt and delete the DLL, but I don't have the Windows CD with me right now. So, my question is, is there any other way to have Windows or even the command prompt open without loading the AppInit_DLLs? Thanks in advance.

I am having the Windows Installer problem where the installer tries over and over again to install SOMETHING. I have no idea what is being installed. 1) Is there some installer feature to list all products installed and the success of the process? 2) Can I just disable this? 3) Any other suggestions? Are there any products which can solve this annoying problem?

I have two users who are configured as account operators. It appears that they cannot change or reset passwords on all AD accounts. There are some accounts they get an access denied message on. I am trying to understand what would cause this. I was under the impression account operators can reset and change passwords and unlock accounts on all accounts except system and administrator accounts (domain admin, enterprise admin, etc). It appears this way when they try and reset their own account as well through ADUC.

When I use an old IDE hard drive with pre-installed Windows XP Professional, my new computer doesn't recognize it. The computer works fine if I use an empty, formatted IDE hard drive and install Windows. The hard drive came from an older computer that had a different motherboard. Is there any way I can use the old hard drive (which has all of my programs) in the new computer? Or must I format the drive and reinstall Windows? Occasionally (but not always) when I right click on a file name in Explorer to get the drop-down menu, the file instantly disappears. It's not in the recycle bin, or anywhere else. This system is Windows XP Pro maintained to the latest maintenance and security levels. Currently I have to do backups before I touch any files, as there is no recoverability (that I know of).

Hi, We have a 32bit application using the Volume Shadow Copy API on 64-bit W2K8 (Longhorn beta3 is installed). Our 32-bit application is using the Windows 2003 VSS API library. There is no problem doing this with 32-bit W2K8, the problem is only with 64-bit. When InitializeForBackup() is called it is returning 0x8000ffff (E_UNEXPECTED). Hi, I upgrade many servers "2003 SP2 standard" to "2003 SP2 R2 standard" - without any problem. A handfull of machines failes with an error "An Application is running - Reboot before install" (free translated from German). The reboot did not repair this problem. I stop many services and tasks but the problem is the same. Strangely is the fact all machines use same configuration (hardware, software like SMS and RIS/WDS). Hi I am using Windows XP Pro. When I purchased my laptop last year, someone transferred all my settings and files from my old laptop. I find that I have to log on as user, not Administrator. That has not been a problem. However, I now wish to change the user password and would prefer that I be the Administrator rather than the user - after all, I am the only person using my laptop and all the files are mine. Is this possible, and, if so, how do I go about it? I am terrified of locking myself out of all my files!
