Remote Time Update
by Guest Lost in Microbiology- 1 reply
We have two notebook computers in the field that are not connected to the internet or network. The users have limited accounts. Is there a way to update the time zone (or clock time) as a limited user without giving them the administrator password? Or even a batch file I could create and write to a disk or flash drive to have them boot and/or use? These computers contain patient information, so all wireless and lan setting were disabled so the sites could not modify certain settings. Thanks for any help or ideas for life science inclined.

File server search
by Guest John- 1 reply
I am not sure where to post this question but I suspect I will get a few... different suggestions. We have an AD domain with 2003R2 servers, and many files stored on server file shares. We would like to use search to look for words inside documents (mostly MS Word, som MS Excel). Most of the clients are XP pro. The search from the clients works sporadically. When we say to search the contents all of the files in a folder and sub-folders sometimes it finds it and sometimes not even though you know it is there. Is there a tool or a better way to do this where the files are? TIA

Loss of Focus Problem
by Guest Norm Dresner- 5 replies
Computer is a Dell 9100 Inspiron Laptop with WinXP SP3 and all later automatic updates. Randomly while typing, the open window loses focus. We can't correlate it with anything on the keyboard or mouse. Further, I can't figure out where the focus is! All global keys (e.g. Windows key, Ctrl-Alt-Del) still work as normal. If we tap the right mouse button, the focus point is restored to the point where we were typing, though no mouse icon or cursor is visible on the screen. I think as a first step, I'd like to find out where the focus has gone to. It's not any open window and it's not the desktop because these can be tested by typing keys that would h…

I am running XP Pro SP3 and I am having issues with thumbnails in folders that I have to refresh to get them back to the size I want them to be. I have read most of the posts about thumbnails and have insured that I am not having any of those issues. I have recently reformatted the hard drive and reloaded windows on it. I did not have had the problem before I reformatted the drive. Thank you for any info about this problem.

HELP! Chkdsk /r deleted files.
by Guest Display_Name- 3 replies

I had a machine running XP Pro SP2 that started complaining about a corrupt HAL.DLL error. I used MS's KB#314477 and used the XP CD to run a recovery. The recovery ran fine. I booted from CD, selected Repair existing install, got to the console, typed bootcfg /rebuild and then did a chkdsk /r. It successfully got past the HAL.DLL error and was able to boot to Windows. The problem is that not all my data is there. There is SOME of my data, but not all. It's like the PC was reset to sometime close to the original install, but with SOME of my data. HELP!!! It seems like to reset the MBR to sometime in the past. How can I at least get my data that is miss…

Wireless connectivity
by Guest Chrisp- 1 reply

Hi I have the following attached to my wireless home router. 2 x Windows XP computers, 1 x Windows Vista computers, 1 x Apple Mac computer, Apple TV, iPhone. Until last week all devices connected to the internet fine. One day both the Windows XP computers (from two different vendors) stop acquiring IP addresses and therefore cannot connect to the internet despite the fact that they have successfully attached to the router wirelessly. So I put in static information and they still could not see anything externally. I've run updates on them (by connecting them via an ethernet cable to the router) and it appears that they are up to date. I have subst…

Hi to forum members, My Dell 5150 XP+SP2 has been running like a dream for several years but I had to go and upset it and now need your help quite urgently. I have Tweak-XP Pro v4 installed but seldom use it. However I was reading some stuff about speeding up performance by optimising the Prefetch settings and went and clicked the Re-Initialise the Prefetcher button. When I rebooted the start-up items failed to load and the were no icons in the right hand side of the Task Bar just the clock. I used System Restore and everything is fine but the next boot returns to the no icons situation. I have checked the start-up activity using WinPatrol and all …

Task Bar Expands to 3 Lines.
by Guest Jack Gillis- 4 replies
This has been the week for abnormalities on my machine. WinXP SP3. This morning, I inadvertently dragged the right edge of the Quick Launch section over to the Notification Area. At that point, the complete taskbar expanded vertically to 3 lines and showed the clock as time, day name (Friday) and the date. I couldn't get it back to the normal one line by putting the mouse cursor on the top of the taskbar and moving it down. I would expand up but not reduce down. (Yes, the cursor did change to the double arrow as usual.) The task bar is not locked. Changing the properties to not show the clock or the Quick Launch buttons did not fix the problem nor…

Event 202 Paged Memory Pool Empty
by Guest Sandy Wood- 1 reply

Just inherited the task to administering our Win2003 Enterprise file server. The server has 16GB of ram and is connected to our SAN for our organization's file services. This morning I was copying some files in the SAN and I started getting some errors in copying large files. Seemed the server was out of storage. Looked like a memory issue. In checking the System event log, I ran across an Event 2020 for the Srv service. It said "The server was unable to allocate from the system paged pool because the pool was empty". Also, I couldn't Remote Desktop into the server. I could login at the server console but it was so low on resources it couldn't even load…
