An update. I removed the display panel again so I could get the type number from the back etc. but decided I don't have much to lose by playing with it a bit. So I re-fitted the cable and sure enough only a part of the screen was working properly but if I twisted the panel there are positions where the whole screen reappears. Normally however once I release the pressure the problem reoccurs. There are times if I put quite a bit of pressure on the screen panel the picture returns and stays for a while - but always later reverts to the fault condition. I notice when I do this the connector does not seem to be affected by the twisting so think perhaps it is the panel which is faulty. I have enclosed a picture of the panel info and seem to be able to get one from the states but can't find one in Europe!

Last year I picked up a cheap laptop - a Dell 6320 which I have been using for odd bits of work when away from home. I have been very pleased with it with an i5 processor and 8gb ram and it nips along at a fair speed so all in all I was very happy. However for the past 3 months my daughter has been hammering it somewhat - using it intensively for her university Graphics and IT design course and the poor thing has been being used 12 hours per day for a while now. Last week she came to me saying there was something wrong with the PC - and sure enough there was - the screen display was only showing the bottom half an image, the rest obscured by vertical lines. Suspecting the screen connector may be dirty I unplugged the screen and cleaned the contacts and reassembled and for a moment or two it seems to have worked but then failed in the same way again. After anther two attempt the problem worsened an now only about a quarter of the screen shows with the rest the vertical lines. The pc works perfectly with an external monitor so the graphics card is not the issue - it must therefore be one of two things - a) the screen panel has failed or b) the little cable to which it is fixed has failed - but which is it more likely to be? Additionally the screen type does not seem to be the regular one for this machine type - having a 2cm 30 pin connector whereas the norm for the machine is a 2.5cm 40 p[in connector. The 40 pins ones can easily be found but the 30 pin ones seem to be as rare as rocking horse poo. Before I invest in a new rather rare screen panel has anyone any suggestions?

I am running W10 and have direct lan connection to my router. On just one of my PCs a very odd thing has been happening recently. If I use the "Network Speed Test " app it only records a download of about 3.5mbps although the up speed is 45mbps - however if I use the Ookla app the up and down speeds are each about 97mbps. The "Network Speed Test" app seems however to work just fine on all other PCs - I have tried un-installing and reloading the app but it makes no difference and the down speed never gets above about 4mbps but the up speed is pretty fast - Not so long ago the down speed recorded OK -so is there any logical reason for the change in the speeds now being recorded on the one PC?

Below is the header for a message I received. It has come to my normal email address, (not any of my gmail accounts) yet purports to be about googlegroups - a system that before recently I had never heard of and have never used or even wanted to. I have had similar emails recently - they all appear to have strange message titles - i.e. not in normal print but a strange font and all seem to have a particular email contact in them somewhere "unknownperson@gmail.com" (name changed) but I have no idea who it is. I have also changed my own email addresses in the header to preserve my identity apart from the apparent sender others are not touched. Is this malicious or is someone trying to get me into their group - or is it something else? At the moment I am simply deleting all such messages. Thanks again for the hints. I have used several USB sticks and also the direct version - also tried downloading to another PC - tried each bios version. So like you I am out of ideas and intend leaving the machine as a W7 device as in that guise it works just fine with everything doing just what it should. Its only when I use W10 on that machine that I run into problems. As its an old device and possibly at the end of its useful life there is no point doing anything else.

Hi Rusty's Yes I did try using the USB drive on several occasions. I even tried sequential upgrading going from A17 to the next bios which is A19 but even that did not work. All three computers started with XP Pro 32 bit. When XP support stopped I bought new licences for all my machines and all were upgraded to W7 with clean installs to W7 pro 64 bit. Then when MS offered free upgrades to W10 all the machines were upgraded again using the automatic upgrade tool. However since then I have had a few HDD failures on various machines and so all three have at some time had clean reinstalls of W10 using whatever MS iso was the most current at the time. When I use the usb drive it seems to work fine at first - saying it is updating from A17 to either A19 (or A22) do I want to continue and on pressing yes it confirms it is doing the upgrade - then once the machine tries to restart I get the message saying its is doing the update but then it fails with a message saying the files cannot be found in the memory!

Hi and thanks for the tips but cant see any option for Virtulisation technology - also can't enter the MBX bios to see if anything there is affecting anything - he screen says Ctr-P and so I assume that means control and the p key together - but nothing seems to happen whe I do that - it simply boots as normal!

Yes the bios is set back to the original but the machine first came with XP as did the other two identical machines. I upgraded all three to W7 several years ago when support for XP finished and W7 worked absolutely fine on all three machines. When the free upgrade to W10 was announced I upgraded all three machines at that time but this one has always shown problems. It always has a shuddery mouse in W10 but not in W7, and also the network connections never work properly in W10 although work just fine in W7. I have tried two completely clean reinstalls of W10 with a version from over 1 year ago and the most recent (lest week) which always seems to go well but when operating the same issues always occur! The other two machines show none of the same symptoms with W10 and so I think that as the bios is the only thing that really differs it has to be something to do with that! . The rub is I cant upgrade it although I did it fine on the other two. I use the Dell site for all the upgrade files for all three machines - why is this one being difficult?

The reason for wanting to update te bios is that my other two similar machines have A22 and this one only A17 - the issue being that when I loaded W10 the machine would not work properly - the network connections would not connect and the mouse became jittery. The other two machines perform perfectly and the only real difference between them is the bios - they have the same motherboards and same amount of ram and are the same model - The battery seems fine - Dont now how to reset the bios to factory and there appears no password

Just tried removing 2 sticks of ram but exactly the same thing again. As the only things that were not working when running in W10 were the networking and a sluggish mouse, I am leaving the bios as it is and have reinstalled W7 which runs without any issues at all. Unless of course someone comes up with another way to cure the bios upgrade!

H Ken - I have just tried putting in new Ram in - all the sims are now different from those I had earlier but so far thats not changed anything - but there are four sims in at the moment - I will try taking 2 out and see if that makes a difference but that won't be for a day or two.

Thanks Starbuck - I have tried both using the older bios (A19) as a step and also loading from a flash drive as suggested but the result is exactly the same - it starts off fine and confirms I want to change the bios but when the system tries to reboot it fails and comes up with "could not find firmware in memory" message. So wat memory is it referring to ? It seems somehow it lose all the information it is supposed to be storing for the upgrade! - is that down to powering the cmos ? or maybe something else!

No - but whay would that make a difference? - the other two machines worked fine - could it be anthng to do with the cmos battery?

I have three pretty well identical Dell OptiPlex 755s and on two of them have updated the bios to A22 with no issues, The other still has A17 and I have downloaded the latest bios file and tried to update the PC using the self loading file but every time I run it I get a message saying the update has failed and "could not find firmware in memory". What can I do now? Will using a usb stick make any difference, I don't want to try it unless its safe. I think the old bios may be the cause of some other networking issues I am having with this particular machine.

I don't think it is the memory as I have another PC with the same amount of ram and no issues at all! I will be glad to see the end of edge but the latest ISO I downloaded and installed 2 weeks ago still had edge.

I have now given up on this and reverted the machine back to W7 from where it is working just fine. I may return to this at some time in the future but have other things which are more important a the moment.

Hi again - - I did try those suggetions but the mouse issue did not get cured so I think I have given up on this machine for now. I simply put in the old HDD and Its running W7 without any issues but it is an old PC and low spec (Dell 755 with 2ghz processor) so I am not too bothered. Its not that important in the scheme of things as its main use is for text applications in Spanish and the odd game for the kids. It seems to have a few other issues as well and the HDD drive with W10 on it seems to have a few errors and I dont have the time to reinstall on a new disk just now. I may return to it sometime in the future but this also solves the network issue on the other thread for now. Thanks for all your help

A reprieve :) - after a bit of googling discovered the PC issue might simply be dirty contacts on the power supply - so took all leads off and cleaned them with Servisol and hey presto a working PC again. BUT still got the lagging mouse and the absence of my network USB drive. The mouse only has problems when there are one or two windows open on the PC - I dont think it is down to memory size as I have another similar pc with the same memory which has no issues with the mouse. I tried changing the mouse but the effect is the same.

Sorry for tardy reply - forgot I had left this open. Anyway I have found two more multiport adapters and they all work fine in my setup which now is the router feeding a 2 port TP link near the router, then further away two more single poert adapters each feeding a pc and then two additional wifi adaptors, one feeding the tv and the PS3 and providing wifi in our lounge area and the other located in the far end of the house well away from the router supplying wifi for a Roku and a laptop. Even at the far end of the house over wifi we are getting well over 30mbps up and down so more than enough for our needs. Even thought the system is not of the highest spec (AV500) it is plenty good enough for what we are doing with it and works really well. Much better then the old wifi repeater system we used to have

Should have mentioned that the router USB drive shows up fine on all the other machines whether W10 or W7 - I cant even force the offending PC to look at it and although it connects easily to all the other shared options using \\sharename\ etc but if I do that for the router drive it says the location does not exist It seems only the router drive is invisible or not recognised for some reason. There has to be a simple reason for this!
