1. Not a problem really - its just the always come before all the other fonts so I have to scroll though them all before I see the fonts I want. - Anyway I was just curious to know what they are - and that has been answered so many thanks.
2. I've just tried that but the fonts still appear as options in Publisher despite having the hide characteristic showing in the fonts list - any ideas?
3. Wow and many thanks - that all makes sense now - I think many of these fonts must have come into my system from some software which originated in China for my overhead scanner- its hard to find them on the fonts list and some won't delete saying they are system fonts - but why? Anyway great detective work and again thanks.
4. When using MS Publisher I notice at the head of the lists of available fonts there is a large group where all the fonts seem to have normal names but starting with the @ symbol. What are these and where do they come from and why do they appear? - the list seems to grow over time! Can I get rid of them?
5. I had a similar issue with needing wi fi at a remote location and tried the wi fi extenders with only very limited results. Loads of drop out and the devices needed careful positioning and often rebooting. In the end, despite having misgivings, I tried a powerline adapter and even though the remote room is 100m away from the router it works absolutely fine - no drop out reasonable speeds and a clone of my wifi network to boot. So I don't even have to change settings on phones or laptops - simply go from one location to the other. The units I am using are by TP link with one sender unit and a wifi adapter at the other end which also has 2 Ethernet connections which I find useful. In fact I am so impressed by the system I have added another wi fi adapter to serve another place in the house which was a bit of a dead spot and everything has been working fine ever since
6. Hi Ken - I do need to get a more modern machine - some of my old Dells (especially the 755s) are now showing their age despite having been faithful and reliable machines over many years. They were all used in my wife's language school but she is now semi retired so they have become less used and less - and having 6 PCs in a household is a more than one each for our family! Will get a more modern machine soon - not sure whether to get a laptop or desktop though and I don't need any fancy graphics. Meanwhile for the scanning I am able to "borrow" my son's laptop which does have an i5 and 8gb of ram and runs the scanner software pretty well and I also have the freeware package which does most of what I need anyway so I think case closed now. Thanks again,
7. Hi again Ken You are a star - your illustration makes very good sense to me and gives a really perfect explanation as to why I am experiencing what is happening. For information my systems are all W10 64 bit. I am assuming if I now get a machine with an i5 running at 3.1ghz with 4gb or more of memory I may enjoy much better performance even than that specified! Seems no point just aiming for an i3 and an i7 is beyond my budget just now - and really would only be used in earnest for this particular software. Everything else I use runs fine on my aged Pentium duals! Thanks once again - Joddle
8. Hi Ken - there are two PCs that I have been using - one has 3.3 ghz processor and the other a 3.0 ghz - and both have 6ig memory. The scanner is a Czur MT16 and the software can be downloaded from their site but wont work without being connected to the scanner and the serial number used to trigger it. Czur support have already connected to my PCs via Teamviewer and seen the problem directly but said that the old processors I am using are simply too slow and the minimum spec is for an i3 running at 2.4Ghz with min of 2GB memory. (see product details from the link) I have found a workaround by using a freeware package to do the processing for me - (it is plenty good enough for what I do) but it would be good to have the proper SW working correctly so I will need to invest in a machine with a better processor - so I am thinking of an i5 quad core 3.1 ghz which should keep me "up to date" for a while at least!!! The scanner was bought via Amazon and I must say that the seller has been more that helpful in trying to find an answer to the issue and also had good response from Czur support in China. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N7IHPXL
9. I recently bought a scanner which comes with some pretty nifty SW which corrects problems like bent pages etc but on my PC the SW runs painfully slowly. On contacting the company support I was told my processor needed to me min 2.4 Ghz and min i3 - but mine is pentium dual core running at 3.3 ghz OK so my machine does not meet the min spec and I am going to have to get a better machine but why should a pentiium 3.3 be so much slower than an i3 2.4 when both are dual core? Can anyone explain that please?
10. OMG -- having googled for hours and tried all sorts of things I just noticed that I have a hard disk failing !!!! - can't think why I did not see this before. The disk shows as being there but if you try and access or manage it nothing it virtually hangs the PC! The HDD is the second in the tower and is used for backing up certain older files (most of which are also backed up elsewhere thank goodness) New disk put in and problem solved!!!!! Well at least for the PC - will see if its possible to recover anything later.
11. Starting to feel a bit stupid here - I have 4 systems almost identical (Dell OptiPlex machines) but one of them is acting a bit strangely. When I try and power down the PC using the normal windows shutdown menu, very often nothing happens - no messages noting at all!! - it simply stays the same. However sometimes it will start to shutdown but then just stops at the shutting down screen with the little things going round and round in a circle around the shutting down message. I am then forced to press the power button the stop the machine. The power options are set to the "balanced" (i.e. the recommended) setting and I have reset the default option but this is still happening. Alas this particular machine is the one my kids us a lot so there is no saying if they have not changed something else without realising. - but what could cause this? Any ideas please.???
12. Thanks - it explains a bit and gives a workaround which I have instigated. Surly though MS should be able to get a decent rendition of a PDF in Edge!!!
13. I am having an issue with Edge - it seems always to change the colours on PDF files. This has been happening ever since I upgraded my PCs to W10 and happens on all my computers In Acrobat or Reader the files always look fine but in Edge colours are changed radically. Please look at the sample here - on the left is the image as seen using Edge - i.e. colours very yellowish and not correct - and on the right is the image seen from either Acrobat or reader - i.e. unaffected and as it should be. So why does Edge do that? and can it be tweaked so it does not?
14. Virtually everything - the one thing I am not sure about is if I put a USB3 card into the PC will I get real USB3 connectivity or will it be something slower?
15. Yes the unit is permanently connected and at each close down the PC does a check to see if any new files have been created or modified and if so copies them to the backup drives so in effect I always have two copies of everything from that machine - I don't actual copy the operating systems as they exist on a partition on a 2TB drive, the rest of the drive is split into two further partitions used and it is these that get backed up. Yes there are two PCi ports expansion one short on and one longer one and the PC takes full height cards - I see these are pretty cheap and several types seem to be available with either 2 or 4 usb3 ports and some with an eSATA port as well. I don't need more than two USB3s as I already have 6 USB2 ports on the back and 2 on the front. The boxes I am looking at are on ebay - I search under "JBOD RAID 3.5 orico" which will bring up some of the units I am considering - there are other brands with similar specs as well.
16. Wow - thanks Ken - but obviously I have not made my intentions clear. Reason for using Dual box - I have two large HDDs in the master PC and so the dual drives are only to create backup versions of those - I don't need or want to use RIAD only the JBOD function as I don't want two extra boxes hanging from the PC when one bigger box will do the same job. The boxes I am considering all have USB3 connectivity and so if I can use the additional speed it would make backing up faster. Re the USB3 - - currently my PCs only have USB2 ports - and so I was thinking of adding and PCi express card to give USB3 connectivity in order to maximise the speed of the external drive. Drives being considered are http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORICO-Aluminium-Dual-3-5-Inch-SATA-Hard-Drive-HDD-RAID-Enclosure-USB-3-0-eSATA http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sharknoon-Raid-2-Bay-USB-3-2-Takes-2tb-Hard-Drives-or-Less-/322391526067?hash=item4b10084ab3:g:E7oAAOSwpLNYBJp-
17. I am wanting to connect a dual HDD box to one of my PCs to act as secure storage and a safety backup. I have seen several boxes which take two SATA drives and can be configured for RAID or JBOD - The question is - will either of my PCs work with a USB3 card - and if so can I connect a molex as seems to be required?
18. I have now but it made no difference - however on installing that I got a message about the ink levels for the black cartridge which had previously shown as OK - looks like that may be at least part of the problem - on taking it out I noticed there was no black ink at the jets - even when applying a damp tissue so a new one will be fitted tomorrow to see.
19. Have had my HP Envy 4500 printer for just over a year and all has been OK up until now when today the colour won't print correctly - its like there is simply no definition to the pictures and that colours are all wrong - they look like they are also a bit smudged. The test prints from the HP software look OK but when I print a photo or a simple picture the quality is dire - not at all usable. Thinking it was an ink problem I have been and bought a new genuine HP cartridge but the problem still persists. Have tried the auto cleaning routine but to no avail - its as bad as ever. Have reset to factory and tried again - still no better. Have tried printing from different PCs and different software packages but the result is always the same Before I chuck it in the bin is there anything else I could be looking look at?
20. I disabled the bit under the wi fi driver tab which says let it contol the power for ecconomy - and yes its working fine - have rebooted several times just to make sure and so far no failures!!!!:D
21. Maybe its letting the system eco control the wifi!! - turning the option off seems to have done the trick!
22. Thanks Ken WIll give that a go later - my daughter is doing her project on that machine at the moment so I dont want to muck anything up for her.
23. The router I am using has its own wi fi but is also running a powerline which terminates in another wi fi but the result is the same whichever wifi I use. Switching the wifi on and off does nothing - its only when I right click on the wifi icon and ask it to look for problems that all gets sorted until the next tie. Also in the same house there are two other laptops. One Asus running W10 64 and one running XP but both connect to the either of the wifi links without an issue. Alas the A.cer site seems to have no updated wifi driver (unless I am missing something!)
24. I have an Acer 5720 running W10 32 bit and have a nagging issue. The PC works fine apart from one thing. Every time I reboot or start up the wifi finds the correct router and wi fi signal but reports no internet despite being connected to the router. If I run the diagnostic it reports a problem with te adapter which it then repairs and then everything is OK - at least until the next time when the same things happens again. I have tried this on two different wifi networks and its always the same thing. The Ethernet works fine. Any ideas as to why this is happening? and any ideas how to cure it?
25. Tried that two or three times - no good - surprising thing is when using a different wi fi network it started to work fine again - although it was working on the old one before but now I am not there so cant retest - one of life's little oddities I suppose!.
