1. Very bUsy day today so may not get around to these operations for a day or two yet - wil post results when I do - meanwhile thanks to you all for your input.
2. I am now thinking of what I need for a complete rebuild on a new HDD - (not too scary as I have just done the same for 4 of my own PCs from XP to W7). Once I have located the W7 install disks and COA etc things should be pretty straightforward - but on the Acer site they only list 4 drivers in the W7 section for this PC (Acer aspire 7720) - so what do I use for the rest of the drivers - once the OS is loaded - the Vista ones? I can't seem to find any info on that aspect of a rebuild at all. I assume the reserved partition on the current machine is for Vista as that is what it was shipped with.
3. That had crossed my mind too - trouble is its not my PC but one a friend has given to me to try and fix - his IT knowledge is even worse than my own!!! Putting in a new HDD is no issue for me but I dont have all his installation disks - or even the licence code for the OS which at sometime has been upgraded from Vista to W7 ultimate. Time for a chat with him methinks.....
4. Have tried that - it loads fine but when it runs it crashes themain programme after some time. Also these crashes sometimes cause the machine to do a dskchk - not always but sometimes..
5. Ahh a bit too soon - tried relaoding malwarebyes new version - it ran for a while then crashed the PC - when it trie to restart I had a black screen with reported it could not find boot and PX1 and other PX something errors and Broadcom error - never seen that before - after forcing shutdown the machine booted up again fine. Have now uninstalled malwarebytes.
6. Well I seem to making some progress. I used the Acer update tools and downloaded the W7 drivers and installed them - now it does not blue screen in malwarebytes but it still exits the programme without finishing and now returnes to the desktop.... There were no chipset drivers on the Acer web for W7, only for vista - are they the same? Also looked at previous post but as I had deleted the printer there are now no options to uninstall
7. I used the kodak unistall printer tool which I downloaded from their website. Can't actually see a printers folder - where should I be looking for that? There is not one under the device manager section - but what was there under "other devices" was an unknown device. I tried to uninstall it and it appeared to go but returned next time I rebooted.
8. Well I tried uninstalling the kodak printer but nothing changed - it still crashes. I have run a little utility recommended to me to see what the crash is about and the results are posted below - perhaps they will mean something to someone! Where do I look now? On Mon 28/04/2014 08:08:30 GMT your computer crashed crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp This was probably caused by the following module: win32k.sys (win32k+0x6E076) Bugcheck code: 0x7A (0xFFFFFFFFC03FEB48, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000185, 0x6FB49880, 0xFFFFFFFFFFAD2174) Error: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR file path: C:\Windows\system32\win32k.sys product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System company: Microsoft Corporation description: Multi-User Win32 Driver Bug check description: This bug check indicates that the requested page of kernel data from the paging file could not be read into memory. The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time.
9. Thanks Nev - tried the hotfix but no joy with that - still blue screens - this time I was watching the file progression and it seemed to crash as it was checkng the programme files/Kodak folder - dose that help at all? will try uninstalling printers later tomorrow.
10. Ah - so much to learn Now I see - I get this - but what does it mean??? And why no blue screen in safe mode?
11. Thanks but it does not mean much to me - does it to enyone else? 12. I am running an Acer Aspire 7720 under W7 unlimate. and recently had a virus problem which I think I have cleared using the Kaspersky rescue and Avira resue system disks. The PC appears to be running fine with no sign of the the scareware which had infected the machine earlier. However when I run either a malwarebytes or antivirus scan it blues screens towards the end of the scan. If I run in safe more it does not blue screen and malwarebytes found some pup items whic it deleted but when I revert to normal mode it blue screen again just at the end of the malwarebytes scan. I ran the Avira rescue system under ubantu and if found two infecitons which it removed. however the system still blue screens when I run Malwarebytes in normal mode. The message I get in safe mode on the crash is as follows but the first file (the minidump) I can find but the second I can't seem to locate anywhere! but not sure what to do with the files anyway!!! Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 2057 Additional information about the problem: BCCode: 7a BCP1: C023B924 BCP2: C0000185 BCP3: 13788BE0 BCP4: 8EE49000 OS Version: 6_1_7600 Service Pack: 0_0 Product: 256_1 Files that help describe the problem: C:\Windows\Minidump\042614-58593-01.dmp C:\Users\Bob\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-67564-0.sysdata.xml
13. I have a Surface Rt which was a present. It has a problem with the HDMI socket which only connects if strained in one position. Have tried two cables but its the tablet that's wrong. I intend taking it back under guarantee but if they offer another tablet how can I get all my saved data from games and installations onto another device?. My kids have several games where they have worked for months to get to advanced scores. They certainly won't be happy to have to start again!. So how can I back up everything before taking it back to the shop?
14. I think I may have confused the people who are trying hard to help me. So to set the record straight - I hope ! 1) this all started because I could not see all my workgroup connected PCs from just this one PC 2) I read the advice about running sfc /scanow but needed administrator rights 3) I then tried the right click on the cmd.exe icon and found I had another issue - the problem with the right click on the cmd.exe icon is intermittent - sometimes I can do it but mostly I cant. 4) When I can do it I am able to run the sfc /scannnow command fine - but it never produces any errors. I have also tried this in safe mode but the behaviour is excatly the same 5) More often than not simply right clicking on the icon causes explorer to hang - I then have to shut it down explorer to continue. 6) So all in all I have managed to run the command about 5 times and nothing produced on any occasion to indicate a problem. I trust that makes things a bit clearer - and sorry for all the work this is causing.
15. Tried that now - I do get two options but the first is the normal one for which I normally can't right clisk on , the other is "command prompt" all in lower case goes to a black screen but refuses to accept the command - it gives this report "SFC is not recognised as an internal or external command"
16. Hi and thanks - Now I have run the command sucessfully twice -but no errors reported and the problem comes back almost straight away. It's a bit hit and miss whether or not I can do the right click on the command icon - most of the time it just hangs but occasionally it works and I can run as administator. It was exactly the same when I created andused another administrator account. Something deep and mysterious going on somthwhere!
17. Thanks for the suggestion - I have now tried that but the problem is exactly the same on the new administrtor account - as soon as I right click over the cmd.exe icon it hangs and then I have to close expolorer to be able to continue using the PC. Looks like a rebuld is going to be the only way forward!
18. Thanks for all that - I have now tried running the command twice - once in safe mode and then one more time from normal mode. It allowed me to do that just once then the next time it locked again - and even after re-booting it stalls as soon as I right click on the command. Nothng too impotant on the machine so a clean install is probably the way I will go when I can find a bit of time.
19. Further to last post - I tried running the command in safe mode and it ran - but found nothing. ALso tried therepair option but again nothing has changed. If I then go into W7 normally and select the CMD then right click on it the machine hangs.. Just like when I am using Explorer for some other things. None of the other machines exhibits this so I think I have to assume there may be a problem with the W7 install !!!! Maybe my original problem is only a sympton of another issue???
20. OK - tried this BUT although I am the administrator it comes up with a message saying "you miust be an administrator running a consol session" but I dont know what that means!!!! ALso when I tried to right click on the CMD icon - it just hangs
21. Sure - 1 -- First I had my hard disk from the machine with which I have been running XP from for several years. I left everything on the HDD so its completely up to date when running XP. 2 ---I then took the HDD out of the machine and installed a new higher capacity disk in its place. 3-- I then installed Widows 7 onto the new disk then activated it and waited for the system to update itself. 4 -- I then installed the old drive back into the machine but connected to the SATA 2 connector leaving the W7 disk alone on SATA 0. 5 -- I then ran EasyBCD and set it to regard W7 as the default (on drive C) and auto look for another drive with XP. 6 -- It found the old drive (which is now drive E) and then created a new header with options to load either of the operating systems 7 -- FInally, as I will want W7 most of the time I set it to auto start in W7 after 5 seconds. That's it really - it was so easy I wondered if it would really work - but it did.... and still does.
22. When I do that the screen just flashes for a microsecondd then back to normal - Is that how it is supposed to work? I has not fixed the problem as explorer still hangs sometimes.
23. Well I have now answered my own question - using two drives and using easyBCD I now have a machine which gives an option to boot to W7 or XP and both options work fine. But thanks to all you guys for sharing your thoughts which gave me confidnce to give it a go.
24. To add to the above post - I have now trues putting the XP disk on the second sata port and if I use setup to boot from that disk it boots to XP just fine. Its a bit of a bind having to do that so an option to load one or the other disks from an option on screen would be a whole lot better.
25. I've not installed anything apart from W7 and my antivirus which is exactly the same as for the rest of the W7 pcs on the same workgroup. What I have noticed however is that Windows Explorer (not Windows Internet Explorer) keeps stalling - so perhaps its something to do with that. If I exit explorer using the task manager and then let it reload, the missing PC often returns! Looks like I may have to do a full W7 reinstall as I don't know if I can reload or repair just the explorer part. Any views on that?
