I have tried using Firefox, Chrome, IE and Edge - all behave slightly differently but all exhibit similar problems on this particular site. Also all are slower then when running on the other machines. When I first loaded W10 they were fine - its as though I have a virus but I have checked many times and the machine seems clean. One thing that is different with this machine is it is connected to a printer and about the same time as all the browser problems started I also got problems with controlling the installed printer - e,g, it stopped doing multiple prints - I did try using the latest HP driver for the printer but that seems to have made matters worse as far as printer control is concerned - can't see how to uninstall the actual drivers though because if I uninstall the printer it simply connects itself up again with the same drivers.

Now found how to restart firefox in safe mode without addons - same problem though with this website - still not worked out how to try IE without addons
-
Also thinking - if this can't be sorted is it worth doing a clean install of Windows 10 - and if so how do I find the licence key? - I have downloaded the w10 iso file but the install was the free upgrade from Windows7 but when I look under "system" the w10 key is not displayed! I assume once I have the key it will do a clean install !

What an idiot I am - I gave the way people refer to the site not the actual url which is http://www.laymyhat.com/forum/ - very sorry. Anyway cant find how to start IE or Firefox in Windows 10 without addons - the instructions above don't seem to be appropriate - I simply cant seem to find the options being suggested! Just tried logging in to the same site an a near clone of this machine - and everything works fine - no delays and no stalled pages - uses the same PC type, same ram, router and OS...

Just to add this mainly happens on ne particular site but sometimes others are affected in a similar way or are very slow to load The site I have most problems with with on this PC is www.lmh.com/forums where the theads wont load when I click on the links. Other forums site behave normally most of the time. I have four identical PCs all now running W10 from W7 free upgrade -but on just one PC I am having a few issues. 1) when downloaing larger files, they start very fast then get slower and slower and almost stop - I have very healthy download speed yet this happnes all the time. 2) some web sites pages simply wont open - or if they do keep crashing out to a message similar to that shown below I have tried different browsers yet on this one PC these problems seem to persist. I have also run my antivirus checker and also Malwarebytes but nothing unoward found. Everything else seems fine. In fact using it now to post this..... Any clues please..??? The connection was reset The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Many thanks for that link - however that exactly what I want to do i.e. set for two sided then print, print the first side then turn the paper over then print the other - but is simply does not do that - it prints everything in one go! Maybe a new printer is the only answer - or keep an XP machine as a printer server!
-
have now tired using the hp universal print driver for PCL5 (The PCL one wont work at all) and it still wont do both sides - now at a loss as to what to do - didn't want to scrap a perfectly good printer for this issue. Its daft that something cant be done.
-
I have tried to do the above but the dialogue boxes for my printer don't seem to be anything like those shown on this thread. Moreover every time I connect the printer it installs as HP "LaserJet 1300 PCL5" and the results are always the same. The properties box shows that two sided printing is available and the settings have a checkbox which although seems to work - i.e. is active, then does nothing and the prints just spew through as normal one sided with no message to turn over the paper etc as normally happens. Its as though the double sided option has been by passed somehow. I tried downloading the latest universal print driver but the printer does not seem to connect to that - is there a way of forcing it to?
-
Thanks for that - however the link does not seem to go to a current page - I keep getting an error and page not found. Would love to follow this up if I can.
-
Having had virtually no issues at all in upgrading my 5 pcs to W10, I have today discovered a little issue which is really annoying. I have a LaserJet 1300 printer but now I can only print single sided. The duplex printing wont work at all no matter how I set up the finishing - all that happens is all the pages simply print out normal single sided. Any clues a to what is going on here? I tried reinstalling the printer using he W10 drivers on the HP website but it make no difference - the pages just spew out single sided.

Stero problem from soundcard (Resolved)

Thanks Nev - It think you are right and I should use USB headphones - they are cheap anyway and plenty good enough for what we are doing. I like the Plantronics sets anyway Thanks again. -

Stero problem from soundcard (Resolved)
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I had thought it could be due to impedance issues - I don't actually connect the low imp speakers to the rear but amplified speakers so the load impedence is pretty high - probably many times that of the headphones. I have looked at the device settings, it seem only the mic setting can be altered - however if I use a set of headpbines with a 4 connection jack inserad of the normal 3 I get the stereo back! -
I have a number of Dell 755s and 780s and all have the same sound issue. Each PC uses the onboard "soundmax" setup I run a small language school and up until recently have used the front sockets on these machines without problems for input and output to stereo headsets each fitted with a mic for students to use. However the pupils keep running their chairs over the headphone cables or knocking the plugs with their knees and we have lost several headsets so I decided to use the rear sockets instead so the cables are routed over the desktops and the plugs kept well away from the students. However when I do this the headphones then revert to mono and become quite noisy. If I connect the same sockets to traditional speakers the output then comes again in stereo!!! There is nothing wrong with the sockets or the headphones so why is this happening - ie only getting mono from the rear sockets. with headpnes but stereo with speakers!! Also I notice when using the rear sockets, the recordings from the mic are quite noisy. As a temp fix I have used some cheap USB converters in the rear USB ports and although they work pretty well without undue noise and with headphones they give stereo sound, I would rather have the sockets working properly - any ideas please??

The Printers are hanging off a 32 bit XP pro machine which acts as the network centre. All other machines on the workgroup are running 32 bit W7 pro. The printer most needed is a HP laserjet1300 but the HP website does not offer a driver to download. Will try the direct conneciton to see if I can get a driver to load or work.
-
I have a problem - I have a home netword with a few printers connected to a PC running a 32 bit OS - One of my PCs is a 64bit W7 machine and I cant seem to use my network printers from it although 3 other 32 bit machines work fine. I used the HP site to search for drivers for thie printers but all they suggest is loading the W7 driver but it wont do it.

Can't refresh webpage on Surface RT
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
5 Mine is also on automatic - I even tried other settings but no luck. Strange thing is I managed to force a refresh with Control F5 when using IE from the desktop and it updated the page fine but when I use the Google app or IE from the apps page and view the same page it is not updated! -
I have a Surface RT - I have been browsing a site but I know one page on it has changed but my Surface wont update the page - it always shows the old page. I have used the refresh key but to no avail. The page is fine on all other PCs and my ipad but on the surface it still shows the old page. I have deleted all history etc and rebooted but it stubbornly won't refresh. How can I force it to refresh a page?

Today when I came to use on of my W7 machines I noticed most of the desktop icons have little locks on them - no idea where they came form or why they are there. but woud like to get rid of them. None of my other W7 machnes on the same workgroup seem to be affected. All the icons seem to work OK ie the correct software load sup when I click them. Where do these little locks come from? and what do I do to get rid of them again???

New W7 PC can't see XP machines on workgroup
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Well I dont know what has happened but this morning when I booted up the PC - it is showing the XP machines - and yet I have done nothing to change anything!!!! Perhaps as I am in Spain it is following the Spanish tradition in that you have to wait ages for everything!!!! -
This is really frustrating. I have recentl upgraded most of my PCs to W7 but with thelast machine I am having problems. The machnie runs OK and connects to the internet via wireless fine and seesm to be working OK in every respect BUT when it is connected to the workgroup, it only sees the other W7 machines and not the XP ones, I have another identical machine which I also upgraded to W7 but thatone sees everything in the workgroup. I checked the network settings page and can't see any differences in the settings betwen the two machines so can't really figure out what is wrong. I also tried disconencting for the homwgroup but it makes no difference, and in any case the other W7 PCs all see everything. I tried shutting all the PCs down and restarting them but this latest PC still only sees the W7 machines and I cannot see the new machine from the XP machines, Any ideas please

Is this a virus issue or something else?
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Many thanks for that - but how do I know if my install is an OEM or other type? All I know it is W7 Ultimate 32bit and thanks to you people I now have the license code as well. I know the owner does not have the install disks any more and there is a recovery partition on the HDD but I suspect that it will have the original Vista OS on it and not W7 so will probably not be much use anyway. Not really sure why he needed to upgrade from Vista to W7 as the PC it quite lightly used and not in need of a very robust OS!. However if I do a rebuild it will be with W7 -

OK - I did run sfc/ scannow as administrator in elevated mode and it ran OK but reported nothing wrong. -
