  1. This may sound a bit odd but I have two near identical Dell PCs and want to swap them over - the issue is I want to transplant the HDDs from one machine into the other and visa versa and the reason for doing so is that the processor on one machine is only 2,2 ghz but the other is 3 ghz and I want the faster machine to take on the work being done currently by the slower one. With Balarc Advisor if am able to see the assigned serial numbers for the w10 installation for each machine and so was wondering if I simply swapped the HDDS then when I run up the PCS change the update the licence code on each to that which the machine held previously. The only other option seem to be a reinstall which I did not really want to do as one machine has loads of software installed and I don't want to change that. Or is there another way?
  2. Hi and thanks again - I checked the task manager and nothing shows there - the pcs are running normally and no slowing etc as indicated might happen and these PCs are older ones (pentium) so I would notice any speed impact very quickly. I have always have malwarebyes on all machine and run scans pretty often - but nothing found with that or with my Avira AV programme. Will keep an eye out though,
  3. I have a largish system in the house with several PCs and laptops connected either by lan or wifi. All are linked on a common workgroup All but one runs with W10pro 64bit and installation has been no problem. Three of my PCs are near identical - i.e all the same Dell model type although they have different speed processors However on one, due to a HDD issue, I have done a clean reinstall on a new HDD using the latest W10 iso and although installation seemed work fine I am now having two distinct issues which may or may not be related. 1) When using Edge my mouse becomes very jittery and won't respond properly 2) I can't connect to my router USB drive even though I can access the router admin just fine. I have tried to ensure all the networking options under sharing etc are set the same on the machine yet still the problem persists I can always see the router but not the router USB drive which does not appear as a drive There are really only two differences for this particular pc which are. a) the OS is in Spanish whereas all but one of the others are in English b) this Pc is running on 4gb Ram instead of 6 or 8 which the others have, Thinking there may be a hardware issue - I reinstalled W7 on another HDD to test the machine and it all works fine! - I can access the router USB drive easily and have no mouse jitter. Any ideas where to start looking most welcome
  4. After a long time we have been told by Orange that our speed issues were due to a microwave-link tower near where we live and owned by Movistar having been struck by lightning. Most if its kit was destroyed and so has had to be rebuilt almost from scratch which has taken a few months. There were many people in our area experiencing the same sorts of issues that we have had. At least now in December the issues appear to have been sorted and we now get new speeds of near 100MBPS up and down so at last I am happy with our setup. However we seem to have lost our 500mbps promotion but that's something we can take up with Orange later (I don't need that sort of speed anyway). My biggest gripe however, is that Orange knew of the issue when we signed up with them but said nothing! I don't even think the Orange sales staff knew about it and nor did the engineers who did our installation when obviously they should have!
  5. I have a router with a usb drive which seems to be vulnerable to malware - in the past I have had unsavoury links appear on it and recently I get a warning that photo.src is there and it gets deleted by Avira but after a time it reappears. It only seems to occur on the router USB drive and nowhere else on the connected PCs. Today I removed the USB drive from the router and reformatted it but should I be doing anything else?
  6. No we have a brand new socket - the fibre cable is also brand new to the street - only a month old and the feed from that to the property was only put in last week. The orange engineer then installed the internal fibre link from the master box just inside the property to the room where the router is - only about 5 metres away. Today the results have been variable to say the least. FIrst thing this morning I was able to get 500 up and down on my lapptop but by midday this was back to the old copper netword speeds again for downloads although the up speed is always much higher On one PC - an older Dell 755 the speeds never get much above 200 and I pit that down to the older network card but again the speeds cvary so much its almost impossible to belive its just an adapter fault..
  7. They did change the router in their investigations but that changed nothing - however I can't connect direct to the fibre box as the converter changes the fibre line to a lan type connection and so I have to use that. Anyway several tests today show speeds from near zero for download to about 100+ and upload from about 10 to 500 - depending the time the test was run. Also made sure nothing else was running on the network or even plugged in when testing. I did find one issue - one of my lan cables was damaged so I have replace that and the others are Cat.5e so should be fine - not very long anyway 3m being the longest.
  8. HELP PLEASE..... Up until earlier this week I have had internet via copper cable running at around 8-15MBPS which although not fast worked pretty well for downloads although uploading was normally only 0.5 to 1 mbps which made some work very slow. We run several pcs on from the Ethernet connetions and have had up to 4 connected at any one time but most not accessing the internet most of the time so all worked pretty well and our little network enabled file sharing etc to work really well. A part of a package offer, we have now had fibre installed through Orange with a supposed speed of 100mbps although there is a promotion where for a while we have 500mbps. The engineer installed the fibre and connected us up and straight away there were issues. According to the Ookla speed test I could only get download speeds about the same as I was having on the copper connection. The engineer came and went several times over the next three days and he too was having the same issue on his laptop. This morning a second engineer came and declared that it was all our fault – we had “too many PCs connected and the cookies were sapping all the line speed”. After much fiddling he “showed” us that there was a speed of 500mbps and indeed when I connected my laptop it was – but within 30 minutes of them leaving it was back to around 15 – 40. What is strange is that the up-speed is nearly always at least double the down-speed when it is running slow, occasionally going as high as 200 or more on the upload test. To try an eliminate the “too many pcs” issue and also “too many cookies” I have disabled the wifi and disconnected all the other pcs from the router and run the Ookla tests again many times over using a modern i5 laptop which has a very recent install of W10 and hardly anything installed (the same pc which recorded 500mbps earlier when the engineer was here) The results I now get are pitiful with download speeds as low as 15 mbps and rarely above 50. One final thing. We contracted to have fibre direct to the router but when the engineer came he said that was not possible as they are using Movistar’s fibre cable and so have to put a small box between the fibre point which then feeds the router via a wan socket Of course we are going to go back to Orange after the weekend to complain again but has anyone any idea what may be happening here? I have no faith in a so called engineer who seems to know nothing about bandwidth usage. My own suspicions are maybe a damaged fibre cable in the house – (it was hurriedly stapled to the wall by the engineer which I thought was a pretty crude way – could it be slightly crushed and would that that explain anything? or is there a more logical reason? I had thought of disconnecting the whole system and re-connecting it directly to the fibre entry point to the property thus eliminating the internal fibre run – the plugs seem to be the same so would that be possible or would I damage it? Hoping someone out the can make more sense of this than Orange seem to!
  9. I have a new (well new to me) Laptop running the latest W10 and all seems fine apart from one thing. Although I can access all my other PCs on my home network I can't access the laptop from any of the other PCs all on W10. I have set up a shared folder on the laptop and given share permissions for myself and "everyone" which is what I have on all the other PCs. From time to time one or other of the PCs seems to not show up under the network but by simply running its name (\\pcname) I can always then see it from any other computer. However if I try this to access the laptop it says I don't have permission and consult the administrator - but I am the administrator! I have checked the advanced networking options and have it set to private, discoverable, with file and printer sharing sharing and set for no passwords - which are the exact same settings on all the other PCs. But still cannot see it from any other PC. I am able to see and access any of the other pcs on my network from the laptop and can transfer files etc without any problem. Its just I cant do the same from any pc to the laptop!! I have also reset winsock as many posts seem to suggest that but to no avail - somehow I simply don't seem to have permission to access it. All the PCs are running with local accounts. Any suggestions please!!!!
  10. It seems this icon is not for the control panel as I thought but for the task host (whatever that is!) - but I stll cant stop it appearing every time I shut down.
  11. This is what I see - As far as I can tell everything is shut down before I ask it to close and I always get this message.
  12. Every time I shut down my PC running W10 64bit I get the message saying one item is still running - it appears to be the control panel from the little icon but I dont have it running. I normally ensure everything is shut down before I close down the PC but every time this one item still remains waiting to be shut down which means I can't simply leave the PC to shut as I have to wait and then confirm Why does it do this? and how do I stop it?.
  13. Thanks KenB - disabling the AV does not seem to do anything but I am not sure where to do the second thing you mention - is that on the router or the PC? If the router I would be surprised if it would make a difference as all the other PCs using the same AV and same workgroup connect fine to each other!
  14. Just done another check - I connected the PC by the Ethernet cable but that made no difference at all - In the meantime now I can't see any other of the PC on the network but it knows at least one of them is there as it saves files to it!!! Please can anyone explain what is happening here.
  15. Thanks Starbuck - even with file options showing hidden files and it having a drive letter there appears to be nothing in it but its size in explorer suggests at least a third of it is used! Anyway have now removed the drive letter and it now does not show so maybe its been there all the time!
  16. I meant to say the one with W10 home is the one with the issue - and also the only one using wifi to connect
  17. I have a small network around my property with 5 pc linked together connected by a workgroup. 3 run W10 64 bit pro - 1 runs W7 pro 64 bit and one runs W10 home 64 bit. On all but one PC everything works fine and I can "see" all my other pcs from any PC and also a drive connected to my router which is used as a mini server - i.e. it holds links etc for use by all the other PCs and acts as an emergency backup system. The W10 pc is not however able to see my router drive. (It does see the router but not the associated drives) It sees the other PCs but not the router drive and I cant figure out why this should be as some time ago it worked fine. There has been a rash of W10 updates and I'm not sure if those have affected anything. The only other things really different about the affected PC is that it generally connects via wi fi and not the lan but as it sees the other PCs I don't see why that should be the issue - and its in Spanish not English but again in the past that has never affected anything and also one of the other PCs is on a Spanish OS system and its fine!. Can anyone point me towards how to find out why the router seems not to appear ??
  18. Well it seems TalkTalk did come good in the end. After a reboot the PC now connects up fine to Teamviewer - its just a shame they don't warn people first so they can opt out of a restriction if they so wish before its implemented! Would save a lot of time and aggro!
  19. Thanks RichardT The machine concerned is using TalkTalk so I contacted their customer support but they simply did no understand the issue. They have unblocked the restrictions and say nothing is now blocked (which I could have done myself) but at the moment Teamviewer is still not working nor will the PC connect to their website. When I mentioned Teamviewer itself being blocked to the customer support they did not seem to understand the issue at all! Thanks Starbuck - I did see those issues on the web when trying to find a solution but the advice given does not seem to apply to the latest version of Avira - at least I cannot see how to include and exception as the menus described do not appear in the current version. I only recently updated Teamviewer but as I cant access their web I am unable to even download it again to try a reinstall. Funny thing is that all my other PCs use the same AV software and same edition of Teamviewer and they have no issues at all!
  20. But this was a clean install of W10 onto this machine W7 has never been on this HDD - I had install W10 afresh after a HD failure last year. However last week it did just appear - I had changed nothing. It was not visible a week ago although may have existed unseen - When the drive appeared it had a drive letter which is when it was noticed - as a result my backup process was trying to write to it!!!! Looking in the partition there are no files or folders which show up at all although the disk manager says it is not empty.
  21. On just on of my machines - a laptop running W10 64 bit home, a recent update has caused Teamviewer to stop connecting. It gives a message saying the antivirus (Avira Pro) is preventing a connection - this also happens if I try and access the Teamviewer website. Everything else appears to connect fine. All was well just a week ago and I was able to access this PC easily but then there was a W10 update and an Avira update and after that the issue started. Searching the web for a solution appears only to show solutions for older versions of software and I can find nothing relevant to our setup. We have the same AV software on several other machines and they are all working fine but they use W10 pro and not Home - is that a factor??? Not being able to access that particular machine is causing a real problem as its used by my aged mother and I need to access it to help her do things - she being in the UK and me being in Spain. Any ideas?
  22. My unchecking "show hidden files" in file options it has gone for now - but why did it suddenly appear? for months nothing then all of a sudden there it was and designated as my I: drive which was a real pain as I use that drive letter for my external drives for auto backups and so the system partition got swamped which is when I noticed it.-
  23. After installing the latest W10 updates I find I now have a new little partition on my C drive called - System Reserved. Never has such a thing before - or at least it has never showed up as a drive with a drive letter before. It is set at 99 mbytes with 65 mbytes free but there is nothing in it! How did it get there? Can it be safely removed? - I get dire warnings if I try and delete saying other things may well not then function.
  24. Hi Starbuck - music issues appears to be cured. At least I am getting total silence when browsing Ebay whether logged in or not on the offending machine. I don't use Chrome much but have removed the extensions anyway. Many thanks for all the help - much appreciated.
