How to use MSCONFIG: NetSquirrel.com Look to the bottom left of the welcome center, and uncheck the option to run at startup.

In most instances, you shouldn't need any drivers as a Vista reinstall contains such when installed from the original recovery disks or hidden partition. What is the make and model of the PC, and what exactly does it say on the Vista DVD you used to reinstall?

Good job. Get rid of all that crap and read this; http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/3597-free-pc-help-recommended-security-products.html

Well he's pretty close to having the computer up and running properly. To repair the final couple of problems should be fairly easy. I just get the feeling that Id has no idea what he's getting into for an installation of an operating system. Anyway, back in a few hours. -
I would first attempt hard drive error correction: Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer 1.Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. 2.Click Properties, and then click Tools. 3.Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed. 4.Select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start. Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer? Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

Your computer is very close to being clean, and my suggestion for the video driver solved the scrolling problem. The desktop problem can be easily fixed by using a certain repair utility in SAS. BTW-Go ahead and get the raid driver. Did you use the laptop to get SAS and install it on the desktop? Also, given how close you are to a full resolution, I think an XP install is not only overkill, but very precarious given that you have a custom built system. -
So yes, you do indeed have a dns problem. Try the Winsocks fix: WinSock XP Fix download and review - fix XP internet connectivity from SnapFiles If that doesn't work, pursue the solutions in the following link. The most important will be checking your dns settings; Fix your DNS problems

Hi Pete. There are days when I'm disinfecting up to 4 pc's in which the main culprit is a variant of AntiVirus 2009. Although MB is by far my second choice in scanners, I don't think it's as good as SAS. What I don't like about MB is the amount of benign registry files and traces it finds that SAS has deliberately left behind. That's why I've always stressed that it's important to know if what shows in the log is actually a threat. With that being said, I too now only rely on SAS and MB, but will scan with Eset's online scanner occasionaly.

Here are the drivers: MSI -- MICRO-STAR INT'L CO., LTD. Once you have the appropriate drivers installed, go back to device manager and check that no other devices have an exclamation or question mark beside them. Your motherboard has an onboard video connection, but do you know if you have a separate video card that's being used? -
Excellent. The fact that the sites are fine in Safe Mode, indicate that either your antivirus or firewall are blocking those sites. What do you use for each? Go into normal mode and disable one at a time, then test those sites.

Look at the back of the computer for a sticker that says the model number. If there isn't one, you have to use a program like Everest from MajorGeeks.com - Download Freeware and Shareware Computer Utilities. to identify the motherboard, then we can get the drivers. We would also need to know if your video card is a separate add in card, or part of the motherboard. In regards to SAS, you need to get that running as it's the most important scanner. (don't forget about posting it's log..lol). -

Well just save it to a USB stick or a cd, then install, update, and run it on the desktop. You're scrolling problem is probably due to the devices not being installed (no drivers). You can get the drivers from your computer manufactures site, or post the make and model of the pc and one of us will find the drivers for you. -

Are you able to download sas using the laptop? Check to make sure all drivers are installed by right clicking "My Computer", choose Mange, then Device Manager. Does any listing show an exclamation mark or question mark in front of it? -
You're welcome Geoff. Please feel free to post with any further issues.

You obviously enjoy playing online poker, and most poker sites are safe. The poker entries in your log only refer to "buttons" that appear in Internet Explorer which will bring up that particular poker site, or a poker program that is required for playing. If you're unsure of what poker site is safe, then use Mcafee's Site Advisor which will give you information about any particular site. -

Do whatever you need to do to run SAS, and again, I need to see its log. So you were able to update and run MalwareBytes? -

Problem is, most poker sites are ok. It's a matter of trying to find out which are. Mcafee's Site Advisor might be of assistance, but the log technically doesn't show any malware. -

Nothing in the log of any real significance, although I bet you got the infection from one of the poker sites. Try resetting IE7 on the desktop computer, then attempt to download sas. Also try getting it from Free Software Downloads and Reviews - Download.com 1.Open Internet Explorer 7. 2.Click Tools, and then click Internet Options. 3.Click the Advanced tab. 4.Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset. Have you been trying to download sas from both computers? You should be able to get it using one of them. When you do get it to run, go into its prefernces>scan logs, and please post the log. -

Oh I see. I shouldn't have posted that .exe as sas already needs to be installed for it to run. Thanks. -

What one in particular? As it may not work if sas is installed. -

Let's have a look at what's running on your PC (BTW-Can you get online now, and are you using IE6 or 7?) Please download the latest version of HijackThis from Trend Micro and click on Download Hijack This Installer and save it to your desktop. Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install HijackThis. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis . Click on Install. It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop. Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad. Include this log by copying and pasting in your next reply. Notes: Do not use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted. Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless, or required for your computer to run like it should. -

The mobo on the other computer would have to have a Sata connection in order to slave the drive. BTW-I would trust WD diagnostics in showing no files on the drive. Go ahead and try the repair install. Note that if the cd does not find a Window's installation to repair, then don't proceed. Good luck, but I don't think a repair will help as it seems like a mobo issue. -

Ok, get the Super and Malwarebytes scan done, then don't forget to update them and run them again (that is if they couldn't update). Don't worry about the desktop problems, as once the system is clean, we can use Super to repair those types of issues.
