Hi wv; There are a lot of useful tips and links at this page of the Gmail Help Center that might be of assistance. I've never used gmail or configured it but I'm familiar with OE and Windows mail if the above link does not supply you with the information you need.

We are currently experiencing difficulties as you have noticed. This is not normal and the owner is working hard to resolve this with the server. The lag time is sporadic and rare but rest assured this issue will be resolved.

Hi Rootman88; Welcome back. You will need to go to "Device Manager". Here is one method. Right click "My Computer". Click "Properties". Click "Device Manager". In "Device Manager" Double-click the device for which you want to restore the driver. Click the "Driver" tab and then click the "Roll Back Driver" button. You may have to reboot at this point. I also suggest that you look into and start a new thread on System Restore and why you don't have any older restore points. We may be able to offer some insight into this. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Vista / Windows Mail - cannot follow e-mail link
RandyL replied to 163richardb's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Actually Rich for that second part in the above you should also probably look at this. Go back to Choose the programs that Windows uses by default. Click on Make a file type or protocol(such as .mp3 or http://) always open in a specific program. Scroll down to the bottom. Under PROTOCOLS look at HTTP and HTTPS. If they do not say Internet Explorer under Current Defailt select them and click Change Program. -
Vista / Windows Mail - cannot follow e-mail link
RandyL replied to 163richardb's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Rich; Go to the Control Panel. On the left switch to Classic View. Click on Default Programs. Click on Control access to certain programs and set defaults for this computer. Select Custom and use the double down marks on the right to expand the menu. Choose a default web browser and a default email program. Click OK. Go back to Choose the programs that Windows uses by default. Click on Make a file type or protocol(such as .mp3 or http://) always open in a specific program. Scroll down to and select .url. Click Change Program. Expand the list and choose Internet Explorer if that is your browser. Click OK. See if it works now. -
Changing from outlook express 6 to Outlook express 7
RandyL replied to caskin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Congratulations caskin. That last bit of information you provided was just what kelly needed to get to your issue. Great job in giving that information. Thanks kelly for picking up on that. -
I think this topic is based on the things Microsoft does that makes almost no sense. New operating systems and we could add other software like Office too. Try running old software and hardware on Vista. Just get new everything for Vista. Bottom line is in my opinion Microsoft can't even make their own products compatable let alone anything else. As for it being better I would like to know why. It's harder to work with and can be customized less. Far less intuitive too if you ask me. Like I said there is much more different then you think. Try changing the System Restore size or how often it sets a point. Try dealing with the task schedular. It can be done but you really need to know your stuff. Not for average users. And I can go on. lol

That's a fact seth. No getting away from it. I miss that feature. And if there wasn't a password reset disk made then things get ugly fast. How many people would take time to make such a disk even if they knew it was an option? Look at how many people don't make the recovery disks. In my opinion there is plenty not to like about Vista. The stories I could tell you already. Add to that that most don't ship with a full Vista set of disks and it gets worse for repair options. Even if you had that option the Recovery Console is different.

In XP there was often times a generic Administrator login in safe mode. A good failsafe option if you ask me. At least you could do things like change other account passwords. In Vista this does not appear to exist. I'm thinking of making another Administrator account (with a password) if I choose to set a password for my current accounts. It never hurts to have more then one Administrator account. As my grandkid gets older I'll probably have to do this. Kids will be kids.

Hi; I assume you mean this is Outlook Express. You said she had no spyware programs. I take this to mean she had no antivirus program or antispyware programs installed. As such I would start with our malware removal proccess listed below as any single program may not remove everything and the ones we suggest are top notch. This is especially true if it took multiple attempts with your program to clean the computer. Another thing to consider is that "PC Tools Spy Doctor with Antivirus" is the culprit. It may have changed the settings in Outlook Express or is in itself blocking these functions. If that is the case then uninstalling it may fix the problems. Either way I would suggest using better Antivirus or antispyware programs. Try our malware removal proccess first. If the above doesn't help then you will have to go into Outlook Expresses "Options" and check to see if the settings are right. But first we need some more information. What are "recipes and stuff"? Are these email attachments? Can she send email or is it that she just can't reply to email? What version of Windows does she have? Is she using IE6 as the default browser? What mail does she use in Outlook Express? Your computer could still be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. Required Cleanup StepsDisable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean. For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below. From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range" click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware. http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/printer-selection.gif __________________________________________________ STEP 1 Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed)Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode" On the left hand side, Click on Tools Then click on the Resident Icon in the List Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts. Restart your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 2 Follow these instructions carefully. Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove un-needed temporary files from your computer that may contain malware. You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main. For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored Then click on "Empty Selected". http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner01.gif . http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner02.gif __________________________________________________ STEP 3 Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files. You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next. You can leave the automated check for updates on. You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information. DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button. Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives. Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so. __________________________________________________ STEP 4 Install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes - (direct download) Accept all defaults for the installer Allow the program to update the definitions Click on the Quick Scan and click Next. If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 5 Run an online scan with ESET from Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan. If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you must first start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select "Run as administrator" from the popup context menu. Accept the terms and click "Start". Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications". Click "Start" to begin the scan. When completed restart your computer __________________________________________________ Make sure your internet firewall security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted. If required this is the download link for TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Unless instructed to by the Technician helping you then do not download this tool. Once you and the Technician agree that your system appears to be clean then you should delete all your System Restore points and recreate a new one. Changing from outlook express 6 to Outlook express 7
RandyL replied to caskin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi caskin; If you can not recieve mail (but can send) I would look into the POP3 settings to see if they are correct. I've never used this version so I'll have to look up how to do it. Normally a persons ISP would gladly assist you in setting up your email client to work with their mail. In any case you would need the correct POP3 settings and maybe another setting. Do you get an error when trying to recieve your mail? Do you know what your POP3 settings should be? What is your ISP? What mail are you trying to get? Is it your ISP's mail account? Also check into Internet Options>Programs tab to make sure your email client is set to Outlook. OE and Outlook can reside side by side. OE is part of Windows and no attempt should be made to remove it. It could cause issues. -
What I'm saying dorsil is if you have turned off the security notification in Windows then Spybot would be reporting that fact. Also if you have disabled your AV then Spybot could be reporting that too. You do not need to disable those before running Spybot.

Changing from outlook express 6 to Outlook express 7
RandyL replied to caskin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi caskin; Outlook 2007 is part of Microsofts Office 2007. The latest version of Office. When you installed Microsoft Office from the CD what options did you choose for Email? -
Hi dorsil; Have you turned off or disabled your antivirus? Have you turned off the Windows notification that one or more of your security functions are not detected? I turned off the notification because Windows did not recognize my security software even though it is legit and working. Spybot appears to be picking up that you have overridden the settings.

Hi AS. Are you looking for the direct download link for the Recovery Console ISO that we have used before?

Office 2000 Pro. It had major compatability issues with Vista. I could work around some but not nearly all. -

Text is best right pete. Imagine my horror when I couldn't open my Office files after getting Vista. My version of Office won't work on Vista. I'm not making that mistake again. Thankfully in my case Open Office saved me this time. Some but not all would open with Word Pad or Works. -
Hi; Have a quick look here. It seems to be a compromise instead of two different cards. As for how good it is we can't tell without knowing more.

Thanks for understanding shrimply. But trust me. XP pro costs hundreds of dollars. U.S. You can't install it for free legally. One copy and one price for home users. I'll close this thread now as is our policy.
-
I'm sorry shrimply but it is not legit. The business may have a license for multiple installations but only for that company and only for the amount licensed. Microsoft has different plans for their products. What your friend has done is illegally installed XP Pro on that computer via a corporate license. It is a common form of circumventing Microsofts policies and is highly illegal. Many such holders of this violate the intent and use it to install it on other systems whether it is for profit or for free. If it were legally obtained and installed it would have cost some serious money. I know you and know you did not participate knowingly but our policy is we can not help you as this software/OS is is not legally obtained and/or installed. Sorry. RandyL
