Hi Johnny; The usual causes are malware like viruses, trojans, spyware and adware. Of course it is possible it's something else. Do you have an updated antiviruses program and antispyware program? If so which ones. I assume you're running Windows XP. Many downloaded programs come bundled with such malicious software. Screensavers and some games come to mind but there are others such as some file sharing programs. "Should you restore?'" That depends on a lot of things. Let us know a littlle more as requested. I can't say what your issues were or how you resolved them. You didn't supply enough information. Either way I fail to see how this post is relevant to the original posters query. Hi everyone; The Norton Removal Tool might expunge the registry keys needed to correct this. Be warned though it's usually best to run it on failed uninstallations only. I personally have seen the tool corrupt other things. Uninstalling Norton can be tricky and has to be done in the correct order as even the basic antivirus program has two entries in add/remove. Even if it does work there might be a problem with the online registration if the key is in use. Not sure though. I have found Norton to be most helpful with these kind of issues. Hi azza11; Please don't re-install Windows. That won't help and I would hate to see you go through all that for nothing. Can you provide just a little more information to help? Make and model of computer. Vista or XP I assume. Can you provide details on that. Make and model of the digital cameras. Can you see the devices in My Computer? Have you tried a different USB port? Hi Jamie; The first link above if you scroll down explains it. See "Clean Install". You will have to backup your data. You could use Windows Easy Transfer to do this. Keep in mind that some software and hardware may not run on Vista even if it did on XP. RandyL

Hi People; I believe in Vista you have to set your auto play choices from the control panel. Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Autoplay. If Control Panel is in classic view just open AutoPlay. Of course that won't help if you can't use the drive. As Wolfey said you have to look quick to see the options at the POST screen. Some computers have different options to enter safemode as well as the BIOS. What make and model is your computer? If it's a Samsung or NEC the options to enter safemode may be different. You could try holding down the ctrl key at bootup. RandyL

If you couldn't boot from your old drive it may have been failing. Not a good sign. Data may be lost. Have you tried a hard drive test on it? RandyL

Hi neon; The recommended memory for your software is 1 GB and that's probably not enough. They tend to low ball the figures. Your system will support much higher. Your processor is 1.8 GHz which barely meets the minimum and is nowhere near the recommended. And if your system has too many programs running at startup this would also use resources. In my opinion your system isn't up to it. Even with more memory and the driver update your processor is on the weak side for this. RandyL
