Hi literarytony; Sounds like your display adapter drivers are corrupted. Look in Device Manager for a yellow exclamation mark. That usually means the drivers need to be reinstalled. Either way I would try reinstalling the drivers. Right click My Computer-Click Properties-Click Device Manager-Click on the + sign next to Display Adapter. See anything? Since you only have 16 colors as an option that probably means the drivers are corrupted and Windows has to use a generic set. Post back if you need help reinstalling the drivers; RandyL

Try a cleaner disk. Or it might be a misaligned lasar lens. Or a bad cd drive. Check the cables. Update the drivers. Enable DMA in the device manager if it isn't already. Just a guess. A few have reported problems when nero/incd is installed. Try disabling if you have it. That's all the guesses I have; RandyL

Depending on the manufacturer the beep codes can mean different things. Also the lengths of the beeps would help. Short or long or any combination. It would also help to know the EXACT make and model of your computer. Without more information I can I only make a guess but most likely your motherboard is bad.

Hi MsSkillz; Most likely a flash player issue or an activex security setting on your computer. Try installing flash and shockwave flash from Macromedia. A slow dialup connection could also be causing a very long delay. We can't help you more without knowing more, What operating system? What make/model of computer? What security programs? etc. Any P2P/peer to peer/file sharing programs installed? These are relevant questions; RandyL

Taken from the AT&T page; Note: AT&T Worldnet Service does not provide antivirus programs for download. What they appear to offer is email virus scan only. Other security features from AT&T also appear limited in scope. So I suggest that you prepare to do a thorough cleaning and get better security programs. To start with I would install and update an antivurus program. Then run a FULL system scan. If money is a problem try AVG from Grisoft. They have a free version. Next run spyware and adware removal programs. You said you ran CCleaner from Microsoft to clean the registry. CCleaner is not a registry cleaner and is not from Microsoft. It is however a spyware and adware removal program. But I also suggest using Adaware and Spybot. Update them after installing. Then do a COMPLETE system scan. Spybot and Adaware SE Personal are free. Next I would do an online scan for viruses and pests. My personal favorite is Housecall from Trend-Micro. This online scan is free also. If you're lucky this will disinfect your system. Sometimes though these programs need to be run from safe mode. And this could just be the start. NOTE: If you have programs installed on your computer that come bundled with spyware or adware those programs need to be uninstalled first. Otherwise they will reinstall the same crapware after you remove it. Just a few suggestions. Worth a try. It's what I always do first when cleaning a system. Let us know how it goes; RandyL

Hi youngy ; Possibly an intermittently failing modem. I've seen it before. Possibly a problem with your Provider. Check with them. But since you state your modem is hooked up via USB ports you might want to try one one or two other things. If you have more then one USB port try connecting your modem to one or more of the other hubs. Whether or not that works you could also try going into the Device Manager and removing the USB Root Hubs. Restart your computer and it should reinstall them on bootup. This often times works. Hi ksw63129; What version of Windows are you using? What service packs (SP) have you updated to? Exactly what "type" of windows are opening? Exactly what "windows" are they? Exactly which antvirus, spyware and registry cleaning programs were used? Are you using any P2P-Peer to Peer-file downloading programs? Free music or games etc. type programs? I suspect it might be the Windows Messenger if you haven't updated Windows which will turn it off. I also suspect spyware/adware/ malware/crapware if you are into so called "free stuff". If that is the case then you must "attempt" to uninstall those programs first. Then run reliable cleaner programs. If you have these nasties it may take some effort to remove them but it is possible. But the original offending programs must be removed first. Without more information it is impossible to guess the source of your problem though. Let alone the solution. Post back please; RandyL

Hi Barry; Off hand I haven't a clue. But You have an excellent post. Great info and good steps you have taken. And you summed it up so nicely. Your post is an inspiration. Hi ylind; It might be slightly different on XP but try my ME steps. Go to your Control Panel. Click Add/Remove Programs. Click the Windows Setup tab. Make sure Accessories is checked. Click to highlight Acessories. Click Details. Check Imaging. Click OK. Click OK. You might need to restart your computer. You might need a recovery/restore or install disk. Probably not though. An XIF file type is most likely related to Scansoft products. I use them myself. As such Imaging may still be installed. But the program to open them may have been changed. Try right clicking a file and choose an open with option. Make sure Always Open With is not checked until your sure. See if Imaging is an option. Just a few guesses but worth a try. KM266-8235 appears to be the motherboard. Several manufacturers use it so it's hard to say what you have for audio devices. System Model: Micro-Star International Co. Ltd All I could find from them appears to be laptops. Not much help there. Modem #2 Line Recorder, Modem #2 Line Playback and Unimodem Half Duplex Device appears to be modem data. Likely for recording phone calls on the PC. Please look again for audio/sound devices. I think you're looking in the wrong area. RandyL

You might also want to try the microsoft update site. I think you might have this for audio. jb1122; Download these two free diagnostic programs. They may be able to tell you what you need to know. PC Wizard. Click on the Multimedia icon on the left under the Hardware tab. Click Audio Record and Audio Playback. Look at the General information area. http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php Belarc Advisor. Look under Multimedia. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html Then it's a matter of searching for the drivers once we know what we're looking for. RandyL

Hi jb1122; You probably need to update your audio drivers to work with XP. Hopefully your system will allow it. Please post on this site the exact make and model of your computer. You may also need to run a third party utility to figure out what drivers you need after the update to XP. The leap from Windows 95 or 98 to XP is a big one. There may or may not be compatibale drivers. Driver issues can sometimes be a real pain. Like I said you probably need updated audio drivers to deal with your updated operating system. Post here because this can sometimes be difficult and you may need all the help you can get. RandyL

If so mine is unticked too. I don't have the "Use Available connection" but then again I just have a dialup account. I'm not configured for ADSL like you. Hello again: Thanks for the additional information. I think it does help narrow down the issue but I don't think I can help you with it. The mere fact that out of the blue I asked if you used ETrust Firewall and you said yes leads me to believe that is indeed the problem. As I said before, not being able to log on to some forum sites with this firewall seems to be a problem. Obviously not a problem with this forum site though. You said that you "TRIED TO DISABLE" the firewall. Did you disable it? Or did you just hide the system tray icon? I don't use ETrust firewall but have checked out their settings from their very poor support pages. The one single person that replied to my emails and forum posts reported back that disabling the firewall fixed the problem. I still think the firewall may be the problem but it is possible it is some other program. But since I can't sit down at your computer I can only guess. Since I suspect a problem between eztrust and the forum you are trying to access I would deal with them directly. I know you said you dealt with the forum techs already but did you tell them you used the ETrust Firewall? You could also try using the Live Chat with Tech Support (Free!) for your firewall. http://home3.ca.com/Support/TechSupport.aspx As a last resort for trouble shooting you could try disabling or uninstalling all security programs (antivirus, firewall, popup blockers, host files, active x blockers, etc). Then try to access the site. If you can access it then one by one reinstall the programs untill you come accross a problem. This last step is an extreme draconian measure which could leave you temporarily extremely vulnerable. In closing I still suspect your firewall but I could be completely wrong. Hi everyone; I'm not sure what I can offer but it might help others to know just a few things first. The information you supplied so far is good but a little more might help. Are you using Windows XP? XP has a built in firewall that might be causing a problem. Do you have another firewall installed? I have seen this problem before with other third party firewalls. ETrust comes to mind as of late. Once it was disabled logon problems were solved. It did have settings for cookies and sessions cookies. Are you using Internet Explorer 6 as a web browser? Are you using a cookie manager? This would save some cookies even if you chose to delete from IE Options. If you use IE and MANUALLY deleted cookies AND temporary internet files did you also delete all Off Line content when prompted? Have you checked your security settings in IE? Make sure your settings are not set to high. That is make sure cookies are allowed at an appropiate level. Do not confuse Clear History at shutdown with delete cookies. They are not the same thing. Delete cookies and temporary internet files as well as Off Line content manually from within IE options. Santa is right. Start with the basics. Properly delete content first. Then check all of the IE settings. Then consider other program settings. Antivirus Suites. Firewalls. Cookie managers. etc. Post back with more detailed info on what you have tried and what other programs you have installed. If you need more info on how to perform steps perhaps we can also help you with that too. Eventually though it my be a problem with the site server. That we can't help you with. But there is much more to try first. RandyL -

Sorry davidofleigh that it didn't work. I have seen a few instances where Microsoft products were buggy so you could you try this. First off, Did you click Apply, OK, etc. Next try this. Check the option. Apply, OK, etc. Uncheck the option. Apply, OK, etc. reboot after each setting change before you change again. -

Hi davidofleigh; You may be right. This might be easy. Open OE. Click Tools on the toolbar. Click Options. Click on the Connection tab. Uncheck Hang up after sending and recieving. Click Apply. Click OK. Since you're on DSL always on internet connection this may be the setting causing the problem. RandyL
