  1. You did the right thing by getting the Windows 10 drivers direct from HP. Nice printer by the way. This wouldn't be the first time that drivers for HP printers left out some functionally for older printers on newer Operating systems. However I did find a support page that may offer some insight on changing settings manually that looks like it may address your problem. Pay close attention to steps 1-4 but steps 5 and 6 might resolve your issue. The support page is very detailed and includes pictures. http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=238320&docId=emr_na-c02005997&docLocale=en_US
  2. Hi Richard. To the helpers on this thread: Could a AV suite be blocking Windows updates? Just curious. Could a previous infection changed something? Richard what protection do you have? Have you recently been infected?
  3. As a temporary measure I applied some silicone adhesive to the seal. That might give me ten more years at least. 26 years is a long time Ken. What brand is it? As we all know heat is one of the biggest killers of computers. Maybe computer manufacturers should consider fans made out of metal instead of plastic. Maybe even Freon based cooling systems instead of air cooled or water cooled. For that matter make a desktop slightly larger at the same time and it could double as a beer cooler. :) Computers are cool. Freon is cool. Beer should always be cool.
  4. I'm glad you figured it out. Thanks for letting us know what it was.
  5. I confess to know nothing about Windows 10 and file sharing. However since everything worked when all the computers had Windows 7 I'm wondering if you have this setup as Home Group or Work Group. I don't know about Windows 10 but when networking other Windows versions that are not the same versions Home Group does not work. Different versions of Windows had to be in Work Group. I currently have Vista, 7 and 8 networked in the Work Group but I don't have a 10 machine.
  6. Unbelievable. I have a perfectly good refrigerator that I can't find parts for even in this age of internet where I can search the world. A while back a good friend crafted a replacement handle out of brass and steel but now I have a rubber door seal that is splitting and I can't find a replacement seal anywhere. It's amazing that in this day and age of computers and the internet and technology that there is nothing that can help me that I can find. This is a serious issue as this is the refrigerator that holds all my beer. It's a great refrigerator otherwise. After all it's still working after 68 years. I think it might have many years left. I guess if I can't find a seal for my 1947 International Harvester refrigerator I'll just have to replace it with an exact duplicate that I have in the garage but it has a broken handle too. I'll have to swap that with my hand crafted handle. That's right I have 2 working International Harvester refrigerators built in 1947. It's too bad I can't keep a computer working that long. :):):):)
  7. Try doing a search for common picture file types like .jpeg .jpg .bmp etc. Make sure to put the period in front.
  8. I don't have Sky Yahoo mail but I do have a Yahoo account. There is an advert in the Yahoo mail folders such as the inbox. It's at the top of the emails list and looks like a email but it is not. The only way to get rid of it is to delete or move every single email from the inbox. Of course as soon as you get new mail it will be back. You could switch to the Basic Yahoo mail view to get rid of it but Basic really is basic. Place your pointer over the gear next to your name. Click settings. In the "Viewing email" section tic "Basic". Click Save.
  9. Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 My wife's laptop is Windows 8.1 and a recent build so I can upgrade it with no problems. I managed to configure it so we would never have to deal with all the forced crap and tiled apps and also setup shortcuts so I can access all the functions of the OS without the convoluted steps to do so. However my wife loved the Windows 7 solitaire game which is not included in 8.1. By un-hiding files on 7 and 8.1 and copying as well as editing the registry and applying a patch (which anti-virus programs flag as a threat) I was able to install the old Microsoft games for her. The patch is no longer available from the link but I have a saved copy. If I upgrade to 10 I don't know if I can do this again. So Microsoft by not including the game software as well as taking away other things leaves me to not only be hesitant to upgrade they have gave me a great incentive not to upgrade. I have to keep the wife happy. :) Windows 7 to Windows 10 I have this on my desktop and it's fantastic. So the only reason I have to upgrade is the life cycle support. Based on the difference of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 I doubt Windows 10 can compare to Windows 7. I suppose I will also lose old software that I like including my pre-installed now discontinued Microsoft Works which includes an offline calendar. I will probably lose my Microsoft games like Solitaire too. I did run the Microsoft upgrade advisor and it mostly checked out as OK however according to a check by this ZDNet article the processor should support PAE, NX, and SSE2 which my early build of Windows 7 does not. even though it is good processor. Windows 10 updates This is a huge issue with me. Since Windows 98 to now I have seen huge issues with faulty updates from Microsoft. As such I have always installed them manually one at a time and even then only after creating a restore point and having created a rescue disk in case Windows won't boot. This being done at a time of my choosing. Windows 10 will not only install Windows updates automatically whether you like it or not at a time of their choosing but as I understand it they will also install certain third party updates such as driver updates which may install more then you choose if you went to the software site. Drivers in my personal opinion should not be updated unless needed as it may be problematic. This article from Microsoft may be of some assistance in side stepping automatic updates but I offer no guarantee. Conclusion I doubt an upgrade for my Windows 7 is an option and I doubt I would want to upgrade. I could upgrade my Windows 8.1 but is it worth it? I would probably lose much. Software, games etc. More importantly I would lose control of updates. I would also have to reconfigure Windows 10 to turn off what is in my opinion Microsoft spyware or privacy settings. It seems to me Microsoft could do better if they want people to migrate willingly.
  10. If Windows Updates is set to Automatic it will install the update again unless you Hide that particular update.
  11. Here is my opinion on what might be happening. First of all the AppData folder is a hidden folder. Digital River is a software vendor that distributes software for other companies. Mcafee is one company that used to partner with them. I think you are correct that this is the result of a poorly written uninstall for some piece of software. There is probably some leftovers that did not uninstall properly and at startup the registry wants to load an item from the folder location that no longer exists. It may be possible to delete the offending startup registry key but this can not only be dangerous unless you are highly skilled with the registry but it may be impossible to locate even with a registry search. I do not recommend this option. One thing I might suggest is a System Restore to before you uninstalled programs. You could then make manual restore points before you uninstall individual programs one at a time then reboot after each uninstall. Once you discover the error again restore to the previous point. If you find the offending program there may be a better way to uninstall it clean.
  12. Hi and welcome to Freepchelp; Although this may just be a glitch other things have to be considered first. What is the model number of your Sony Vaio laptop? Where did you buy it? Have you contacted Sony? It needs to be determined if this particular model came pre-installed with Windows from Sony or if this is a volume or trial license installed by the seller and not Sony. If it is a trial or volume license then it may have an illegal installation. What did Microsoft say when you contacted the Microsoft helpline? To see your version of Windows and more information press the windows key and r on your keyboard to bring up the run command. Type msinfo32 and click OK. To copy the information click edit then select all then copy. You can save it or paste it here. Living with it is not an option as you might have a crippled operating system. If you have experienced this since you bought it or it started happening after 30 days then you might want to consider a full refund from the seller because it is a faulty system covered under warranty or something illegal may be the cause. Some sellers will do this to save money. Circumventing Microsoft Licensing rules is not something most people will help with but it could be a glitch that Microsoft or Sony can help with. Either way if this started from the date of purchase or around 30 days from then the seller should take care of it via a refund or I would suspect them of illegal activity. If you could supply some answers to our questions and supply the system info from the run command we may be able to give you some ideas.
  13. Hi Roy; It's been a long time since I used Mcafee and there are many versions but since no one else has posted yet I will. Some antivirus programs want to do a scan before the final install to avoid viruses that know how to interfere with an installed antivirus program. Even though your used drive space is small it can still take a long time to do a full system scan. Try letting the scan run over night. I have waited 6 hours depending on the AV and type of scan but depending on the AV, used drive space and type of files to scan it could be more or less. An hour is very little time. Since this is Windows 8.1 you could turn Windows Defender back on for now which is a full AV that comes with Windows 8. It's better than nothing and better than some. Keep in mind that if Mcafee does install it will disable the built in Windows 8, Windows Defender so if you uninstall Mcafee you may need to turn Windows Defender back on. Our security experts will know more.
  14. Hi Jim; Are you sure it's the drive making the noise? I've heard dirty or failing cooling fans make strange noises such as a whirring, screeching or whistling type of sound. I had one desktop brand where the fan was fine but ran fast at boot up which created noise. Laptop fans can run faster under a load but throttle down when idle to conserve battery power. So I was just wondering if it was a possible fan issue versus a drive issue.
  15. I was just wondering if you are removing the card properly. Do you use the "safely remove hardware"? Have you tried turning off the computer before removing the card?
  16. Hi mij; Disk drives do fail so that may be the problem. I had a CD drive once that started to fail and had trouble reading disks. It seemed to have the most trouble reading music CD's for some reason. It is strange that both DVD's and CD's are experiencing issues at the same time. Would it be possible to try your wife's combo drive in your computer? If that works then it would confirm that it is a faulty drive.
  17. Happy belated birthday Nev. I just now realized you had a birthday Tuesday.
  18. Just announced today: It appears Microsoft is releasing an Xbox 360 emulator this fall. Eventually you should be able to play hundreds of Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One although there may only be a hundred at first. What timing. We just bought an Xbox One for my grandson today. :) http://www.theverge.com/2015/6/15/8785955/microsoft-xbox-one-xbox-360-emulator-software
  19. FOR SEEDY21 ONLY: Sorry for butting in. I was just wondering about a couple things that may or may not be relevant. In the past I have seen slow page loading issues on some but not all computers running Internet Explorer 11 on Windows Vista. Perhaps trying Firefox or reverting to Internet Explorer 10 may shed some light. I saw some errors relating to Trusteer Rapport. If this was or still is installed maybe it's related. You mentioned that MS Word was slow to open. Are other programs slow to open? Does it take quite some time to boot up? You don't have a fast processor or a lot of RAM but it should be enough. If RAM or the hard drive is failing it can cause some slow issues. Since this is a HP computer it may have built in hardware diagnostics that you can run. Please do not make any changes unless instructed to do so by seedy21.
  20. Try these links. They are USA links but maybe you will get redirected. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=281820 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/what-is-trusted-device?woldogcb=0 https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage
  21. Hi Bringe. Try this. Type something in Notepad. Give it a name and save it somewhere. Now delete the saved Notepad file. Right click the Recycle bin icon and click Empty Recycle bin. This was a known issue on older Windows versions. The items were deleted but for some reason they appear to still be there but can't be seen. The above step should resolve the confusion.
  22. I might have some minor insight into this due to the fact I have a Live ID that is associated with an Xbox Live Gold membership and I participate in the Bings Rewards Program. Since financial information is tied to these and my grandson changed the settings when he forgot his password I had to investigate a bit. The first thing to do is check or change your account settings. Sign in to your Live ID mail such as Hotmail or outlook.com. Click on your account name at top right and then click "Account settings". Scroll down and under "Security & privacy" click on "Manage advanced security". From here you can add, remove or change your options. Also scroll down to the "Trusted devices" section and follow the instructions there. Trusted devices: FAQ If you delete your cookies on your computer that may remove it from trusted devices though. I just use a secondary email address as a backup as I don't have a mobile device. I know I have not answered your question exactly but I hope I pointed you in the right direction.
  23. Hi Ray; I found this document that may help. https://support.office.com/en-sg/article/Set-or-rename-a-default-working-folder-5a1be493-67c5-44fe-adfb-877453cf4d3b?ui=en-US&rs=en-SG&ad=SG Here is what it says. Click the Microsoft Office Button Office button image, and then click Word Options. Click Save. Under Save documents, next to the Default file location box, click Browse. Browse to the new default working folder, and then click OK.
  24. Hi Ray. Are you thinking of Adblock Plus? Check out these two links. One is for IE and one is for FireFox. https://adblockplus.org/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/
  25. You are right Ray. Windows Defender which comes preinstalled on Windows 8 or 8.1 is a full AV and antispyware program. I am using Windows Defender and MSE and have no issues. The security guys may suggest a couple others though.
