  1. The HP LaserJet 1300 and 1300n show drivers on the U.S.A. site. Have you tried those? http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/swdHome/?cc=us&cc=us&lang=en&lang=en&sp4ts.oid=238322&ac.admitted=1386142761136.876444892.492883150 http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_pagetype=s-002&h_lang=en&h_cc=us&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&cc=us&h_product=238328 http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/swdHome/?cc=us&cc=us&lang=en&lang=en&sp4ts.oid=238328&ac.admitted=1386143197528.876444892.199480143 Make sure the printer is not connected when you start the installation.
  2. Not to be an advocate for Microsoft but there is also the issue of the cost of supporting multiple and old operating systems. The fixes for every OS are different so they have to investigate and write code for each one individually. I always look at the updates and find a different fix for every OS, Service pack, IE version, Microsoft software. etc. For one update there is a huge list of fixes. But I agree one one thing. XP is used by a huge amount of individuals and businesses and worked well. Microsoft will save money but the overall cost to everyone else will be huge.
  3. Hi seaspray. Please don't try to manually delete program files unless you are absolutely positive you know what you are doing. IE is integrated into the Windows operating system so it's not wise to attemp to uninstall or delete the installed files. Can you elaborate on this further? What were the files and what was the name of the company? Have you tried uninstalling the toolbar?
  4. Hi Woodworker. Some programs will display a border. Windows Live Photo Gallery is one such program. The picture itself does not have a border it's just the program that opens the picture that adds a border to the display. If you open the picture in a different program that doesn't display borders you should see it display correctly. What picture viewer are you using?
  5. I'm back. I learned an amazing amount of things from you Starbuck so your work was not in vain. Actually it has benifited me greatly in other unexpected ways. I'll explain. The owner of the PC decided not to risk $70 to buy new RAM so she bought a new all-in-one HP instead. Not only did she not want the PC back she also gave me her huge HP glossy screen monitor with built in speakers. What a great deal. She hasn't found the recovery disks I made for her yet but I did use the HP recovery partition to reinstall Windows. All that crap that her grandkids did (Limewire included which I had removed once before) is gone as well as the malware and system changes. Now that the system is clean I can boot 10 out of 10 times without blue screens but do have to choose "to start windows normally" 1 out of 10 times. And this is with both sticks of RAM installed. This is great. Faults are now "bad pool header" or "irq more or less not equal" With both RAM modules now installed on a clean system and far less boot problems and with those errors and no others it is safe to assume that the memory slots on the motherboard are fine. It has to be failing RAM so new memory would almost surely solve the final issue should I choose to purchase it now or later for a secondary system. As for reinstalling Windows should I need disks I made an ISO for Vista using the Digital River files. It was a real pain as it is not as simple as it is for Windows 7. Of course I would still need the drivers for the hardware but can always do that easy enough. I also made a new startup repair disk (R.E.) as I found an old ISO file in my archives. Sooner or later I know I have to buy that memory. I should put it on my Christmas list. Then I will have a fully functional Vista machine I hope. Even if I do not I have a fantastic new monitor. Mark this one as solved my friend.I'm well on the path here thanks to you.
  6. Glad to hear that Ron. Hopefully it won't happen again after you update again.
  7. Hi Ron. Was this Adobe Reader? It sounds like a file association issue. Right click a file and choose "open with". Find the program that should open the file and select "always use" to set the default program for opening it. Also a System Restore will change the file associations back to before the update.
  8. Hi nick. Have you tried uninstalling the printer and reinstalling? If not I suggest trying that. Download the latest software instead of using the CD and follow these instructions. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02283843&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en#N175 For troubleshooting and uninstalling look here. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-topics/printer-installation/printer-usb-troubleshooting.html
  9. Remember Betamax the first ever device to record or watch TV that was replaced by VHS? It was quickly followed by the rise of video rental stores everywhere. There were the big name stores and mom and pop stores everywhere. Then the stores started offering DVD rentals as the medium changed. You could even rent games at the big stores. But just like drive-in movie theaters the stores started closing as people chose other options like on-line streaming instead. First the mom and pop stores closed then the big box rental stores started to shut down. Change is the way of the world. My grandson is too young to have experienced the drive-ins like I did but at least he was able to get the joy of walking into a store and browsing thousands of titles and if needed a personal shopping assistant. Also included was pop corn, candy, drinks and posters. Almost like a real movie theater but without the extremely high prices. He has taken great joy from these excursions and at great prices. Only 6 blocks from my house I could rent movies from $1.00 to $5.00. I could keep the one dollar movies for 5 days. The newest releases for 2 days. And with all the sights, smell and sounds. My grandson loved this experience even though he is a tech boy. But alas this is to end as the very last video rental store in my city and probably the USA is closing. From now on he will only know video rentals as an on-line streaming experience or mail-to experience which is just not quite the same or quite as cheap. Bockbuster Video is shutting it's doors. No more stores and no more mail-to videos. Only it's streaming movies will remain but I wonder for how long. It's a shame because it was a good experince and my store was doing well but the business as a whole was not doing well. And now we have none. So doing what I have to do I'm getting a WD TV Live Streaming Media Player box so I can rent streaming movies on my TV. It has 30 apps that I can use on my non-internet ready high def TV. More money and higher price movies but what is a person to do? As for older movies that my grandson likes I signed up for Netflix but after doing the costs for both I personally will spend more and all this without the better experience. Change may be inevitable but it is not always better. The end of yet another era.
  10. If it happens again Ken try using taskmanager. It might be in Processes.
  11. Just a guess but it could be Windows or program updates. If Windows updates is set to download but not install then they would be sitting there waiting for you to start the install. If Windows updates is set to download and install automatically then look in Programs and features. Select View installed updates and look at the dates they were installed. Programs such as an antivirus, Java, Flash, Adobe Reader and more could also be set up to update automatically. You can also look at those.
  12. Hi Loof. Did you get the drivers from here? http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/VGC-M1/updates Make sure you select XP. Scroll down to Preinstalled Drivers and Utilities first and select Original Drivers Package Download and SAVE the file. Onced saved right click and select Extract all. (It's a zip file) Open the new folder. Open the drivers folder. Inside those folders most of them will have a setup/application or install/application file you can double click.
  13. The latest ransomware here in Nebraska comes as an attachment in the emails so be very wary of those. A few businesses had to actually resort to a backup as the only solution according to KLKN TV news.
  14. Hi Malcom. The forum only displays 20 threads per page. At the top and bottom of the page you can change to a different page.
  15. We could check to see if you have the right drivers and there is a diagnostic utility at the HP site. Another quick look and I get two matches. PSC 1610v and PSC 1610xi.
  16. Hi. Do you have a model number? A quick look showed me 52 models of PSC printers. If you give us a model number and as much information as you can on the errors we may find something on the HP site.
  17. Hi Jim. Glad you found the borderless option. There should be a grey scale option too. If you are out of a color of ink grey may be your only option.
  18. So the exe files work but not the shortcuts? Try creating a new shortcut. Navigate to the exe file. Can you right click the exe file. If so select "Send to">"Desktop (Create shortcut)". On a side note Shift+F10 will bring up the right click context menu. This might also be a case of having a virus or it could be your antivirus program or firewall blocking it. I have heard of AVG doing this in the past. Does this mean that you did not have access to some files or folders in safemode?
  19. Hi Ron and Ken. Ken I modified the first part of your instructions slightly since I have Windows 7. 1. Click Start, select Default Programs 2. Click Set your default programs 3. Select your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) from the list 4. Click Set this program as default 5. If needed click Choose defaults for this program (select all options) 6. Click OK
  20. Hi joddle. Anything on the Start menu are just shortcuts to the files, folders or software. You can safely rename any shortcut and the shortcut will still point to the same thing as before.
  21. That's good to hear joddle. It was one of our moderators years ago that clued me in when I had that problem.
  22. Check a couple of things. 1. Make sure the workgroup name is the same on all computers. 2. In the shared folder under sharing make sure there is an entry "Everyone". 3. In the shared folder under Security look in Group or user names: and make sure there is an entry "Everyone". Number 3 has caused the one way issue for me with a XP and 7 network setup but I can't remember if I got asked for a name and password or if I just couldn't access it. Worth a try.
  23. I can't read this. Rob why have you added non-breaking space html code in your post?
