  1. Trust me. That would be far easier. I've done it before and it's extremely time consuming to do it manually for every single update ever made for an OS. There are links to the downloads but often times you have to navigate to more pages. Also ocassionaly you have to search the Microsoft downloads. And just to make it more complicated sometimes you have to search the Windows Update Catalog site. Yes there is one. It's not well known that it exists for Windows 7 and Vista but it does. Even there it gets more complicated. You have to know what updates to search for and you need to search by name, KB and dates. Like I said it is not a task I recommend unless you have a lot of time and savy. You can buy the SP disks but other updates come out continually. As for security that is a whole different issue.
  2. There is a stand alone installer for the service packs. As for the other updates you could turn off automatic updates. Then when they are available look to the right and you will see "more information". Following that link you can find the stand alone installers or navigate to them. From there you can save instead of run. It can turn into a very tedious project.
  3. HKCU is part of the registry. It looks like a registry key is calling on the dll file at startup. Google and pacs-portal can't seem to find anything on those entries however. That concerns me so before doing anything drastic you should post the OTL log. Taking it out of startup is harmless and may help so give that a try.
  4. Have a look here. It's worth a try. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
  5. I think Nev is right on. This has to be a missing file or missing installer file from something you installed if it's not malware. So I ask again Did you install anything recently? If so do a system restore to before that time. Did you "Tick Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files."
  6. Thanks Nev. I forgot about grouping pics into folders. I do that too now. I liked it better when I could manually sort pics too but alas the days of my old Windows ME are long gone. :D
  7. There are other "sort by" or "group by" options. It may or may not give you what you want. While in your pictures folder press the Alt key. Now you should see another toolbar at the top. Click on View to see more options. Also notice the "More" option at the bottom after you select sort by. Short of that the only thing I can think of is to rename the pictures. Possibly by adding a number or letter at the beginning. apic1, bpic13, cpic42 or 1pic1, 2pic17 etc.
  8. That file is not in my Windows 7 either. Further there should not be any DLL files in that folder (C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\apssk.dll) Open a folder and press the Alt key click on Tools>Folder options>View. Tick Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Now you should be able to navigate and view the file there. DLL files are usually shared files installed by third party programs. If it's not there then the installed program obviously can't find it. Thus the error. But here's the thing. A DLL file should not be in that folder. This of course leads to the possibility of malware. Especially since I can't find any info on it. Have you recently installed any software. You could try doing a system restore but I would be inclined to have a malware specialist look at this first. Would you like to investigate a malware possibilty?
  9. Very well done. I wish him luck.
  10. Just a guess here but AVG usage seems high to me. I've seen AVG cause some strange things. Also have you ever ran a different malware scan besides AVG?
  11. This might be a hardware issue. Based on the rest of your post you could try reinstalling XP or Windows 7 from the original installation disks. That would be illegal. You either have them or need to purchase them.
  12. Maybe this link will help with determing your version of Norton. https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080417101717EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home As etavares has said there used to be an issue with Norton eating up drive space but that was some time ago. As Norton can be a real pain to remove and a mention was made I would use the uninstall tool if you choose to go that route. Please wait for etavares to reply before doing anything.
  13. Hi eddie. One of these two Microsoft links may hold the answer. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/contacts-are-missing-when-i-click-the-to-cc-or-bcc-buttons-HA010219428.aspx http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287563
  14. These may just be Targeting Ads and not pop-ups. This is common for instance with google ads etc. An ad will appear by design of the website. The nature of the ad will target things you may be interested in based on recent browser activity. I know you said you regularly delete cookies and temp files which the ads use to target advertise. You also said this started happening after switching to the Chrome browser. It may be that you need to clear the Chrome cache after browsing. Look in your Chrome options. I know this is the way it works in Firefox. Temp files are usually used by Internet Explorer so deleting cookies and temp files is fine for that but as you said you are now using Chrome. For information on actuall Chrome pop-up settings start here then look at all the other options. http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=95472 You may also want to look at the Content settings. Here is a good link. http://www.technoon.com/how-to-disable-pop-up-windows-in-google-chrome.html
  15. From my past experience with Firefox the transition should be seamless. As for add-ons it depends. If they are supported they should be OK. If not Firefox will look for updated versions of the add-ons. If none are found then you're out of luck untill they rewrite them. If they ever do. Make a manual system restore point Airborne if you're worried. You can always roll back.
  16. Sorry maynard but you let it slip out. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GOOD FRIEND.
  17. Does anything at all happen when you try to print? Try this. Go to Start>Run. In the Run box type these commands one at a time. regsvr32 ole32.dll regsvr32 vbscript.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll After typing the first one click OK. Reboot and test the print. Repeat with the next two.
  18. No it will not. You will still have everything.
  19. In your run box type winver. This will tell you what version of Windows you have and what service pack. With Internet explorer open press ALT+H, and then click About Internet Explorer. Does anything at all happen when you try to print?
  20. Is Windows fully updated? You should be running XP SP3 (service pack 3) and IE (Internet Explorer 8)
  21. Hi. Are you trying to print from a email client like Outlook or Windows Mail or trying to print from web based mail, that is by going to a website to view your mail. What method are you using to print? File>Print perhaps or maybe highliting then right clicking to select print. Do you get any errors? The more clues the better please.

  23. What scan was that rebecca?
  24. I just wanted to mention that if this is a laptop you should only be using it on a hard flat surface. Not a lap, bed cushion, mat etc. As etavares said it could be a heat issue.
  25. You could try what Goku suggested.
