Hi. It may have been that you clicked the donate button but did not donate. That would send us a notification that you donated even if you did not. I'm not getting the owners confirmation emails so I would have to assume a donation was made. This happens once in a while. Nothing to worry about. Best wishes.

Add or remove programs not populating a list
RandyL replied to heckler55's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I have seen malware prevent the list from populating. Granted that was some time back. If they made an image of your drive and reimaged after the reinstallation they may have put the malware right back on again. I think I will ask our malware team what they think. I don't know who worked on your machine or exactly what they did. For instance the imaging, the diagnostics, the malware scans and the method of reinstallation. What I do know is that if they did a complete reinstallation then immediately tried to open the list then it should have populated unless there is a hardware issue such as bad ram or failing drive. Is everything else working ok? Do you have the Windows or recovery disks? I'll await the malware teams opinion on this. -
Add or remove programs not populating a list
RandyL replied to heckler55's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
How much memory do you have (RAM)? How many different sticks? What hardware diagnostics did you run? Are you saying you made a complete image of drive C then ran it after reinstalling? When did you run those virus scans? Before or after the reinstall? -
Hi and welcome. Is it possible that the folder pane is too narrow and is cutting off the letters? What happens if you drag the edge of the pane to the right?

Add or remove programs not populating a list
RandyL replied to heckler55's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
So you did a complete reinstall and the problem still exists? Does this happen immediately after the reinstall? Is there anything else that is slow to open immediately after the reinstall? The reason I ask is because this either indicates a hard drive, ram or malware issue. A failing drive can cause it. A bad drive will slow things down. Failing or insufficient ram can cause it. SP3 alone needs a lot of ram. Malware can cause it. Anything using resources will slow things down but some malware will purposely try to prevent you from getting into add/remove. What programs have you installed? What antivirus do you have? What amount of memory do you have? Any torrent software? A few timelines and details please. -
Hi. Have you tried booting into safemode? If you can try a system restore.

Have a look here to see how to reset the counter to 0 in the registry. http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/why.htm#compact You should always backup the registry before making any changes. Proceed cautiously. On another matter I would never depend on OE to store mails. The risk of corruption high.

Windows 7 DVD burning problem

Hi. I moved your other post and sent you a message before I knew about this thread. As this issue is now being handled in this thread I will delete the other thread. Thanks for your understanding. -
Problem with direct X (??) Windows 7 64bit
RandyL replied to imfromczechbaby's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
This is not possible. Only one version can be run and only version 11 will work on Windows 7. DirectX 9 cannot be installed on Windows 7. Although I can't read the full error or language it is a dll file error. Is this Czech? How do you know that is the exact translation? You say "it should be" Either way a dynamic link library file of this nature indicates a software problem with the program or incompatability with your operating system. Update Windows and reinstall the software. Do you have the original game disk? This combination might help. -
[Solved] Packard Bell Drivers?
RandyL replied to Pozzouk's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I'm not the expert here but I will throw in my 2 cents. Like all stop errors it's hard to determine the exact cause. It could be memory, drivers or Windows system files corruption. I'm inclined to believe this is a system file corruption. This could be due to a failing drive but more likely the fact that you just swapped drives without reinstalling Windows. It could also be a combination of incompatable drivers and the failure to reinstall Windows. Although the repair if done properly often works there is no gaurantee that it will. The fact that it made it worse leads me to believe that you really only have two options to fix this. 1. Reinstall Windows. This option will give you a clean start although you will need to get additional drivers after. If it does not work then that leads to a hardware problem such as a failing hard drive or memory etc. 2. Try a brand new hard drive and install Windows. If that works then it was the drive. If not then a different hardware problem. However answer Kens questions first as it is possible that it is something else. For instance a safemode startup would indicate a possible driver issue. Forget about RAID. A RAID setup is designed to make two drives operate as one. So unless you have Windows installed across two hard drives the point is mute. Sorry I can't offer more. -
Since this is an upgrade installation you're going to have a problem reinstalling 98 before installing XP. You should just run the XP installation again to format the drive. The reason is that XP is NT and 98 is DOS. In order to install 98 you do have to use a 98 boot floppy then run format c: at the a:> (Personally I always ran fdisk too) The problem is that the boot floppy works on the 98 DOS based system. Since you have now installed XP your system is NT based and not DOS. NT does not need boot disks. A 98 boot disk will work on a blank hard drive though so it might work. However since your XP is probably NTSF the disk might not work to format since it was designed to work on FAT systems. Best bet: Just reinstall XP Next best bet: Slave the drive to another computer and run a full format. Use a 98 boot disk to begin the 98 installation. Make sure you have your product key.

Problems with driver/burning CD's in Windows 7
RandyL replied to troberts's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Go to your run box and type devmgmt.msc Look in your optical drive section there to see if any problems are flagged. There is a good reason to try a dvd. You can burn a dvd data disk just like a cd data disk. On a combo drive it might be that just the cd portion has gone bad. As I understand it they use two different lasers. So if you can make a dvd data disk but not a cd data disk then that would point to a faulty drive. So many are made cheap and many of them often do fail. I've replaced quite a few and some had not even been used much. -
Problems with driver/burning CD's in Windows 7
RandyL replied to troberts's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome. Have you looked in device manager to see if it's showing any errors with the drive? There shouldn't be a problem with cd-r so I'm going to assume the problem exists with all cd's. I'm also going to assume that this is a cd/dvd combo drive that can also burn dvd's. Are you able to burn a dvd? -
Try the link I suggested please.

I'm not surprised given the amount of corruption I see on your computer. However since you don't want to fix all your corruption issues by reinstalling Windows look at this link. http://windowslivehelp.com/solution.aspx?solutionid=64db5c80-85e4-49fe-bf07-cb08ffc5dd53 If steps 1 or two don't work try step 3. Note the downloadable exe file at the bottom if the local copy is corrupted.

That link says "This is an automated VGN-NR38E S Windows Vista driver restore disk." I don't think that is the full vista restore disk. You might be able to get the disks from Sony but if it's the same mobo you won't need them.

You need the compaq XP recovery disk that came with your computer or the one you made. What happened to your Compaq recovery disks? It should be plastered all over your computer. For instance Compaq-Presario-5000 or similar.

Hi shnos. What happened to your Compaq recovery disks? From what I'm seeing a complete reinstallation is in order. What is the model and number of the Compaq?

New Desktop slower than old Laptop
RandyL replied to MooreIsHardcore's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi. Unfortunately we are not able to provide help with non-genuine copies of Windows as it's against our rules. My suggestion is to purchase a legal version of Windows from Microsoft and install that. You just might find that things will run a whole lot better. -
That is strange. By any chance is it in a zipped or compressed folder?

I've had that problem in the past. What I did was locate the Messenger folder and delete it. Look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live Yours may not be that exact file path name but you get the idea. Just don't delete the entire Windows Live folder. Just delete the Messenger folder there.
