Yes Colonel, that would surely be a good alternative provided you know how to use it. Read the guide that comes with it first so that you may get an idea of it. When you are ready, perform a disk check and post back the results as soon as possible. Good Luck. :) -- Goku

Hello and Welcome to FPCH Pixel. :) Firefox 3 has come out of its Beta stage and is now fully developed. It is much more quicker than Firefox 2 and is also lighter on resources. To see a full list of other features added to it, look here. From my own personal experience, Firefox 3 is quite an improvement over Firefox 2. The Download package has been grown in size a bit but it is worth the trouble to get a more secure Mozilla. In my opinion, you should switch to it as soon as possible. You can download it from here if you like. :) -- Goku

James, you have indeed put up a very good solution to combat the slow speed of your computer. As you say, I think it will be a short term fix but please post back here if the problem occurs again. Once again, congratulations for fixing your problem for now. As for your question regarding a Trojan, it will not activate itself unless you execute it. Trojans can be removed by deleting them but some of the more stubborn ones need advanced measures to remove them. Deleting the Trojan from your external drive should have removed it unless it replicated itself. However, please continue with the scan for safety purposes. Once again, Thank you for posting your experience here. It may help us tackle future cases similar to yours. :) -- Goku

Well, with that amount of RAM, I think the problem is not Vista but an infection. Can you please try and scan any external media from which you are transferring your data? I believe the backup source has been infiltrated and infected in some way. Please try and scan it with AVG and see if it has any infections. Our Malware experts will take the case as soon as they come online so please bear with us till then. Also, post back the results of the scan as soon as possible. Good Luck. :) -- Goku

Hello and Welcome to FPCH James. :) As Maynard and Randy have already asked, how much RAM do you have? Vista uses a tremendous amount of RAM to operate smoothly and seeing you have no ordinary version of it, I think the demands would be comparatively higher. Another thing is that were you using XP before. Because if you started experiencing problems after an upgrade, then I think you have put your finger on the problem. In that case, I would recommend you to downgrade to XP or upgrade your system. Please clarify the needed details. :) -- Goku

Goku replied to Gaz77's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hello and Welcome to FPCH Gaz. :) Can you please clarify if you mean your hard drive. If it is then, state so in your next post and we will help you out. It might be that ther program might be still on your hard drive and therefore "blocking" the disk space. Please elaborate the problem if you can. Thank you for your patience and co-operation. -- Goku -
Hello John. I think something is running in the background that is either having a problem starting up and is timing out, and / or you have too much programs starting with Windows. Try the steps provided in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base and see if there is any improvement or not. How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state How to troubleshoot configuration errors by using the System Configuration utility in Windows XP Post back the results of the above procedures and we will instruct you further. It might as well be that you have an infection that is causing the problems but we will rule out the possibility for now. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck. :) -- Goku

Hello Aldin. If you are trying to do a repair installation of Windows XP, then the disc should do fine with the repairing. However, it will not be able to install the updates and patches that might have been included in Service Pack 3. For that, you will have to repair your computer and redownload them. If you want to make your computer bootable for now, then the disk should easily help you that far without any problems. :) -- Goku

No worries Bob as there are plenty of other solutions to try. Have you tried the Windows Update Agent? If not, then please try using it and see if it helps or not. Good Luck. :) -- Goku

Hello Bob. Please have a read of the following articles from the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Unable to install Windows updates Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation The second article may not be directly relevant but it still concerns your symptoms. Hope you are able to fix your problem soon. Good Luck. :) -- Goku

Hello and Welcome to FPCH Paul. :) First, try what Dalo said but from what you posted, I think you have already tried it. Even if you have, please try it again and see if it is of any help or not. If the above doesn't work, then try repairing the Master Boot Record. The first reason is more likely for the cause of your problem but if the drive is unbootable, you may get the errror message too. Repair and Restore Master Boot Record (MBR) Please try and see if that too resolves the problem or not. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck. :) -- Goku

Windows Media Player Problems
Goku replied to leeajohnson's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Exactly as Dalo says, Lee. Try playing the DVD with some other player. If the video still plays dark, then its either your monitor configuration or a bad DVD. If it is a Windows Media Player specific problem, then the following article might help you out. Playing Video in Windows Media Player Let us know if it helps or not. Good Luck. :) -- Goku
