  3. As a run-of-the-mill business application developer, one usually pays for presentation layer software from DevExpress/Infragistics and so forth. Money usually goes to attaining the latest and greatest Office mimicking UI, and your developers 'thrash out' the necessary*business logic. Rudi Grobler has just posted a simply excellent example of creating an Office 2007 Navigation Pane in WPF, using just the standard WPF tab control. Usually one* would have to spend $200-$400 (without the source code) from - to choose two random presentation vendors - *http://www.actiprosoftware.com/Products/DotNet/WPF/Navigation/Default.aspx or http://www.devcomponents.com/. The real beauty here is that one can skin the complete*application using the same resource dictionary, which is super-duper-powerful! This allows for*a uniform 'look and feel' across the application, normally an absolute pain to implement*with windows forms. When you also take into account that Scott Gu recently announced that*a major update to*WPF is imminent (summer 2008), and that WPF will have a new Ribbon Control and DataGridView*out-of-the-box, a personal proclivity is developing toward WPF. I think that these controls are already available in Silverlight 2 beta, but lack sufficient time to check this out to confirm. This summers*update will address key problems I have highlighted in the past with WPF, primarily poor performance with list type data,*and an unavailability of third party controls. If you also 'factor in' .NET cold and warm start up times being significantly*improved, the WPF 'stack' is certainly gathering momentum. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  5. I am trying to sort out a build system using the MSBuild product that comes with the .NET framework. Specifically, I am looking to check out various ASsemblyInfo.cs files, update the build number and then check them back in. I am storing the build number itself in VSS as it should only be update daily and it's shared with multiple projects. So 2 questions 1) How can I update the build number by getting the version file, having MSBuild utilize it/read it in some fashion (I could store it as a XML file and MSBuild should be able to suck it in as some sort of parameter) and then update the AssemblyInfo files to reflect the value it has. 2) Looping.* I Understand that using the % simulates a for loop to some degree.* However, in the case of checking in checking out of VSS using the MSBuild.Community.Tasks.Targets package I am finding I have to make one CheckIn/CheckOut call per file which strike me as a bit daft.* For example for Checkin it looks something like this: * ** ** ** ** ** *** ****** ** There must be some way I can make use of an ItemGroup to reduce this to one VssCheckin block.* Because botht the LocalPath and Path values have dynamic content in this sense using two "%" in a VssCheckin call does not work very well :-) Suggestions? Thanks, Col More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  7. Good morning, folks. I wonder if anyone could help me set up my Windows 2008 box, which I've been fiddling with. Doing this mostly blindly, since I never messed with this before. I have a Windows 2008 server behind a router. My router is the DHCP server. I now want to enable VPN access into it. My router doesn't support it, so I opened all the necessary LL2P ports pointing at the server and installed Routing and Remote Access on the Windows server. I've also set up DHCP Relay pointing at the router's IP. My understanding is that when my remote client connects, the server will forward the DHCP request to the router, get an IP for me and let me start working. What seems to be happening is that my remote client gets the same IP as the server, which naturally doesn't really help much. I tried giving RRAS a set of static IP addresses instead of DHCP Relay, but that gives me a default gateway and subnet mask that only allow me to access that specific subrange, not the rest of the local network. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  8. Just reading this over on the BBC site. "Phorm works by placing a cookie on a user's machine that contains a randomised identifying number. That cookie tracks websites visited and draws conclusions about a user's behaviour in order to target more relevant adverts. By partnering directly with ISPs, the OIX can draw from the greatest supply of browsing information and avoid the limitations of purely site-based data. OIX ad-serving technology uses "behavioural keywords" - keywords derived from a combination of search terms, URLs and even contextual page analysis, over time - to find the right users. The depth of data in the OIX creates an unparalleled targeting capability that translates into unlimited valuable advertising opportunities." Normall I'm not that bothered by adds on sites, most are there to support the sites themselves.* If I*have issue with the ad system on a site I just don't visit the site. By embedding the data collection into the ISP it takes that option away from me.* I am a firm beliver that the ISP should provide a clean untouched data feed.* This is like someone listening to your phone calls and sending you mail based on it. I for one will opt out of this from the start. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
