As you know from my recent computer problems thread, I updated my system. Part of the reason for this was so that I could check out Flight Simulator X with DirectX 10. I did, and it's a disaster. Phil Taylor's blog (PM on the Flight Simulator team)*said that FSX would be faster with the DX10 renderer, but it's not, it's considerably slower. It also looks worse. Exhibit A This is a screenshot taken with the regular DirectX 9 renderer. All settings are on ultra-high (global settings, I didn't set all the custom sliders to max)*with anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing enabled. Notice it's hitting the target framerate of 30fps. Exhibit B The same screenshot, taken with the DirectX 10 renderer, with the exact same settings otherwise. Notice how the framerate is now only 15fps. Also notice how the aircraft's shadow is not anti-aliased! Here's a side-by-side comparison.*The shadows in DX10 look considerably worse than in DX9. Exhibit C This screenshot demonstrates the DX10 virtual cockpit shadows feature. DX9 doesn't have this feature at all. While the idea of cockpit shadows sounds very good, it looks horrible. Look at how jagged those shadows are! I thought this was 2008, not 1998. It's rediculous. I'm also not th only one who's reported this behaviour. Maybe it's all much better on nVidia cards and ACES didn't test it on ATI or something. Note that because of the incorrect DDI version in dxdiag on Vista 64 bit I also tried this with Vista 32 bit. Although the DDI version is reported correctly in Vista 32 bit, the results with FSX are exactly the same (and in fact, those shots were taken on Vista 32 bit). On a positive note, the hardware upgrade did improve performance significantly. This screenshot (DX9) shows I get good performance even with rediculous amounts of scenery on screen. I'd be lucky to get 5fps with those settings on the old config. It still struggles with the PMDG 747-400X*because that plane is a real CPU killer, so I still need to reduce settings to fly with that, although no as much as before. Interestingly, it's mainly the virtual cockpit that's trouble on that plane, in outside views I can get 30fps fairly easily (with slightly reduced scenery and water effects) but in the cockpit it's much harder to get decent performance. I just noticed that the ActiveX Test Container (tstcon32.exe) was missing from Visual Studio 2008, and it's not in the latest Windows SDK. Is this an oversight, or does Microsoft just think that no one is building ActiveX controls anymore? :P It's not a big deal, since I have a copy of it with Visual Studio 2005, but it is handy for testing them in the debugger, particularly when using scripts. After googling around I came to this: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=928547&SiteID=1 which was pretty sketchy as to what it was, but led to this: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/khbh432d(VS.80).aspx I was worried because it popped up in my* :\Downloads folder, where I put *everything* I download ready to filter into other files. Made me wonder whether I'd been hit by something :P What I want to know is why have they suddenly popped up in my R-Click New menu, and why have they been created in some folders, without my knowledge? I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit on an AMD 64-bit duo processor system.* I tried installing RealPlayer, the free version, onto my system, but that failed.* Now I cannot run it, uninstall it, or attempt to install a new version.* Whenever I try to call it I get the following error message: This application has failed to start because MSVCP71.DLL was not found.* Re-installing the application may fix this problem. I've been looking around for help on this and it has been suggested that this DLL is a part of VS 2003.* That may be the case, I did not install VS 2003 onto my system, as I just want to go with VS 2005 and VS 2008.* Anyway, what is the cause of this error and what can I do to remedy it? I just found some time to install VS2008 at Home, as well as running WindowsUpdate etc. After a few restart, install is done and I run services.msc just to make sure everything is alright. At there, I found that "Windows Event Log"* is not starting. I started to start it manually, and got error message "Error 5: Access is denied." I fired up Sysinternals' Procmon.exe to check, and found it have trouble opening "%windir%\System32\winevt\Logs\System.evtx". Having checked the service runs in "Local Service" account, I granted read/write access to files in this folder, and the service started successfully. Checked G**gle and see there's other people experienced similar problem but cannot find a solution, I decided to post it here. And also hope the others see if there's other consequence on granting the access to the account. P.S.: I compared the folder to the raw installation(Jan 2007 DVD only, patches not applied) image of Vista (I created one immediately after installation after my last reinstall) and found this folder does not exist on that copy. So this ought to be something new. P.S.2: After successfully started the service, the system seems runs significantly faster. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
