I got a new processor today (Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz) to replace my old Pentium D.* Right now I'm running Vista Ultimate x64, and am planning on going back to 32 bit.* Before I did that, though, I wanted to see if WGA would nag me if I replaced the processor, as I had heard around the interenet. Well, it doesn't.* I put in the new processor, started up, pressed Ctrl+Shift+Esc and saw that there were two more cores shown.* That was it.* No problemo. FUD Dispelled! Now, I'm not saying that I like WGA, but I don't think it's right to dislike it for reasons that aren't true.* Anyway, it hasn't given me any problem so far... More... Hello all! I'm having problems with Visual Basic.Net. Well, I have been working for 4 days on a small project of mine and today, as I was adding a new small feature in the menu strip of my application, I wanted to test it so I clicked the Start Debugging icon in the VB.NET menu. The new item in the menu strip simly did not appear in the program at all! I tried moving objects in the interface and when I clicked on Start Debugging again all of the moved objects were not moved at all. The simplest explanation to that would be that the build does not work properly and now what I see when I debug is a previous version of my work. I have tried many times to build and rebuild my application without any results at all. I have looked on the internet at many places and none seemed to provide any explanation on how this could happen. If anybody could help me I would be eternally grateful to you as I don't want to think I have lost 4 days of hard work... Thank you. Goldor. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Shuttle introduced its $199 KPC Linux PC here on Tuesday. The company didn't have it on display on the actual floor of the convention halls here at the Consumer Electronics Show (too late did I find out you had to zip over to a private suite at the Bellagio for a look-see), but booth representatives were happy to talk details. Catherine Heller sat down with Marc Mercuri, Architect on the platform incubation team, to discuss one of Marc’s recent incubation projects, Tafiti, and how it evolved into a Windows Live Quick Application. Tafiti is an experimental search front-end from Microsoft that uses Silverlight and Live Search to provide a rich Web experience and specialization of search. (Here are some previous interviews on Tafiti, in case you missed them: First Look: Microsoft Tafiti, Marc Mercuri on platform incubation and Tafiti) Windows Live Quick Applications are customizable out-of-the box solutions for specific Web scenarios. Each Quick App is built on Windows Live services and is offered as a source code download. The Tafiti Quick App illustrates search visualization. At around 00:26:44, Marc announces a contest! Do you have an interesting specialized search experience in mind? Something you might build by repurposing the Tafiti Quick App source code? Marc is going to give away limited edition Tafiti t-shirts to the top-5 coolest submissions . So send your submission to tafiti@tafiti.com before February 15th, 2008 to be considered! hello all, i'm working on a quiet old console application. It mainly calls various procedures, whose outputs are either on console or trace. Nothing graphical that is. my first job was to make sure we got a permanent trace (as with the basic console.write() instructions, output is lost when application exits). So i started by redirecting on file: string fileName = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["BatchOutput.LogFile"]; fs = new FileStream(fileName, FileMode.Create, FileAccess.ReadWrite); sw = new StreamWriter(fs); oldOut = Console.Out; Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now.ToString("dd/MM/yy HH:mm:ss") + " - " + string.Format("Redirecting output to {0}", fileName)); Console.SetOut(sw); flusher = new System.Threading.Timer(new TimerCallback(delegate(object sender) { Console.Out.Flush(); }), new AutoResetEvent(true), 0, 1000); Works fine. But now, i'm asked to develop a gui interface to replace the old console application, and have the output displayed in a textbox. Quiet easy task: redirecting console.out to a texbox is no big deal, you (basically) just have to design some textwriter based class and override Write and Writeln methods: *internal sealed class FeedbackWriter : TextWriter *{ **(...) ** **public override void Write(string value) **{ ***_textBox.AppendText(value); **} ** **public override void WriteLn(string value) **{ ***_textBox.AppendText(value + Environment.Newline); **} **(...) *} This would just have worked fine if i didn't forget one thing: the application starts various processes during run time. Those processes call Console.Write(). And as none of them created the TextBox, it ends with Cross Threading exceptions. So i googled the problem and end with a solution: * delegate void addDelegate(string text); * public override void Write(string value) **{ ***if (_textBox.InvokeRequired) ***{ ****IAsyncResult res = _textBox.BeginInvoke(new addDelegate(_textBox.AppendText), value.Replace("\n", base.NewLine)); ****_textBox.EndInvoke(res); ***} ***else ***{ ****_textBox.AppendText(value); ***} ***Application.DoEvents(); **} It should work, but for an unknown reason, calling _textBox.EndInvoke() will freeze the app. Same goes if i use _textBox.Invoke() instead of .StartInvoke(). And if i use .StartInvoke() without the subsequent .EndInvoke(), app will run normally, but the textbox will be "fed" when calling process ends (wich could take some minutes during wich we wouldn't see any output) I tried with backgroundworkers and*got same results: either i get the output*when process exits, or the application freezes. Anyone got an idea why ? Thanks * More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

After a popular stint, it seems The Ultimate Steal program for students has reached Airstrip One. Around £39. Okay... it's more expensive than in Aus, still better than the £500 or so Amazon are charging. Of course, I won't personally be using it (respect system colour settings or die) since there's a lot of UK students here, it's worth checking out. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

There has got to be a way to change how VS2008 resizes the columns in the error list. In any normal grid, you grab the splitter on the right side of a column and it moves all the columns*on the right to the right leaving them the same size.* in VS it shrinks the next column on the right leaving everything else in place!* So if I want to enlarge the Description field, I have to individually resize File, Line, Column and project to make space, that’s insane! Guys, Our large(ish) project is about to kick off.* The tool of choice *is the IBM toolset for Business Capture and Analysis, Use Cases, Design etc. Clear case will be used for CM control. Visual Studio (Was 2005, hopefully now 2008) for Software Development We are about to start a small study into using RME.NET to link the Rational Software Modellor system to Visual Studio. Rational Software Modellor RME.NET I am going to push v. hard for VS2008 as our development environment. My question is twofold. 1.* Does anyone have any experience of using Rational Software Modellor with Visual Studio integration via RME.NET and if so, is it considered valuable, will it support all the richness that raw C# gives you (Attributes, Delegates, partial classes, all .NET Types*etc) or does it support only basic Class Design and simple types. 2.* Does anyone know if it integrates with VS2008 or whether the API's published by VS2008 to allow integration by tools of these types have changed from VS2005. Any experience of using an "external" design tool like Rational Software Modellor with Visual Studio would be gratefully received.* Especially in areas such as "does it add value to the process", "Is it a view on the code like the built in class designer", "Does it fully support all the .NET Types and constructs". Thanks for your time Mike Read More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
