  1. I work for a pharmaceutical company in Virginia. We use handheld mobile devices on our shop floor to capture and move inventory, etc. We currently use Data3 MRP II. This system handles inventory, shipping/receiving, financial info, scheduling and planning, etc. We are going to start using SAP (a different MRP system). The operators will begin to access SAP by using Internet Explorer on the handheld devices. We currently have "some" restrictions on internet use (restricts access to webmail and IM programs), however, we will need to limit internet access on the handhelds so that ONLY SAP can be accessed. These devices use Pocket PC 2003 (Windows Mobile). Is there a registry file that can be edited to restrict internet access? If so,*which registry file is it and how should it be changed? More... 5. I use VS 2003 for maintenance on a couple of projects. 1 particular solution gives me headaches. I start it up, and the IDE hangs/stops in the middle of loading with the status bar saying 'Initializing offline cache...' At times, if I close down just about every application (even IM and IE) I can get it to run without hanging there. I have also had times where, if several programs were running and I had the solution loaded, starting debugging hung. The laptop I use has 2Gb of RAM on it. Any thoughts on what could be causing this or how to better debug the situation? Edit: BTW, the 2 main solutions I'm working with (1 works, 1 has this problem) are both ASP.Net 1.1 solutions) More... 9. Sooo, littleguru pointed me here and to C8,*Edge. I´ve been bugging Charles for lower bit + frame rates for months now and I see this is (partially) available on C8 (and soon?*in 9!)*in combo with desired target formats like iPod,... which is great. And he promised explicit mention of whiteboarding or code apart from existing implicit hints from the preview image. As I went through a lot of sites recently I may mix things up, but my impression is that consistency and informativeness*of file names still leave a lot to be desired?! I.e. topic first, then people,...??? As I have influential people here: Could anyone give my regards to the Webcast team?! The Webcasts are unbelievably great (and that at 10MB for an hour), but to go through six windows for one download is the worst I´ve seen in the whole industry. And if this wasn´t enough one always downloads to the same filename!!! On top of that since recently WMVs come zipped. Yet another step - WHICH RESULTS IN THE SAME FILE NAME. Unbelievably hard to keep track of several downloads at one time and real work. As I have influential people here: Have to use the ancient spyware Go!Zilla download manager (don´t care to search for yet another one) because I can´t persuade the MS File Transfer Manager to kick in for the 1GB SQL Nov CTP download!!! My connection occassionably drops. REAL FUN with a 1GB d/l!!! Thanks for any help! G. More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds
  10. Many friends ask me how to burn iTunes movies to DVD, so that they can enjoy their movies on large screen TV. For computer newbie, I will recommend them to get an Apple TV; it can connect your iTunes library to TV, the only thing you need to do is to sync movies from iTunes to Apple TV box. An Apple TV costs $299, if you think this is beyond your budget, you can use software to do that same thing, which is a lot cheaper. Now, let me explain the details. Because movies and TV shows purchased from iTunes store have DRM copy-protection, you have to remove the DRM protection before burning them to DVDs for playback on your home DVD player. What you need are:**Aimersoft DVD Creator & Tunebite. You can download them from: http://www.aimersoft.com/dvd-creator.html Part1. How to remove DRM copy-protect from iTunes purchased movie or TV shows? Step1. Download and install Tunebite, just follow the installation wizard, this software will install several high-speed dubbings to speed up the conversion, when you see the pop up warning messages, just click “Keep on going” to finish the installation, which may take a few minutes. Step2. Then run Tunebite, click “Add” button to load your iTunes purchased movies or TV shows, the default directory is My Document\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music In the “Convert Video to” drop down list, select “WMV7 (1024 kbps)”, then click “Start” to begin the conversion. If you don’t know where the converted videos are saved, you can click “Folder” to locate the files on your computer. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2007/2088621194_4c1e7d3c2d_o.gif Tips: this software can also remove DRM from purchased music and audio books; it also works for other online stores such as Zune, Amazon, etc. Part2. How to burn DRM-free iTunes video to DVD? Step1. After you remove the DRM copy-protection from iTunes purchased movies, download Aimersoft DVD Creator and install it. (Note, you need a DVD Burner to burn DVD, so make sure your DVD Drive has DVD+RW or DVD-RW symbol) Step2. Run Aimersoft DVD Creator, click “Load Video” button to import your DRM-free videos, and then drag the videos to the storyboard. If you want to burn videos to dual-layer DVD (DVD-9), at the bottom of the interface, select “DVD-R 9.0G”, you can also customize video quality there. And the used disc space is shown on the disc space bar underneath the storyboard. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2042/2088546410_d5fe9c71c0_o.gif Step3. If you just want to burn the video to DVD without adding any special effects, just click the “Burn” tab. Here you will see the following options: “Burn to”: you can burn the video to DVD or create an ISO file on your hard drive. “Drive”: If your computer has multiple DVD burners, you can select any of them. “TV Standard”: NTSC is 30 fps. It’s used in USA, Canada and Japan. PAL is 25 fps and it’s used in Europe and Asia. After the above steps, put a blank DVD disk into your drive and click “Start” to burn your movie. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2114/2087755427_4ff9e264cb_o.gif Tip. You can use this software to add special effects to the your videos and also create a DVD menu so you can use DVD remote control to control the playback. More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds
  11. I realise that the most important factor is the work that you do and the project that you or your company are involved in. Some people have mature projects, consequently they are restricted to the technological constraints of their version etc. With VS2008 there are a host of new technologies, most importantly though are new ways of doing things. WCF, WPF, WWF, Linq et al. It is this new way of doing things that interests me most. Personally I have found very Linq easy to grasp. Lambda expressions take some getting used to but I now love them and will try and use then wherever possible. I love WCF, which is very easy to learn and implement. VS2008 makes it a doddle to implement (was a bit painful with the command line Svcutil.exe and the orcas beta 2 bugs). WCF is easily implementable with Linq in an n-tier scenario. I admit you haven't the separation stipulated here, but you get used to the fact that your business rules i.e. validation now lives in partial classes and within the WCF service.dll you create and not as seperate .dll's. This new way of doing things, also requires a new way of thinking about problems, approaching and solving them. The people most resistant to change will be the dyed-in-the-wool, can't teach an old dog new tricks developer. Their wisdom is always valuable, but the problem with taking up computing as a career, is that every once in a while, to remain current at least, you have to ditch profuse investment in one technology(ies) and the time spent learning it, and adapt. If you get a compting degree and are out of work for 5 years through illness for example, you have a greater challenge getting employment than an accountant or mathemetician for instance. Obviously database adminstrators deplore this architecture, and will prefer stored procedures, but I find them ( some DBA's) like aristocratic land owners. The last thing you will find is them (aristocrats) relinquishing any of their land for sale or otherwise. DBA's are the same in that they will not have their stored procedures taken away, and will much prefer you 'linq to them instead'. I find WPF a-ma-zing. Look at the carousel by Karsten Januszewski. This is what presentation layer heavyweights Infragistics are copying implementing in their WPFBeta. I think the carousel will present a new refined way of navigating data. The implementation possibilities are endless. I think that will will be taken up in line of business applications as well. If you look at Infragistics, Devexpress, Component Source, Component Factory, Syncfusion, Janus sys etc, they all have had an easy ride. Mimick the latest Office offerings and sell them at a markup. I won't diminish their efforts here because it takes oodles of code to acheive the rendering of a datagrid view for instance, but they have not been creative here. They have merely augmented the available controls. The rules of the game are changing with WPF and they are going to have to come up with new interface designs on their own, not just rely on an Outlook collapsable navigation bar (a few nicely coloured buttons that collapse and hold a tree view), and an enhanced datagrid view. WWF has been less easy to implement. I agree with the idea in principle, and everything I am doing seems to fit in the workflow paradigm. The only problem is that even creating a hello world application commences with an anonymous delegate. WWF is not really exciting to learn, albeit at a more abstract, less imperative level. I cannot think of a single redeeming feature apart from it's an excellent programming model. Are there many of you implementing this in production? Couple this with the Model View Controller here and here, even as an architect there is a lot to get your head around. Some of this stuff is really quite dull and difficult to get excited about (learning wise), however powerful it may me.Parellel Computing is inescapable as we are all going to have to adapt to it and then early adopters will have more performant code. Retailers no longer sell single core machines. Are your up to date, or are you lagging behind? More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

  17. Michael Bay (the guy who directed Transformers) is apparently a big Blu-Ray fan. A couple of months ago he threatened not to do a Transformers 2 because Paramount is now backing HD-DVD, then backtracked a day later posting how he watched 300 on HD-DVD and saw that it, and I quote, "rocked". Apparently he still has sour grapes over the whole thing, and now claims the whole format war to be a Microsoft conspiracy. According to Bay, Microsoft is intentionally backing the losing format in order to create confusion in the market until digital delivery is ready for prime time, in order for them to be hailed as heroes on that field. 19. just watched one directly streamed from my PC using WMP11 media sharing. it doesn't seem to apply any image post-processing (luckily my TV* does) however the playback was perfect, no lag, loss of audio sync or freezing frames even on some videos that my standalone player has problems playing. I've seen that it has a very useful video stretching support however it doesn't seem to remember the settings, it also lacks subtitles support and the files won't play on windows media center. however it's absolutely good enough to allow me, finally, to get rid of my old standalone DVD player and also it will make me save the money I would have spent in the future to buy an expensive network media player. good! 20. http://img454.imageshack.us/img454/2961/whatthehellia3.jpg I was checking out on an e-commerce site to buy a nice ATI radeon 3870 and it happened :( tried 3 other times and it still didn't work (I tried disabling the phishing filter, same result) so I remade the order with IE. there was something in the checkout URL that triggered the phishing filter as I could open the website directly with no issues. unfortunately I had to waste half an hour to get my previous unpaid orders canceled (because I couldn't checkout). I admit that the idea of having 4 3870's would have been intriguing but I still can't find games other than Crysis that really need all that power. More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

  23. I say 'startling', but I think I mean 'a tad unbelievable'. Joe Wilcox over at Microsoft-Watch has been talking to analysts again. Ten percent of US Vista sales are going to Mac users. Twenty percent of Office sales in the US, are for the Mac version. Bear in mind that these are retail figures; most Vista and Office 'sales' are actually preloads, which means that it is wholly inaccurate to refer to Apple as a Vista OEM. So, I guess it is possible that ten percent of retail Vista sales are going to Mac users, simply because most Windows users will get it when they buy a new machine. If Apple offered Windows preloaded, then this figure would drop to zero overnight. More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds
