There is a completely different thread about a slightly tangential topic, but I'm noticing a number of pieces of example code that concerns me. I've done this myself, but how 'safe' is it: Console.WriteLine(new String("Bob").Length); The part that concerns me is the accessing of the function 'Length' when you don't really know that the new String has actually been created. The other side of the coin, however, is that you could end up with twice as many lines of code if you check every single variable before using it. What do you do? More... Hi and welcome to another Visual Studio 2008 Training Kit screencast. This session was presented by*Justin Smith*and is the from the Visual Studio 2008 training kit available from http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=7602397. The web has become a huge set of connected data that adheres to a set of standards and protocols. The foundational aspects of the web are the importance of URI composition, the proliferation of HTTP GET, and the descriptive nature of the Content-Type header. Built on WCF extensibility points in the .NET Framework 3.0, WCF in the .NET Framework 3.5 includes first-class support for building services that embrace these tenets of the web. This includes building and consuming syndications, communicating with AJAX applications, Silverlight, or anything else that understands how to pivots to a detailed discussion of the new Web-centric features of WCF in the .NET Framework 3.5. communicate on the web. This presentation briefly describes the tenets of the web in more detail, then pivots to a detailed discussion of the new Web-centric features of WCF in the .NET Framework 3.5. Hi and welcome to another Visual Studio 2008 Training Kit screencast. This session was presented by*Matt Winkler*and is the from the Visual Studio 2008 training kit available from http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=7602397. The major enhancement to Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) inside the .NET Framework 3.5 is the integration with the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) in the functionality known as Workflow Services. This session will introduce the reasoning behind wanting to implement services as workflows and exposing workflows as services and then discuss the architectural foundations behind it. This technology was built upon the existing extensibility mechanisms in the framework and allows one to easily consume services as well as create them using WF. This session will introduce the basics of Workflow Services and then proceed to discuss the more advanced scenarios of duplex communication and conversations with multiple parties over the same contract. Hi and welcome to another Visual Studio 2008 Training Kit screencast. This session was presented by*Nigel Watling*and is the from the Visual Studio 2008 training kit available from http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=7602397. Windows CardSpace provides users with a simple, consistent and secure way to authenticate to applications. Passwords are made redundant by taking advantage of public key cryptography and presenting the user with a set of cards to represent their digital identities. These identities can be provided by the user and by third parties (e.g. banks, employers, government). CardSpace has privacy features, protection against phishing, and support for multi-factor authentication (e.g. smart cards). By utilizing open, standard web and web service protocols, it can be used with any web or web service application, regardless of platform, with minimal effort from the developer. With .NET Framework 3.5 comes an improved UI and the ability to use CardSpace over http as well as https. This session covers both CardSpace fundamentals and the new features. Apart from the many, many people and groups I'd like to see an interview with, the IE team has to be at the top of my list. There's a lot of controversy about their silence, especially after Microsoft's expressed wish to upgrade IE on a regular basis. It's not so much the lack of new versions of IE, but the complete and utter silence that's irking a lot of people. A quick dropping in with the camera to hear how*they're all doing and what's happening next would be a perfect way to take away all that. And in my opinion Channel 9, being all about the conversation, would be the ideal platform for it. Any videos with the IE team scheduled in the near future? Any chance of slipping one in ahead of the others? More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

I imagine there are plenty of C9 musicians out there.* I'm trying to get started with recording a little of my own guitar + piano music.* Since I'm nearly broke, it's not realistic for me to try to get a "proper" setup.* With about $100, what would be the best use of my money? I'm considering one or a combination of the following: - A 1/8" mic that's better than the $10 one currently on my desk.* I've heard that some of the mics used on camcorders do a decent job. - A USB or Firewire audio interface (might be beyond my budget) - A USB Microphone (getting more popular for podcasts it seems) I'll probably use Acid Music Studio since I've had good experiences with that line of products in the past.* I'm not counting that in my $100 budget. Any advice to share?* Hope I'm not the only C9 musician. More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

Honestly who would compare an iPhone to a Kindle, they're two different devices, they're not even meant for the same purpose... But didn't stop TUAW. I can't wait for Steve Jobs... "Apple is so far ahead that Amazon isn't even able to keep up with our technology..." hehe, but I want my iPhone to be as big as my Kindle...I guess all these guys go out to dinner at the same place. I have a "Technical Interview" with a large Manhattan-based software company on Tuesday and I need you guys' help. For those of you who do the hiring at your company: - What are the toughest questions you ask of your interviewees? - What are the questions that get the most blank stares? - What is the one thing an interviewee can do to get/lose the job right off the bat? And for those of you who have been through plenty of interviews: - What's the toughest question you've had to answer during an interview? - Is there any question in particular that you dread being asked? If I get this job it will be my big break.* I think I'm ready, but any extra help will definitely be appreciated. More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds
