Hi Nev, first, I thank Ken for going so far as he did and taking over on this. Shame we couldn't get to the bottom of it though and wonder what it was you did that killed things? Any way, if you still have the machine and of course the hard drive from the machine, is there any data on it that you would like to recover? If so it may be possible to do so even at this stage, please let us know if you wish to go further. Also it is a good idea for your own personal security to remove the drive before scrapping the rest, especially if the computer has been used for any financial on line dealings, such as banking, or if the drive holds any personal details you may wish to keep from others, such as passwords, addresses etc. Once any data required has been recovered, physical destruction of the drive will guarantee that no one else can get at it. Nev.

Just so I get a better understanding is this drive an external drive or the main drive in the machine? If external and has failed where data cannot be recovered, the answer regarding the Knoppix CD does hold a good deal of promise. If however it is an internal drive and even the main drive in the computer, you may first need to remove it physically if it cannot boot into anything, then using a USB adapter lead connect it to another computer as an external drive, you may get what data you need without resorting to the Knoppix method. A lot depends on what damage has occurred to the drive. For info and download of Knoppix look here- KNOPPIX - Live Linux Filesystem On CD You can navigate to a download mirror from there, and also various links on the page to FAQ lists and even a discussion forum. BIOS can't find second HDD

In this instance I feel we should leave this here and not delete it Beeceebee, as the whole subject does need some clarification, and in no way do I see it doing harm to either of the two forums either here or there. Besides, I have asked a few pertinent questions there too. Watch out Wikipedia, I am on the rampage. An edit to add, that if you can understand this, a lot of questions are answered here, not all of them, but most. Defragmentation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Regards to all on this, Nev. -

The only thing now is if all this has jogged someone's memory into remembering another way. Nev. -
Under normal circumstances I would have suggested this may be a heat problem, however considering it will run OK in safe mode and continue for a long period in safe mode it does suggest otherwise, though without anything other than the minimum stuff running heat may not be being built up. If possible a good blowing out with one of those cans of compressed air could possibly be tried. Otherwise it may well be a driver issue in one of the components that is not active in safe mode. Device manager may give you a clue if there is a driver conflict, but it would need to be running in normal mode to check. to get to device manager quickly, click on the start and type in device manager in the search box, then click on device manager. see if there are any red or yellow warning signs. Also once you have typed in device manager, you should see "Update Device drivers". Click on that and providing the machine is on line it will search for and update any driver needing an update A thought here at this point, I have heard of a faulty CD/DVD drive being the cause, so if you can remove and disconnect it, then try and hope that is the answer. Otherwise it is going to be a long hunt through all drivers to find the conflicting or faulty one. Nev.

sending messages to other users (?)

Hi, sorry about this but it does appear that the other users have to be logged on. Not only that, if they log off, or you log them off, the message is lost. I thought it seemed to good to be true when I discovered it. However if the machine can be left on and all users logged on but not active, the system will work. Otherwise it is back to the drawing board. The only way I can see left now, is providing all users have internet access and an E Mail account, is to send them E Mails Nev. -

Oh woops, thanks for letting us know. You aren't the first to do that, even I have plugged speakers into the line in port and wondered why nothing was happening, so you aren't on your own. -

Oh dear, I wonder if they have to be logged on first? Is it possible for you to log into their account, just to at least activate it, or not? I will check that in about an hour or so. Nev. -
Hi Inferect, a quick way to the panel or window you want, is right click on an unused bit of the desktop screen, then select "Personalize". On the bottom you should have "Desktop Background" click on that, this should show you all the pictures you have in "My Pictures" select the one you want, you should then see the background change to that picture. Click on "Save changes", this should bring you back to the personalized window and will show that picture as "Unsaved Theme". click on "Save Theme" Give it a name in the box that appears and click "Save" that should be it done, just close the windows. If anything is missing from my description as you go through it, let us know, and what is missing. Nev.

Due to other commitments I am not able to come on here as often as I would like, so when I do and find a lot of useful advice to members from other members, I appreciate that help too as it is saving me time and work. Thus leaving me more time to keep an eye on the general moderating tasks such as giving spammers the heave, just to name one of them. So a big thanks to all concerned from myself too.

Hi, I had time to set up a temporary second account so I could try it, and yes it does work, the message is displayed as soon as the other user logs on. -
an uninterpretable problem...
Plastic Nev replied to jamesbrown's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, just one minor thing comes to mind, you state the CPU is 2.4Ghz, but we don't know what make, or whether it is single core, dual core or quad. If by some silly mistake at start of build and it is only single core, the minute you put something on the computer and giving the CPU something to do, it would be slow. Hopefully it is a quad core and we can rule that out. Nev. -
I also can get that link to work! It should go to a Microsoft help page. This link also goes to another help page on CD or DVD issues, so try this one- Your CD or DVD drive cannot read or write media Nev.

I hope you come back again for a look Kay as I think I may have found a way to do it, however not having multiple users I can't check it works. Anyway see if this will work, first you need to open the task manager, an easy way is click start, then in the "Run" box type or copy and paste - taskmgr When the window opens click on the "users" tab, next select which user you want to send your message to, then click the "send message" on the bottom right. As I say I can't go further to check as there is only the one user, me. Let us know if that works. Nev. -
You could be right about a board fault, being second hand who knows what may have happened in the past. If as you say the sound is enabled in the BIOS and also works via USB speakers, it does seem that everything has been tried, so it is either a crack in the printed circuit, a broken jack socket, or worse the output chip or transistor has been blown, possibly by someone connecting a shorted lead or even sending a very powerful signal into it. If you don't want to be spending money on a new board, then I can only suggest investing in a set of USB speakers, at least you know they should work. Nev.

Windows 7 themes - Using Sound
Plastic Nev replied to BJD88's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I know this seems a simple question but once the tune showed up in the window, did you click the "Apply" button? I must admit I forgot that one once. However as Randy says, it may be too big a file, it certainly is correct format though as WAV. There is no indication as to a maximum file size though is there, so try a shorter and lower sized file. Here is a tip too, convert the file to MP3, then back to WAV, the compression of MP3 will reduce the MB a little. Nev. -
Thanks I might have to resort to that, there seems no good free ones, even comodo gives problems for too many I have seen.

Hi, if that doesn't work providing you do or can get into safe mode with F8, try the "previously known good" and see if that works. If no to any, can you let us know what type of disk you have that you reinstalled Windows with and what it says on the label if any? That may help us with going further. Nev.

BLTN Maynard and thanks. As I said I now have a new machine with W7 Pro 64 BIT on it, set up seems to have gone OK, Firefox runs, Just the rather daunting task of finding security software that will run on a 64 BIT system. Not a lot of firewalls do that. Nev.

Thanks to all, I had a great day, and got my birthday present, a nice new quad cored Packard Bell, 'tis only a small machine but should cope better with the home video and editing. Otherwise, spent most of the day out and about and had a good time doing it, thanks once again. Nev.

Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help maginty. Can you tell us all you can about the computer, the make and model number at least, that will help us find something suitable for you. Although the Pentium ll is a bit old now, you should still be able to fit a drive with more than 40GB as that is not very large in comparison to what is available now. Nev.

Hi again Nev, if you can get it back to that screen select this entry- PM-WDC WD800AB-00CBA1 That one is the hard drive, it should at least then try to boot, if it does, then all should be OK, if it then comes up with a new fault message let us know what it says. Nev.

Stop trying to run off that copy, go and buy a proper new Windows disk. Randy has already pointed out the installation is not legal from that copy, we cannot help when we know it is a copy and not a genuine new Microsoft Windows disk.
