Help needed for 'Confused'
Plastic Nev replied to Mokles's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I forgot to mention that, make sure the bag is very dry to prevent condensation forming as the drive is chilled down. Nev. -
sending messages to other users (?)
Plastic Nev replied to kay's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Kay, are you administrator of this computer? or just one of the users? If administrator, you should be able to access all other users accounts any way unless there are password protection issues where you don't know those passwords. Which of course we can't help with. I don't know that sticky notes software, but I am assuming it only needs to be installed in your account for it to display the messages to other users. -
ubuntu won't start without cd
Plastic Nev replied to DAIPWYSO's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I am not too sure about what is happening here Dave, it may be that you are only booting the system from the CD and therefore Ubuntu hasn't installed to your hard drive. There may be one or two reasons for that, first is, the disk you have may be for booting from disk only and not a full installation one, other Ubuntu users may know better on that score. The other reason may be the hard drive has failed, I assume it was working OK previously to trying to install Ubuntu? Nev. -
Help needed for 'Confused'
Plastic Nev replied to Mokles's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Mokles, For those transfer cables to work, both computers must be fully working as the software needs to be installed on both. In your case forget trying one as the old machine doesn't work. The cable or adapter for USB that Ken mentions is all you need, no need for a case or anything else, you just fit the connectors to the drive and providing the drive will run at all, then it should work as Ken says. If however, the drive shows in my computer, but will not allow access to the data there is a trick that can sometimes make the drive work for a short time, and that is to put the drive in the freezer for about half an hour. Don't laugh, it has been proven to work in some cases. If however the drive doesn't show up in "My computer" I am afraid it may need expensive data retrieval by a specialist company, it depends on how much the data is worth to you at that point. Let us know if it comes to that, and we may be able to find you a link to one of those specialists. Nev. -

Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Fairy Princess. If there is anything you need help with, please don't hesitate to ask, there is no such thing as a silly question if you need help with it. Nev. -
The Band Darwen Brass, which I play second cornet with, entered the Whit Friday Marches contests. This series of contests takes place every year around the Tameside and Saddleworth areas. We entered at seven various venues, gaining four first prizes and at least one second with our piece. Here we are playing a contest march called Knight Templar, by Geo Allan.

XP reinstall from recovery disc
Plastic Nev replied to fsyozabil's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, are you using or trying to use the operating system that will be on the hard drive from your old computer, but it is refusing to work as it is seeing a new environment? If so, and you have a full Windows XP disk, you can perform a repair. That should then get it running. You may of course have to buy a full Windows XP disk. Let us know whichever way you are trying please. Nev. -
firefox copying history between portable setups?
Plastic Nev replied to aaaach's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I am not too sure, but as far as I can see it isn't possible. Histories are not like bookmarks which can be backed up and stored in another or new folder for use or copying to elsewhere. Sorry but unless someone else knows differently it is just the way Firefox works. -
Can't burn CD's anymore!!!!
Plastic Nev replied to cluelessincanada's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I would definitely complain, and if you can get an independent technician to verify that the drive is broken, and that disk did indeed do the damage, I would put in a claim for costs incurred as well. Nev. -
Why is there almost no discussion about fax software?
Plastic Nev replied to lili's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Just to add, FAX is mainly a business user thing, not many people use FAX for personal uses when E Mail does the job. Generally speaking FAX was developed as a means of sending printed documents over the ordinary telephone network, prior to the personal computer boom and broadband, so virtually no use for FAX for personal stuff these days. It is old technology now when all is said and done. Nev. -
Kinda late here, but glad you had a good one. Nev.

Can not eject my cd drive
Plastic Nev replied to joefarah's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Is the eject key a different colour? if so it may need the FN key to be pressed at the same time. Do you have the user manual that should have been with it when new? Plus also has the key worked OK previously? If the latter, it may be the key itself has stopped working and would possibly require a new keyboard fitting. Nev. -
Can't burn CD's anymore!!!!
Plastic Nev replied to cluelessincanada's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, I am assuming that the writer is a separate drive from the CD ROM and not the same piece of hardware? If so, and considering it is refusing to accept attempts to install drivers for it, I am now suspecting that damaged and cracked CD for the printer may just have destroyed the read write heads. If so then the only cure is a new drive. Nev. -
You can of course do as suggested and check temperatures while in BIOS, however, Windows will not be active and running, neither will many other processes. However downloading and installing Speedfan as JB suggested, and it will run while Windows is fully loaded and all normal processes are running. Thereby giving you a better idea of what is happening to temperatures while the machine is under some load. Nev.

I would like to thank DSTM (Dougie) for making me aware of this. Most modern photocopiers have a hard drive that stores every document or picture copied, this means that when the machine becomes redundant or is replaced and the old one sold on the second hand market, any sensitive documents can be obtained from them. More here- Copy Machines, a Security Risk? - CBS News Video If your doctor, insurance company, or even the police sell on their old copier without doing something about removing that data, your personal details are at risk of falling into criminal hands. XP SP2 Dies in 2 Months - July 13, 2010
Plastic Nev replied to Starbuck's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Although the support will finish, in other words there will be no further updates or system patches issued for XP SP2, it doesn't mean it will stop working. If anyone wants to stay with using XP SP2 without installing the upgrade to SP3, Then we do recommend making sure you have good security installed if you wish to continue using XP SP2 on line after the closing date. We will give advice about which security to install if asked. Nev. -
Hi and welcome from me. It may be different but it is a lot better than some I have seen. Usually the names the porno spammers use can be a lot worse.:D

PANASONIC PLASMA TV HELP?
Plastic Nev replied to dazzac1965's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I think I mentioned earlier that I have a Panasonic SD camcorder. It does take ordinary pictures as well as video. I can confirm the pictures are in ordinary jpeg format so obviously no problem then with pictures as you said earlier. However, the video files do have some strange extensions on them, and to be quite honest I cannot get good quality video without using the Panasonic Motion Studio software that came with the camcorder. I doubt that there will be any software available that can add those extensions so that your card reader will work on them. I don't see anything mentioned in that video converter I gave you the link for either, which is a pity as it is such a great little converter program. Nev. -
Nice heads up JB about poor service from one of the many ISPs there are. I have a different and much happier story concerning the ISP I use, Supanet. They kindly rang me last week to inform me the contract would soon close and would I like to renew, all at the same rate, as I have been what the guy said a "Loyal customer" great news as their current offering for a new customer is a good few ££ more for the same service I have. I mentioned I would soon be upgrading with a new computer and as I understood it the ADSL modem I was using will not work with Windows 7. I was told that the router they could send would normally cost about £40. whereas again because I am a "Loyal customer" I can have it for £20. (they only ship them out free to new customers, it is covered by the signing on fee!!) So the new router turned up yesterday, and I spent a few minutes connecting it, it does have wireless but I am not using it as the cables and router are all together, with my laptop by the side of the desktop, wireless seemed a bit daft. I now have my laptop networked to the desktop, can have both on line at once, and of course transfer different bits and files between the two a lot easier than with the old pen drive.

Linkin, got in before me, but if you read through the description on that site you will see that even this program isn't going to do very much for you. As I say, there are some crude attempts around, but there is as yet no real way to convert ordinary music into a true MIDI file that can reproduce the music exactly as you heard it. I would also like to add, there are many websites offering music in MIDI format, you can download them, then using notational software, take the entire file to bits, alter it, or just play it as it stands. There is also a lot of notational software both paid for or free, available that you can write your own music in as well as play it. Nev.

Hi Dazzac, well first off, it isn't yet possible to convert a music file into MIDI, at least not correctly. Many programmers and program constructors have tried, and some very crude programs do exist, but they will at the very best only work with converting one instrument being played on its own, and not very well at that. To understand why you need to understand exactly what MIDI is and the major differences between Midi and a music file. MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is actually a set of instructions and not a true music file. What that means is that for example, a piano or portable keyboard creates musical sounds from a bank of digital sounds, known as a sound font, these have been taken and sampled from a real instrument or an electronic synthesiser and then compiled into a kind of library, the keys selected and also the instrument sound selected then produce each note as the key is pressed down, which then sound through the keyboards speakers. However, the MIDI output from the keyboard, is all the instructions needed for another bank of sounds to recreate them and play them elsewhere. In this case the computer, as most sound cards and indeed on board sound systems all have a full if basic sound sound font installed. In order for a program to create a MIDI file from a MP3 file for example, the program first must be able to recognise each individual instrument being played in that sound file. It must then measure exactly how long each note from each instrument has been played for, also how loudly, when sounds are mixed together as they are in real life, you hopefully can see how difficult a task it can be and why it as yet hasn't been done. If you want to know more about the uses of MIDI, the programs that are available for handling it, and able to give a full and real page of musical notation, in other words showing the crotchets, quavers, minims, etc all on the musical stave in front of you while a MIDI file is being played, let me know. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I didn't think I would ever get the chance to suggest this, however it has been proved to work in some cases. That is to freeze the drive, first wrap it in a polythene bag to prevent moisture building up in the drive, then pop it into the freezer, once fully chilled say for about half an hour to an hour, as quickly as you can connect it back to the reader or adapter, power it up and see if you can open it for long enough to retrieve your data. If the freezing method doesn't work, then I am afraid the only way to get the data is quite expensive recovery specialists. Nev.

TRANSFERING CAMCORDER DVD DISCS TO DVD
Plastic Nev replied to layler's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, if what you mean is to copy the file from the mini disk onto your computer, then burn a multiple of these mini disk files to a full size DVD disk, then you will need some form of ripper/burner software. There is fortunately quite a lot of freeware available that can do this. Here is a ripper program that at least will be a start, so you can take the file onboard your computer. DVDSmith Movie Backup: DVD Decrypter to copy DVD movie to computer hard drive, and remove all the CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS protections This is a freeware application that you can download and install. It is quite good and I have used it to rip a video from a friends DVD disk. Next you you should be able to then burn it to a normal full size disk with a burning program, Nero is popular but expensive and quite heavy in resources use. There are other and some free programs available. Try this if you like, though I haven't as yet, so cannot vouch for how well it works. free dvd copy cd dvd burner audio data shrink dvd - burn4free freeware Most modern full size DVD rewrite drives will take the mini disk as well, though you may also have a cable to transfer from the camera direct which could save the need for a ripper program. It depends a lot on what the output file type is from the camera. Nev.
