Hi Jim, as well as the above, I recently learned something today that just might be of relevance and is tied to TLS, (Transport Layer Security) that is a system that replaced SSL, (Secure Socket Layer) A lot of Youtube video's are running in secure mode, you can see that in the URL, it shows as HTTPS. so it might be relevant. Open Internet Explorer, then click on tools > Options, > the advanced tab, scroll down to TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, TLS 1.2. Make sure there is a tick in the box next to each one. Let us know what you find there please. Nev.

Hi Jim, your Adobe flash player may be out of date. Right click on the video that has no sound, then select "About Adobe Flash player" which should also have 15.0.0.223 after it, if a lower number than that, then you will find yourself on a page recommending you update to the latest version. Let us know. Nev.

[ Solved ]Sata to Pata Adapter.
Plastic Nev replied to Bringe's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Bringe, Firstly I am glad the adapter worked OK, however the data loss may be because of the attempts to try the unsuccessful recovery or repair. As far as a file recovery program there is one called "Recuva" but sometimes seems not very good. Strangely enough Ken helped another member who had lost some files and other data accidentally and recommended a free file recovery software called Puran File Recovery v1.2 from here :- http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/fl/puran-file-recovery-review.htm The thread for that one is here and worth a read through first, especially Kens instructions. http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/16556-I-deleted-all-my-photos-on-my-computer-how-do-I-restore-them#.VGzqo8lXum0 In your case, you may be able to move recovered files onto the computer rather than having to try and save them to a flash drive, however give it a try and see how you get on. [ Solved ]Sata to Pata Adapter.
Plastic Nev replied to Bringe's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Just to recover data, you can get adapters for IDE to USB connection, saving having to actually go into the other computer to connect it, as well as the type shown in Kens link. Just have a look round the Amazon site that Ken linked to. Let's hope that the hard drive itself is OK enough to do so and not the reason for the fault. Nev. -
[Solved] SM Bus controller help please
Plastic Nev replied to mumblebee's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Indeed strange readings, the BIOS just might show differently, but the actual check with a meter is possibly the only real way to be sure. I would also include a check of the CMOS battery as that shows as a lot too low as well. Nev. -

Nice looking instrument Pete, next thing we want is a recording of you playing it. I know what you mean about the finger tips, I would be the same if I got my old cheapo Hohner restrung and tried getting back into playing it. Nev. -
[Solved] SM Bus controller help please
Plastic Nev replied to mumblebee's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, Now you have the correct drivers installed, you won't see the "Other devices" as now there is no problem, device manager has nothing to report. In other words, previously it knew something was wrong, but without the drivers it didn't know what! At least the original problem has been cured. I see the voltages are still showing low, however if they actually were that low, it would be giving a lot of problems, so it just might be a wrong reading from Speccy, so lets see what two other analysing softwares show us. Please download and install Speedfan from here :- http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php Also download and install CPUID monitor from here :- http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/1.25-setup.exe If you can post screen shots from those two it will hopefully tell us Speccy might be wrong, as sometimes it can be with voltages. Also, although you don't use Internet Explorer it should be updated due to the security risk. However now you do have Windows updates working, you may find the next updates might rectify that, if it doesn't it can be downloaded from the Microsoft site any way. Nev. -
[Solved] SM Bus controller help please
Plastic Nev replied to mumblebee's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, Ken has said to me, there is a chance that the missing drivers may be the reason for it reporting the low voltages, so once you have them installed and providing they work we will ask for a new Speccy report then. Best of luck and lets hope those drivers do the job for you. Nev. -
[Solved] SM Bus controller help please
Plastic Nev replied to mumblebee's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, please first get those drivers installed from the links KenB gave and lets get the system working correctly. After doing that, The Speccy link is quite informative for us and gives us information of further help. I see that windows updates are turned off and the last set of updates was the 18th of last month. Also you are still running Internet explorer 9. Is there a reason for this, and if a problem with it we can possibly help sort that out, if it isn't connected to the fact the drivers you need are missing. Ideally for security your updates should be at least turned on to a manual setting so you can see when updates are available and allow the download and install. Also for security reasons you should also update Internet explorer to version 11. Next thing is although I am not familiar with the AVG anti virus, does that have a firewall built in? If not you should really have a firewall installed. After that and scrolling down to near the bottom, the voltages are of a little concern, the 12 volt is only showing 8.88 volts, and also the CMOS battery, is only 1.608 volts, it should be near or exactly 3.00 volts. So the small coin battery should ideally be renewed. If you need any help sorting those things out please let us know as that low voltage for the 12 volts may be sign the power supply is struggling, add to that the low CMOS voltage due to the small on board battery going flat, will soon give you other problems. [Solved] SM Bus controller help please
Plastic Nev replied to mumblebee's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, further to Kens advice, if you open Speccy again, then click on "File" at the top right, then "Publish snapshot". In the next box click "Yes", you will then get a URL address, copy and then paste that into your next reply please. From that we should be able to see all the model number details we may need. Just so you know there are no personal details given, only information about your system, here is the similar URL for my own rather basic Packard Bell machine. http://speccy.piriform.com/results/qqnlJGqTGy0LAkdY1EZWlYf Nev. -
[ Solved ] W7 system severely mucked up
Plastic Nev replied to mij's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
That's sounding good Jim, any problems with the drivers? Give us a shout if there are as sometimes Windows itself might not have them. Usually for specific devices such as sound or wifi devices. Otherwise glad to know all is OK and went well. Nev. -
OK George, will ask an administrator to look into it for you. Also asked about the problem you are having with the TV, and sorry, but we do think that the only possible cause could be that the TV is causing some sort of overload on the video signal, though how that is happening we can't say. Nev.
-
That is the puzzle George, I cannot see any reason at all why it should influence the computer in any way if it is a desktop, it just shouldn't happen. The only thing I can possibly suggest is that in some way the demand on the video signal from the TV is overloading something, though it is the first time I have heard of it. As for names, there are yourself "georgeriley139", plain "georgeriley", and "curiousgeorge" registered, those three names all trace to Shefield, and can't help but think it is all the same person. If it is, and each has been registered for odd reasons on your end, let us know and we can merge the accounts or delete two of them, whichever you want. The reason for this is because it is actually in the forum rules, rule number 8, here :- http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/11463-New-to-Free-PC-Help-Forum-Rules#.VGEqhslKTE5 We don't normally enforce it as it is understood that sometimes a member can forget that he or she may have registered once before some time previously and then comes back with a slightly different user name, but is actually the same person. Once it has been cleared up then the accounts can be merged or one or more deleted. Please let us know if those user names are all yours, or indeed there is a few different georgeriley's around and we can sort things out from there. In the mean time I will ask the other tech's if they have any idea as to why the TV is making these odd changes. Nev.

Hi George, (I wish you would stick with just one name) A couple of questions, is this using a desktop or a laptop computer? If you are using a desktop, then nothing can get back into the computer if using VGA and a separate sound cable, however if a laptop and then setting the laptop to use an external monitor which settings are you using?

This time a decided on a glass of rose wine, so asked the mirror to provide it. http://i74.servimg.com/u/f74/14/68/69/96/mirror10.jpg Nev.

[ Solved ] W7 system severely mucked up
Plastic Nev replied to mij's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Jim, That actually is fine as it is a full OEM Windows 7 home premium and looks to be a brand new one. I just wish she hadn't gone off and bought it as there really was no need, KenB in an earlier post mentioned it. However the disk is there now so it might as well be used. To save me some typing, Brink has done it for us, have a look here, Clean install Windows 7 You may have to access the BIOS and make sure the DVD/CD drive is set to first boot priority. See how you go and if any problems, let us know. Nev. -
How to check hard drive health please?
Plastic Nev replied to AuraTodd's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, Donna has already answered your question here :- http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/344860-how-to-check-har-drive-health-please/ You can either continue there and I will keep an eye on how that goes and possibly contribute if required. Or we can continue here, but please keep it to one place or the other to save confusing advice being given. Nev. -

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 - slow - freezing
Plastic Nev replied to farghi's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, sorry there has been no reply till now, and unfortunately I know nothing about them, as it seems no one else here knows much about that Android system either, so perhaps a contact with Samsung or a local dealer may be the way forward for you unless someone can step in here. Nev. -
Upgrade or Replace? Help needed!
Plastic Nev replied to Bonyman's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
If in or near a larger town or city, take the time to browse any computer shops, many of the smaller dealers and repair specialists are now selling used and refurbished second hand Windows 7 computers, some quite good machines at reasonable prices too. Even these places that are the next thing to a pawnbroker second hand shops are worth looking into if only to get a good idea of prices. Don't just assume you will have to buy something brand new, as some second hand refurbished machines might not have seen much use, possibly why they were sold. Nev. -
[ Solved ] W7 system severely mucked up
Plastic Nev replied to mij's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Some slight confusion about sales of Windows 7 rather than support perhaps. It seems that Microsoft stopped sales of retail versions of Windows 7 last year, and have now cut off supply of OEM versions to the computer manufacturers on Friday just gone, the end of October 2014. More here about that. http://www.networkworld.com/article/2839479/microsoft-subnet/windows-7-sales-end-this-friday.html If requiring a new copy of Windows 7 license, you might get lucky with some retailers still having a few in stock, otherwise it will mean waiting till next year when Windows 10 is released. I wouldn't bother with Windows 8 in any of its forms. -
Upgrade or Replace? Help needed!
Plastic Nev replied to Bonyman's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, further to KenB's advice. If you wish to upgrade to Windows 7, which is now at service pack 1, you will have to be quick to buy a copy from a retailer, as Microsoft have now stopped selling it themselves, so any remaining copies will be through retail outlets and no doubt will soon dry up. Please make sure you buy a genuine copy and not a hacked version, which some unscrupulous people sell on E Bay. Any hacked version we cannot offer any help with other than advising how to get rid of it. Nev.
