  1. Hi Rootman, how much RAM was in at first and in how many sticks? Try removing all the sticks, the old and the new, then one by one try a stick at a time. At least the old ones should work, and this will tell us if any of the new ones are duff. It does happen. Also can you tell us The model and make of the computer, plus the same about the mother board, and all the sticks of ram, make and type will be a great help in finding if the mother board can cope with that amount in the first place. Nev.
  2. OK Thanks for that, let's see if the drivers need updating. While still in device manager, double click on the drive that is giving the trouble, this will open the properties window of that drive. Click on the driver tab, then click the "update driver". A quicker way is to right click on the faulty drive then select "Update driver" from there. See if that helps. Let us know if any difficulties. Nev.
  3. I know this is for general photography, but this is about taking a picture and then using any one of the many photo handling programs to enhance the original scene. Here I have taken a nice shot of a good old duck, (yes I am a bit quackers I know!!!) First off I removed the shadow and the bits of debris, using the cloning tool using bits of the shot of the same shade but clean. Next I mirror imaged the duck and sat them side by side, a bit more manipulation of the shadow and finished with the last shot.
  4. Hi again, Thanks for the information it will help later, but I am afraid Fujitsu Seimens are terrible for technical help. OK, we need first to go into device manager and check if there are any exclamation marks (in yellow) or crosses (in red). To get to device manager the quick way- Click "Start" then "Run". In the box type- devmgmt.msc Then click OK. you will see a list of all devices. Look for DVD/CD ROM Drives, on the left it may have a + in a small box, click on that and it should show the two drives you have, are there any ! or X marks in red or yellow? If so is it both or just one, and which one? Nev.
  5. OK, I am hoping that Nikon vew 4 thing has nothing to do with what is wrong. Originally you said you had two drives, the one you tried that shuts everything down, plus another that will accept a disc but not play it. What types are they? is one a CD read/ writer and the other a DVD read only or ROM for example? I now suspect there is a driver error or conflict. There is also the possibility of the disc drive itself being duff, but we will try the drivers side first. To be able to find drivers on the net though we need some information, make of computer and model name or number, and if possible the make and model number of the drive itself. Plus of course the types of the drives you have. Nev.
  6. Just to add, that I ran a full scan with SAS and it took just over one and three quarter hours is all, and for the stuff I have on here it is what I expected. I reckon you must have something wrong with the original version of SAS, so a reinstall should cure it. Nev.
  7. Hi and welcome to Free PC help, Have you downloaded or installed anything prior to this fault? Considering you say that it runs OK in safe mode it may be a conflict in some software that is not loaded in safe mode. Nev.
  8. This seems strange, I can only assume there is something wrong with that monitor installation disk so perhaps taking or at least sending it back to the retailer is my recommendation. I think maybe a crossed wire on the log aspect, Wolfey was right, we don't normally ask for any logs, but in this case I asked in case there was anything out of the ordinary.
  9. OH, Did I hear my name mentioned? Hello Vflyer and welcome. I hope indeed we can get our heads together regarding the music side at some point. I myself am still learning (a never ending process :) ) However I use Finale more than anything else, but do have Sibelius, as well as one or two other either cheaper or free programs as well as some sequencing stuff. All good fun :) Nev.
  10. Hi again, there were two pretty nasty rogues there hopefully now gone. The Malwarebytes and the Superantispyware programs I recommend you keep now and use them regularly as well as the AVG, though we now recommend other anti virus software instead of AVG. Have a look at our list here- http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/3597-free-pc-help-recommended-security-products.html Only a matter of personal preference here but I use Avast. I have the Comodo firewall and of course the two previously mentioned Malwarebytes and SAS. as well as the Spywareblaster. Try your disk drives now and see if it will run OK. If not, there are more things for us to look at and try yet. Nev.
  11. Hi mate. I can only suggest the simple uninstall totally then go back to the SAS site and download and reinstall. If you have Revo uninstaller or similar, I would recommend using that to make sure all remnants are off your system before downloading and reinstalling the new version. I am running a full scan now in the background, It needed doing! :) So will post later how long it took for my version to run. Nev.
  12. Hi Dunnsdale, no problem, Just highlite it with the curser or mouse pointer, right click on it then choose copy, open a reply box, write what you need to introduce it, then another right click and choose paste. Hope that helps, Nev.
  13. Hi, I will also add that Acronis quite often release older versions of their software as available free, but usually as a deal with either computer magazines, or as in the latest, a deal with a drive manufacturer. The latest deal is with Seagate, or Maxtor, the drive manufacturers, if you own one of their drives, either internal or external it will work for you. Have a look here- DiscWizard | Seagate Nev.
  14. Hi, to stay with the malware side first as suggested by Danzil, it may be the cause. AVG on its own is not really enough protection any way so have a go at our procedure, if followed exactly it usually gets shut of most problems. Can you also make sure you post the log from Malwarebytes for us to look at too. Your computer appears to be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. It is in your best interest to note the following: Please disable your resident security applications (such as AVG, Spybot, WinPatrol, etc.) before performing the below procedure so that they do not interfere with the process. Perform all the steps in the order listed to avoid any conflicts. If unsure, please stop and voice your doubts. You might be required to go offline during the disinfection process. Therefore, it is recommended to print off the instructions below for ease of reference. If you stick to the above guidelines, all should go smoothly. ================================================ STEP 1 Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click on the file to run the program. On the Main tab, check the Select All button. Next, click on the Firefox tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Firefox, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Now, click on the Opera tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Opera, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Press the Empty Selected button and click OK to acknowledge the corresponding prompt. Click on the Exit button to quit the program. ================================================ STEP 2 Please click here to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Save the file to your Desktop. [*]The program will download and update itself if it finds the necessity to do so. Please allow this. [*]Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. Note: Depending on your computer specifications, the scan may take some time to complete. Please wait patiently and do not interrupt the process. [*]When the scan is complete, click OK, and then Show Results to view the results. [*]Make sure that every entry is selected, and click Remove Selected. [*]Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 3 Please click here to download SUPERAntiSpyware (Free Version). Save the file to your Desktop. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select the Run As Administrator option in the shell context menu. Check mark the YES, I accept the Terms of Use box. Click the Start button. Click the Install button on the following screen. Click Start. This will will initialize and update the scanner engine. Check mark the box beside Remove found threats. Click the Scan button. This will start the scan. Please be patient while it is in progress. Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 5 Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and select System Restore. Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen and click Next. Give the restore point a name then click Create. The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a note of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Next, click on Start > Run, type Cleanmgr and click on OK. Click on the More Options tab. Click the Clean Up button in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the most recent one. This will remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in "System Restore" are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only foolproof way to ensure the deletion of those files. Note: Do not clear restore points on a regular basis as doing so will clear all previous restore points even those that you may need. System Restore is a useful tool to revert your computer back to a working condition if something goes wrong. Re-enable all your security applications and please return here and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. Happy Safe Computing! 15. Hi Samuria, I tried to answer this question, here- http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/windows-7/7260-windows-7-and-no-browser.html However of course, not a lot of use for someone who has never had a computer beforehand! In a case like that, should it arise, I can only suggest that a Browser can be acquired from a friend or other persons computer. Hopefully though most manufacturers will include a browser when they install Windows 7 at the factory.
  16. I totally agree, welcome Samuria.
  17. Humm, Hi Yvonne, That is a strange one. This is, or may only be, a work round for now till we get to the bottom of this problem. Have you tried a copy and paste of the contents of the E Mail to a word doc, then tried to print that? Let us know the outcome as it may hold a clue for someone else to work from.
  18. Another good wind up to stop fan noise would be disconnect them all, then feed in a small volume of gas from a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher with the horn removed. However, I have not yet tested dry ice for electrical insulation value yet. But it would sure keep things cool.
  19. Hi again Wizard, I will leave you in the capable hands of our Maynard for now. However there may be a now well known glitch in service pack 3 stopping you installing the new drivers. It may mean uninstalling service pack 3 first. However Maynard will know about that, and will advise accordingly perhaps later.
  20. Hi Wizard, we could do with the model name or number, Fujitsu Siemens made quite a few different models some quite different from others. Secondly we will do our best, but this manufacturer does not give very much in the way of technical information or support, so we may be struggling here. Third, do you know if service pack 3 for Windows is installed? You should see this in the general tab of System properties, it will give you Microsoft Windows XP and what version, then under that the service pack number, 1, 2, or 3. If it shows as service pack 2, please do not update to service pack 3 yet, till we sort out drivers if needed. next is go back to the Hardware tab in System Properties, is there a + in a square box on the left of "Multimedia Audio Controller"? if so please click on that square, it should open a list of the devices installed, and which one or ones have the yellow ! mark, let us know which ones please as well as the above.
  21. Hi again, OK we can rule out the PSU I hope if you can get as far as the BIOS, However I am puzzled about "I can confirm that I tried the drive in an external IDE device that allowed me to attach it as removable storage to my laptop. It sounds like the arm in the HDD was not engaging properly" Do you mean there were clicking or knocking noises coming from the hard drive when you had it connected to the laptop? Could you access or see any of the files, do you have access to any partitions and what they contain, or even whether it was set for FAT or NTFS file types while it was connected? I am suspicious that the hard drive is duff, which would account for all your problems. Is it brand new or a second hand unit? If new I would take it back and ask for it to be checked, or replacement of it. Nev.
  22. The first and the answer are hilarious, and I do hope that person was put straight about it. The second concerning water cooling I have seen that before of course. However if the person who did that had been a little (but not a lot) wiser, they would have used a different liquid. Transformer oil comes to mind, that is an extremely high voltage insulating liquid and used for heat transfer in the national grid transformers that bring the 500,000 Volts of the super grid down to our domestic 240 Volts. Even so, I doubt if the computer would have worked all that well, I can't see a hard drive disk spinning at the normal speeds when immersed in that stuff.
  23. Yes I do remember seeing that advertised Ken, but not actually seeing any one with the set or bricks. Of course it soon went out of fashion when the Lego system first came out. That is a toy with stamina, as it is still going strong. And a great shame the original Mecano and Hornby companies are now long since gone.
  24. Hi marie, I have just tried the profile lookup on one or two friends of mine and the page opened but did take a while, maybe as much as two minutes. However I am using Firefox, and the latest messenger works directly with Firefox now providing Firefox is set as the default Browser. Have you also considered updating Internet explorer to version 8 as you say you are still using version 7? That might cure the problem for you. Other wise if you haven't tried Firefox as a browser why not give it a go and see if it works in that as it does in mine. Nev.
  25. I remember the old "tank" with a cotton reel too, another home made thing was a disk or large button spinner. A length of string was tied into a loop so the loop would be about a foot and a half long. The string was threaded through either two holes in a large button, or a cardboard disk so the disk or button was in the middle of the loop. To start things you turned the disk so the string loop twisted by a few turns, then gripped, usually with a finger, through the two ends and pulled them apart. The twist would unwind therefore spinning the disk, release the pull as the twist unwound so it wound up in the opposite direction, then pull again, the disk would go spinning round faster and faster. If holes were cut in the right way in the disk it would whistle as it spun.
