Just a final point, if the DVD drive is only six months old, it may still be under warranty, so send it back and see how you go from there.

Hi Glad it is sorted, I saw from one of your earlier replies that you had re-installed Windows XP. With separate sound cards, you usually do have to re-install the drivers after a re-install of the OS. However I have been away, so every one else beat me to it.:D

[Shutdown] Existing Build
Plastic Nev replied to zerosedge's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, I think you said you have another computer, if the PSU is similar size in wattage, could you swap? this would at least narrow down if it is the PSU. -
Nod32 is of course the full suite but will cost you a few pence short of £40-00 per year or for 3 years will cost a little less than £84-00, however using all free software such as Comodo firewall, Avast antivirus, MBAM antimalware, SAS, and SpywareBlaster, although separate software rather than an all in one, I feel I have enough protection for free. I can of course donate any amount to the vendors in appreciation of their free ware. For someone of limited means, even I don't get paid a tremendous amount, free ware is perhaps the way to go. Another thing is that for a year or two I was being ripped off in a sense, by paying out to Symantec for their Norton Internet security. I now know better, it became extremely bloated, plus all the stuff it was doing in the background, was slowing things down a little too. All for so called security software that let in all sorts of basic rubbish, tracking cookies and the like, so I still needed things such as those mentioned above, to keep a clean ship. Once bitten, twice shy.

Hi, first of all, a warm welcome to you from me, and a question or two. Can you tell us the make and model of your computer, and is it an on board sound system, or a sound card plugged in to a PCI slot, if so what make and model? Has the sound worked previously? and when did it stop working, had you installed a new program or any thing else that may have turned it off. Answers to those will help us to go further.
-
Hi and welcome, it is beginning to look like a duff CD drive. Any chance of borrowing one from a friend to try in its place, if it works that will prove the point. If another drive doesn't work it will also prove there may be a software issue.

Hi Beamo, is your sound system a separate sound card, or is it part of the system mother board? Whichever it is, let us know the type and any information on it. Have you had a look at properties? any exclamation marks?

Hi Frank, just as a last resort, try gently rubbing the contact surface on the old cartridges with a double type pencil/pen eraser, using the slightly abrasive bit for pen erasing. Just in case the contacts have become coated in a thin layer of oxide. Be careful not to put too much pressure on, as the insulated bit will be rubbed off.

Rememberance and Veterans Day
Plastic Nev replied to RandyL's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
That is a beautiful song and is a splendid tribute to those who have fought for our freedom. As I play cornet in a local brass band, I also will be taking part in a remembrance march on Sunday 9th November. For those interested in brass band music, my band- DARWEN BRASS - Home We will be taking part in a parade to the church for a remembrance service, then a short march to the cenotaph for the laying of the wreath, accompanied by one of our members playing the last post and reveille. -
There are some beauties in that list, if I suffered this one= Agateophobia- Fear of insanity. Do you think it might drive me insane? and who thought this mouthful up for this= Sesquipedalophobia- Fear of long words. A shorter word would have done. But this one will do for me= Thanatophobia or Thantophobia- Fear of death or dying. Are we all suffering this one?

An old one, but the added bit at the bottom is new, (well it is to me) Windshield tester It seems the US Federal Aviation Administration has a unique device for testing the strength of windshields on airplanes. The device is a gun that launches a dead chicken at a plane's windshield at approximately the speed the plane flies. The theory is that if the windshield doesn't crack from the carcass impact, it'll survive a real collision with a bird during flight. It seems the British were very interested in this and wanted to test a windshield on a brand new, speedy locomotive they're developing. They borrowed FAA's chicken launcher, loaded the chicken and fired. The ballistic chicken shattered the windshield, broke the engineer's chair and embedded itself in the back wall of the engine cab. The Britsh were stunned and asked the FAA to recheck the test to see if everything was done correctly. The FAA reviewed the test thoroughly and had one recommendation: Next time, defrost the chicken. One person who used to work for British Aerospace tells a similar story (which he swears is true), that these machines are actually used to fire chickens into jet engines to simulate birdstrikes on the compressor blades. To thaw the chicken, someone left it in the gun overnight and performed the test in the morning. The results were somewhat different from the expected, and close examination of the high speed video footage showed a very startled-looking stray cat clinging to a half-eaten chicken as it exited the gun at Mach 0.7.

This guy was lonely and so he decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. He went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion he finally bought a centipede, which came in a little white box to use for his house. He took the box home, found a good location for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to the pub for a drink. So he asked the centipede in the box, 'Would you like to go to Frank's place with me and have a beer?' Silence; there was no answer from his new Pet. This bothered him a bit, waited a few minutes and then asked him again 'How about going to the bar and having a beer with me?' Again there was no answer, nothing but silence came from his new friend and pet. So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation. He decided to ask him one more time. This time putting his face up against the centipede's house and shouting, 'Hey, in there! Would you like to go to Frank's place and have a beer with me? A little voice came out of the box: 'I heard you the first time! I'm putting my shoes on!'

I had to vote, "depends on what software is on it" Because I already have that much free stuff already, it would be pointless sending the postage for a CD with everything I already have.;)

Not guilty this time, it was RandyL who pointed him to the Nero cleaning tool. Glad that sorted the problem gunslinger. Though Revo is a good tool on its own, if any one is using it, the latest version is 1.75. As I found recently my version was a bit old, so when I opened it there was a notification of updates.

How old do we want to go? I have a still working all valved Eddystone general coverage receiver. It will receive radio signals from 450 Kc/s (KHZ) right up to 32Mc/s (MHZ) in four bands. For resolving side band and Morse transmissions it has a BFO or beat frequency oscillator. I also have a Philips ,long wave, medium wave and VHF FM receiver, again still working and built for the domestic market, and again all valves. None of these silly fiddly transistor three legged fuses. But the real technology is the Yeasu 7B five band short wave transeiver, plus a yeasu 250 R 2 meter transeiver, and one or two other home built odds and sods as well, no point in having the G4TMY after my name without the gear to go with it. Oh and my last TV was so old the remote control was my pool or snooker cue to push in the buttons on the front.:D

Nothing like real life to throw up some good funny moments, I had to wipe my screen after seeing "Sorry, had to mow the lawn". not to mention "My name is Dixie". Mustn't drink coffee when reading jokes in future.:D

Not to mention all the other advances proposed by various manufacturers by then. Solid state hard drives, based on a new magnetic principle, so no spinning disks. True touch screen technology, so no mouse any more. CPU's based on a different technology all together, that won't even get warm, no need for all those whirring fans. Who knows what else may be in production in four years time?

Cleaning the insides of your PC
Plastic Nev replied to mike's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Back to vacuum cleaners and compressors, the chance of a static charge from either are well known. However there is also the rare chance of a vacuum sucking a component off the board. With all air compressors water can build up due to condensation in the pipeline and or receiver, this happens because compressing air heats it, once in the receiver or pipeline it cools and condensation forms. Plus also a large industrial compressor is likely to compress the air to around 100PSI, so without some form of pressure regulator/reducer, the blast could blow components off the board. I stick to a soft, dry, long bristled brush, and perhaps a blow from a hair drier on cold air. -
You can also try Revo Uninstaller if you haven't already got it. It can quite often remove the awkward programs such as yours where files are missing. Download Revo from here- Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Uninstall, Remove Programs, Solve uninstall problems

Although on the issue of passwords in general, it is not usually something that advice can be given on, (for various reasons, see rule 5) I feel some general knowledge may be helpful with regard to web based activities that require passwords for access. As a for instance, a question was asked about Windows live messenger. As far as I am aware, all information such as contact lists, E mail and other documents, are stored on the MSN or Windows live servers, none of which is ever downloaded to your own machine unless you do so deliberately by copy and paste or other means. Therefore if you lose or forget your Windows live or MSN password, and have also lost your other details such as user name or hotmail address, it is lost for good. However if only your password is lost all you need do is click the "Forgot your password?" on the sign in box, then make sure your other details are entered correctly, a new password will be issued. The "Forgotten password" option is true for a lot of other web based applications, most notably forums, such as this one, and many others. Providing you do still know your other details such as user name E mail address etc, then all it takes is a click of the mouse on the "Forgotten your password?" option, just follow the instructions given, and quite often a replacement password will be issued fairly soon. As is also the case, these passwords can usually then be altered to something you may be more familiar with, once you have used the new password to gain your access.

And just a final note on the subject, Take the laptop you were given to one of your local computer repair shops, not just a dealer but one of the smaller guys who also does repairs, ask him if it is any use for spare parts, and if so what can he offer. Might as well get something from it eh?;)

I will go with your superior knowledge on AVG Seth, it used to be held in some regard, however I have seen elsewhere too many folk having some weird problems with it in the last year or so, which is why I didn't try it when I dumped Norton, and now use Avast. Time moves on, and some software gets either dated, or too top heavy at each update or new release, making it a poor performer in the end. If Avast goes the same way, then I will go for Avira, providing that hasn't been superseded by then. Any way back to topic, Killid, I hope you have now uninstalled the AVG, and have you seen seen any improvement?

Sound when playing films
Plastic Nev replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, if I can but in without treading on a few toes, sorry if I have, but any way the lead you have there is perfectly OK, the black plug goes into any socket of that type on your computer or sound card, marked with a speaker symbol or "Loud speaker", the red and white each go to left or right speakers, if as you think the left and right are wrong way round it is quite all right to swap them round, doing so will not confuse any thing. Hope that helps. -
Now and again it may be that you need to transfer a file to another machine or even just hold a file elsewhere, the most common device for doing this is the pen or stick drive. However, you may not have one or the one you have is full. There is another way, if you have a digital camera or other device that uses memory cards, and for ease of downloading to the computer you have a card reader, then the problem may be solved. Most card readers will also work in reverse, and allow you to transfer files onto your memory card or cards. Just plug in your reader with an empty card in it, your computer will recognise the device and allocate it, usually as "F" drive. Just transfer your files to the card in the same way as you would to a pen or stick drive. Yes you guessed, I found this out after I bought a pen drive, when I already had four 2GB cards and a reader.
