  1. Hi, it does have to be the original Windows 7 disk and not a manufacturers recovery disk or of the type you burn yourself when acquired from new. Also, it helps if the operating system is with service pack 1 that the disk should also be complete with service pack 1. Though with the past history of bad updates, you might not have been able to get service pack 1 on it. However, here are full instructions for doing a Windows 7 repair. I now see they say you can actually download and burn a disk anyway so long as the download matches your original system. To save me a tremendous amount of typing, have a look here :- http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html If you can follow that, you should then have an operating system that should be able to update correctly. Nev.
  2. Hi, if the Microsoft fixit did not work, and previous to the upgrade you had problems, then it is looking like some corruption within Windows itself. Windows 7 can be repaired by a reinstall without damaging or deleting your data, but it does need the disk. If you haven't got a disk and cannot borrow one, how about the people who did the upgrade for you? Nev.
  3. Like any CD or DVD drive they can be replaced, the unit itself is usually not that expensive, however it depends a lot on what needs to be dismantled in order to remove the old one and fit the new one. Some are easy to do, some require quite a lot of dismantling, it depends on the make and model. If not too happy about doing that yourself, a reputable repair shop shouldn't charge too much, and in fact may even be able to realign the heads if that is all that is wrong with it. f interested in doing it yourself, you may be able to find a repair manual on line which would be a big help. Let us know if wanting to try and we may be able to find a manual. I already know of a very good laptop repair site which could be a start, here :- http://www.laptoprepair101.com/ Have a look at the categories on the right to find relevant information. Nev.
  4. Hi, still don't know if this is a desktop or laptop, if you can let us know please. However it sounds like some slight misalignment of the heads may have happened. It may be the burn or the read head or even both. Laptop drives being so flimsy are well known for it. Unfortunately not something that can be put right at home regardless of whether desktop or laptop, though I have known a tap on the drawer when it's out to help with a laptop drive, but that also risks making it worse too. It may in the end require a new drive fitting to be sure of a full cure though, as I doubt it is any sort of software problem due to it being able to read earlier created disks. Nev.
  5. Hi Woodworker, lets see if it is some part of your Windows or something else. From your description you are seeing what can be called a drop shadow. First open your version of elements, then find a clipart image on Google and drag and drop the image straight into elements. Does it have the drop shadow at that point?. Just so we can see the shadow to be sure that is what we are meaning, Windows 7 has a screen shot snipping tool which you can use to select the area round a picture. Save the whole image and show us that. Snipping tool, if never used before is in "All Programs", then open "Accessories" Which version of Elements do you have by the way as I have both 8 and 11. Nev.
  6. Hi Bazza, first thoughts from your description it may just be a dusty or dirty read or burn head. If you have one, a head cleaner disk may be all it requires, they are not too expensive to buy if you don't have one. Is this a laptop or desktop computer the drive is in? If laptop you can usually see the head when the drive tray is out and clean very gently with a soft small paint brush. Nev.
  7. Hi Chris, Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. This sounds like a user profile corruption which could be down to some damage done by those trojans. Before we look into sorting that out, lets be sure there is no other malware lurking in the background or anything left behind from those trojans. Please have a look at this thread and the instructions, carry them out and then post the results here in this thread. http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/10689-Before-posting-for-Malware-Removal-help-WinXP-Vista-and-Win7#.UpXMuuKyM4c I will alert the malware specialists to look, and later this thread may be moved to the malware forums. Nev.
  8. Hi John, yes I know about that, there is also Speccy which will find the key, however, why look for it on a machine running windows XP when intending to install Windows 7? The key for XP is of no use as it is only relevant to XP, which would be fine if re-installing XP, but Windows 7 must have its own key. Nev.
  9. If the missing number is the XP desktop and you buy a full disk for it, the old XP number is irrelevant as the new disk will come with its own, if multiple license, it comes with a fresh number for each installation. Really it is all about the activation of Windows once it is installed, so each install has to have a different product key number for the activation to work. Have a read of this link, and do follow up the links within it, it best describes what Microsoft mean and how they work the license system. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/get-windows-product-key#get-windows-product-key=windows-7 Now another question pops up, instead of a full windows disk and license, multiple license or other wise, why not obtain two OEM disks, it may be a lot cheaper and is certainly worth thinking about. This article explains a lot and although dated 2009, it is still relevant. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/features/351598/how-to-buy-windows-7-for-50-less-the-truth-about-oem-versions I have just looked on Amazon and OEM versions are available at reasonable prices. Nev.
  10. Hi, if you get upgrade disk for the Vista machine, that will be no problem, however from XP you have to start from scratch with a full W7 disk as a direct upgrade isn't possible. If buying a windows 7 disk you may be able to obtain a multiple license disk which will allow installation to two or more computers, however a single license disk will not. Nev.
  11. Very interesting, the most useful is post number eight on the page linked to from "Mountain Bob". A bit long winded but does explain the reason for the problem and at the end gives a good work round for it. Nev.
  12. A lot catch 22 is that one MH2. One of the other funny ones I have seen as someone's signature, "Warning, Keyboard not Connected, hit any key to continue" Then of course there are many made up supposedly windows error notices. Things along the line of "Windows couldn't find the file specified, would you like a glass of wine instead?" Nev.
  13. Hi Ian, I just tried this website on this link and it worked OK http://activeshooter.co.uk/content/ There are a lot of possible blocks at your end, including, your ISP, your firewall, your antivirus, your browser, or even a hosts file. Firstly try that link I gave, if no good, then providing you are using a modern router which will have its own firewall, try turning off you own software firewall, then antivirus and so on. Also if none of those work, ring your ISP to check they are not blocking the site as well. Nev.
  14. Hi Nick, without that USB card installed, do you get any result with either of the power supplies? Fans starting any lights, or is it completely dead? On the off chance check the fuse in the plug if you have that type and also check by some other appliance the wall socket is still OK. If all that checks out OK, lets just see if a RAM problem, How many sticks of RAM do you have in there, is it two 500MB or one 1GB? Remove them both if two, clean the contacts using a pencil eraser, wipe them with a soft cloth then if there are two, just fit one and try, if still nothing remove that one and try the other. Let us know how you get on with that please. Nev.
  15. Hi Hootch and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. First, I am a little confused when you said you tried the original power supply, does that mean you have two PSU's ? Whichever it is or both, please can you find the rating(s) from the PSU label, somewhere on it it should tell us what the maximum Watts it is rated for. Also what make and model of USB card is it you fitted so we can find some more about it. It is however not looking good for the PSU at the moment, there could be a fault on the USB card which has damaged the PSU. Nev.
  16. Indeed Ken, the old one had got to the point where I was welding new onto last years welds, so it was time to let the scrap man deal with it. Nev.
  17. My latest thing is not computer related at all, but is a very decent second hand Mazda Demio car. Itook it out for a run round Yorkshire and finished up at Pateley Bridge as a part of checking it out and getting used to it. It drives well and handles superbly. http://i55.servimg.com/u/f55/14/68/69/96/mazda_10.jpg http://i55.servimg.com/u/f55/14/68/69/96/mazda_11.jpg http://i55.servimg.com/u/f55/14/68/69/96/mazda_12.jpg
  18. Same here
  19. OK thanks for the update and hope all is now OK. It would still be wise to update the flash player if it isn't up to date, as older versions, though still working OK can be less secure. Nev.
  20. Hi, The first thing to look at is the player, Youtube uses Adobe Flash player and if that is not up to date it could be the reason for out of sync playing, check for the latest version of Flash player and install it from here :- http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ If DVD's or other local video is still out of sync after that, check the player it uses for updating that as well. The PCI simple communications controller, click the arrow next to it then double click the item shown to see what exactly it is, just to confirm if it is a dial up modem or something else and let us know please. Nev.
  21. If you can tell us which make and model and possibly how old your router is, we can maybe be able to say which may be best, however after that it depends on your internet connection speed, because if that is low, it won't make any real difference any way. Nev.
  22. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/i5pv9u.gif Drat it, I went too far and missed the turn off. Nev.
  23. There is a video rental shop not too far away, in fact walking distance, however considering the area, most of the stuff they have is all Bollywood Indian stuff, though the shop seems to do well with folk in there even late in the evening. Technology wise though things are changing rapidly with not much seeming to last more than a few years. The advent of the mobile devices, starting with just a phone, then very soon after that the ability to send a text messages, rapidly followed by phones with a camera, till now they are a small and complete computer. As we are seeing here, they are taking over from the desktop and laptop computers, especially for the social website use, with even folks using them to post here about whatever may be wrong with their laptop or desktop. What the next generation of technology may be, I cannot even guess, as some of the previous things, I wouldn't have thought there could even be such a demand for them. Who knows what will be round the next corner. Nev.
  24. Hi Steve, Further to Seedy's advice the image being back to front, or if you like a mirror image, may be something within the control panel perhaps if there is some controls for the camera? In the mean time I have found a support page that may be of some help, for that web cam here :- http://www.apple.com/uk/support/isight/ If all else fails, at least just like a mirror, you will be able to comb your hair. :D Try combing your hair with an ordinary camera where the image is the correct way round, and you will see what I mean. :D Nev.
  25. Hi, I used to have a much earlier version and didn't have that sort of problem, however I have found first a set up guide, possibly a bit more comprehensive than the usual quick set up guide that comes with the printer which may help in showing something you might have missed. have a look here :- http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c00312443 Also, will it print from a scan, have you tried that? Also, it might sound daft, but have you removed the protective sticker over the print head on the cartridges? Nev.
