Also further to what Ken has rightly said, I notice it comes without any sort of security anti-virus pre installed, do not put the laptop on line except very briefly to download at least Windows own full security program "Microsoft Security Essentials" if it is not pre installed. Once downloaded, install it, before going back on line. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on before going on line. Nev.

Typing tutor programs.
Plastic Nev replied to Plastic Nev's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks for that etavares, and the warning about the download and where from. I will add, If from a reputable download site or "Mirror" may be the safest for the free programs. If a paid for program, I would be seeking an outlet where the disk can be bought. Also it would be wise to seek out information regarding reputation of any maker or distributor of such a program. Nev. -
As the title says this is about typing tutorial programs, as such there are quite a few free programs available. As part of the self learning and the program monitoring the learners progress, they quite often include a keylogger as part of the way the program picks up on keying mistakes. I know from experience that most anti-virus and anti-malware programs will pick up on the fact that a keylogger is present. First does that keylogger pose a security risk by the fact it is there? Secondly, if no security risk, is it safe to tell your anti-virus to ignore that keylogger? An interesting question no doubt, but people who wish to learn to type quickly and make better use of their keyboard, will find any answers useful. Nev.

[Solved] Remove P C Performer by Performersoft
Plastic Nev replied to haley's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
By request on a different forum, someone actually tried it, and it does. After all it is free to re-install it so why not? I also laughed too as it does strike you as funny. A program that will quite happily commit suicide!:D -
A great shame that as it makes it a little more difficult to decide what could be at fault. You could try leaving all connected except the CD/DVD drives, including floppy if there is one, and try again. If no joy from that, I am a little stuck as to what to suggest next as it could be a few things at fault, including the mother board itself. I hope someone else has an idea where to look next. Nev.

Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. That sounds rather bad, if the original power supply has definitely failed, quite often they take the motherboard out as well when they go. First, did this computer ever give a single beep at start up? some do, some don't but if it did, are there any beeps now? Here is a check if it did beep before, Turn off at the mains, then disconnect all cables to hard drive, disk drive, keyboard, mouse, leave that four pin plug out, and just leave the twenty or twenty four pin power connector to the motherboard, nothing else connected except the start button, power back on and press the start button, Any beeps now? Nev.

OK, that has narrowed it down to the card, can you tell us the make and model of the faulty card, we may be able to find the right drivers for it to download. Worth a try if it is only drivers and not the card frazzled. Nev.

Admin password not working
Plastic Nev replied to Andream's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Oh dear, I had no idea she was that young, however, it can only be down to you and her to sort out the password she originally put in, it can only be either the wrong word, or spelling incorrect, maybe the first time it was put in it may have been miss spelled then. Best of luck Andrea. Nev. -
views on Trusteer Rapport?
Plastic Nev replied to DAIPWYSO's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I could make a comment on that scepticOfCheltenham, but I would get in trouble for highly political views, lets just say, we hope we don't fall out with Isreal. In all seriousness, the relevant security people should have checked it out for signs of that sort of thing. If they haven't, let this be a question to them to do so. Nev. -

To add to Jelly Beans post, I am sorry but must point you to the rules here= http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/11463-New-to-Free-PC-Help-Forum-Rules Pay particular attention to rule 5. We can only suggest that your daughter opens the machine, or that there is some spelling incorrect. Have you also taken into consideration, that your daughter may not want you gaining access to her machine any way? nev. -
[Solved] Remove P C Performer by Performersoft
Plastic Nev replied to haley's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Just to add, I and quite a few other advisor's use Revo, it is certainly better at removing unwanted or no further use programs than the Windows own uninstaller. Also, believe it or not, if there comes a time to remove Revo, say someone comes up with an even better remover, Revo will uninstall itself. Nev. -

No, not a slap down, just a helpful comment, or at least I hope it will be taken that way. You are very welcome to help out, also if something comes up that can be of help to you, that is also no problem and I hope that does happen. We are all still able to learn something new from someone who has seen something different and found the way round it. The one thing that does get to us as a way of explaining it, is those who are only registering in order to post spam. You have been honest so far, and I hope we can rely on that honesty. Nev. -
Ah, good, and it looks like I am preaching to the converted  We just need to convert mum now eh? Ha ha. Just to add for when you get the enclosure, providing the hard drive will run, it should show up in the same way as a flash drive, and will possibly have wording similar to "Local disk (K:)" "K" is whatever drive letter the system allocates to it. Do not click any button in that opening window. Dismiss or close it, and go to "Computer" from the start button, it should show there, right click on it, and you should then see the option to "Scan with Malwarebytes" or whatever anti-virus she has. In the case of malwarebytes, it will open, then scan the drive for you. Please remember to use the "Safe to remove hardware" before disconnecting it. I know of folk who have done damage by forgetting that with a disk drive. Nev.

Once the hard drive is fitted to the enclosure, then plugged into her computer, providing that the drive then shows up and can be accessed on your mothers computer. Then before doing anything else, and just to reassure her, you should then be able to direct her anti-virus to scan your drive first, to make sure it is clean of anything unwanted. A good idea would also to scan it with Malwarebytes. If she doesn't already have that, the free version can be downloaded and installed to her computer from here= http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Just click on the "Download now" button on that page, not the "buy now" one. That particular software is one used and recommended by us to anyone suspecting they may have a virus or other type of malware. It is very good and used as a first step by most security experts. It will find and remove most common and not so common problems if they are there, and can be directed at a plugged in hard drive. Once installed, it is a good thing to have, and to run a scan regularly of whatever computer it is installed on. Nev.

Advice required on new pc (under £400)
Plastic Nev replied to yanbart's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I can add a little bit more towards understanding multiple core processors. If we go back in time a little, processors only had one core and that was the processor. You say data needs to be handled, sorry but you have to wait in a queue while the last lot is sorted. Then first they came up with a two core processor, the data could then be split between the two cores, as actually each core is a processor. so the output of processed data was more in any given time, even if both the single core, and the twins were running at say 2.8GHtz twice the amount of data could be handled at once, hence the end result is a faster running PC. Obviously, four or more cores then means even more data can be handled in the same time period, couple that with a high clock speed and the computer will run even faster still in the overall sense. The next thing is still in the background, which is the problem with the Panasonic software if they still have done little in the way of upgrading it to run on Windows 7 64bit. I found windows own moviemaker is fine for general editing, your computer may or may not come with Windows Live Moviemaker. Worry not if it doesn't, as it is a free download from Microsoft, I also downloaded and installed the also free ordinary Windows Moviemaker for Vista, it runs quite well on W7 so no worries there. Add to that, a search on google will reveal many other video editing free software is available. A case of install and try it out in most cases. Of course you can buy software and some decent stuff is available at reasonable prices, which of course will give you more editing options. I myself eventually pulled out the wallet, blew out the dust, released all the moths, and bought the Corel Video Studio 2010 just to give an example which didn't cost too much at the time. Nev. -

More to the point, some of us, advisor's I mean, also run a computer business, but we do it for fun as volunteers, we do not advertise the business. By all means join in and help, you could be helping some one who has little cash or be miles away from you and may not be in a position to come for your professional help. please bear that in mind, then you will be welcome. upgrading the graphics on a computer
Plastic Nev replied to nightslicer's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
In all seriousness, the money needed to be spent in order to upgrade that computer to do what you are asking, would be better spent on a new machine more up to date. Windows XP is now very seriously out of date to start off with, the mother board and processor will also be well behind technologically, save yourself time and money, be more patient and save up for a new computer. It is the best way forwards in the end. Nev. -
Icons do not align to grid despite the setting
Plastic Nev replied to Sebastian42's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
OK, glad to hear you got it sorted out, but please remember we are all volunteers, doing this help because we want to. When you are paying money, then you can get angry. Also we are working in a remote fashion, we don't have your computer on our desk or work bench, we depend on you telling us the knowledge you have, in order for us to help you. I know it can be frustrating when something has gone wrong and you cannot find an answer, but it doesn't help lashing out at us. Nev. -
Hi Trippy, I can only find out that it is a part of the Windows operating system, as I found here= http://www.what-is-exe.com/filenames/wmiprvse-exe.html However a further search found this, which has a scanner to search for related errors right at the top of this page here= http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/wmiprvse/19202/ Hope that is of help for both understanding the process and sorting the problem. I have an earlier slightly different version of that laptop, it is the satellite A 60. It is a small panel or cover on the right hand side edge, more or less in the middle, the small cover is held on with just one screw on mine. You shouldn't need to remove the entire back. Once the screw is removed the small cover lifts out from the edge nearest the screw. Try not to lose the screw once removed as it actually screws into a hole in the hard drive or a bridge piece fitted to the hard drive therefore holding the hard drive in place as well. Nev.

Windows 7 Live Movie maker Preview not working
Plastic Nev replied to Aldaz108's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
OK, having read Randy's post, and thanks for that Wiki Link Randy, I suggest running the video through AVC first, AVC is "Any Video Converter" download it from here= http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ It is free software, make sure you click the link for the free version. I use it to convert all sorts of video with no problem, just run the video through it to convert it to standard AVI format, you should then be able to use it in the Windows Live Movie maker. Nev. -
Windows 7 Live Movie maker Preview not working
Plastic Nev replied to Aldaz108's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, the simplest answer with free software such as Windows Live Moviemaker is uninstall, download a fresh copy and reinstall from fresh, quite often it is all that may be needed. I have it and with no problems, I also downloaded the slightly older Moviemaker for Vista, I find that a bit easier to use as it is still based on the older XP version, still runs well on Windows 7. nev. -
Hi, the clicking and grinding noises do suggest a hard drive about to fail, you are right to get everything backed up first and as quickly as possible before the drive fails. Is the Vista on a different hard drive, not a partition on the same hard drive? I get the impression that is the case, but can you confirm it and if so which of the two hard drives is giving the problems. Edit to add, is this the same PC that you had a problem with the graphics card, as posted in the graphics section of hardware? Nev.
