Automatically save to F Drive
Plastic Nev replied to pioneer1963's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
First just click and hold down on the file, or even full folder, you want to copy over to the hard drive "F" and drag it and drop it onto the "F" drive is the quickest. In most cases it will copy only, that actually is best, that way you can first check the file has copied over correctly and is intact. Once sure the file is OK, then you can delete the file on "C" drive. As far as I know there isn't a way to change anything so that things automatically go to the new "F" drive as "C" is always the default path. The only thing that can be directed over to it is downloads, done via your download manager in the browser. Otherwise, as I said earlier you will have to navigate stuff over manually. Nev. -
Hi again, what I can tell you is that he overclocked it to get it to run at that speed, have you overclocked yours? if not it will be or should be running at the default 2.8Ghz. Underclocking from that speed will be detrimental to its performance and certainly not recommended. If you are absolutely sure the heatsink and fan are both OK for thermal paste and correctly seated, then have a look round for quieter fans or better heatsinks, I cannot make any recommendations myself as I haven't needed to do anything with my own or others fans. Best bet is see what you can find on line then get back to us, hopefully there may be other members available to comment by then. The holiday period may be great, but it does take folk away when you need 'em :D Nev.

Hi Tony and Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. If the monitor is plugged in to the monitor out socket on the graphics card, then yes the card is working. Secondly, the processor sounds like it is heating up pretty quickly, being a home built system, did you place the heat sink and fan assembly onto the processor, or was it all pre assembled when you bought it? I ask that because there may not be sufficient heat transfer paste between the processor and heat sink, or the heatsink is not properly mounted, whichever way, it sounds to me like it isn't taking away the heat very well. Especially if the fan is going up to full speed in a short time of playing the games. If however all is OK, then there are quieter fans around. Nev.

What graphics card should I get ?
Plastic Nev replied to TurkishDelight's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, just so you know you aren't being ignored, Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I am no graphics or game expert more a sound and music guy. However I must let you know that the power supply may have to be changed and upgraded as well to match the power requirements of whatever card you eventually choose. Please bear with us over the Christmas holiday period as most folk will be away, but once we have someone on line who knows more than me, they will give you the best advice for the card you need. Automatically save to F Drive
Plastic Nev replied to pioneer1963's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I am not too sure I understand exactly what you want to do here, do you mean how to transfer your data to the new hard drive? If you mean new data such as music from a CD or Photo's from camera or even video you normally would choose where to put it each time any way. If on the other hand you already have as I do a folder situated at present on my "C" drive where downloads go to automatically, which was set up in my browser, just navigate to downloads in whichever browser you are using, then set it to send to a new folder on your new drive. Providing the drive is permanently connected. Hope I have understood your question correctly, Nev. -
Hi Clair, a little confusing but trying to work it out ha ha. I assume it is the data on the DVD that is giving a problem, if so do have any idea as to how or what backup program created the DVD? the DVD data may be in a compressed format so the program that created it will need to be installed first to de compress the data properly if it was created by such a backup program. Hi and welcome to Free PC help. I am no expert but I am a little confused here, one picture I would have liked to see is the Windows 7 disk because I think you may be trying to install a 64 bit system onto a 32 bit computer and processor, it just isn't going to work if that is the case. However, at the moment no hard drive is showing, so have you checked the connections? are they fully seated? To be sure of that pull the plug right out, check the pins are OK and not bent, then push the connector firmly back in. There are two drives, and though a rare thing but both drives may have failed. The other possibility may be power supply fault but I doubt it as most of the system does run. The only thing left to try is to remove the RAM sticks if more than one, just leave one in and see what results you get, if no change swap to another stick. If none of that helps, I will have to leave it for one of our other members who may have more knowledge, as RAID systems are not something I know much about. Nev.

Want to watch phone video clips in slow mo!
Plastic Nev replied to iainwith2is's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, you should have the Windows Moviemaker already installed if you are running WindowsXP service pack two or three. I am not sure if it will accept MP4, but if not there are a few good converters around that will convert to WMV format so that Windows Moviemaker can handle it. Once in Moviemaker, drop it onto the timeline and you can then expand the visible length of the clip and drag the cursor anywhere on the movie to view frame by frame, at any speed both forward and backward. Let us know if you need a converter or further help. Nev. -
OK, While Ken is away I will suggest you put the drive into the other SATA computer as an extra drive, not as replacement, you need the original drive with Windows running, the extra drive should then show up in "Computer", if so go into it just the same way you would if it were a pen or flash drive and copy all the important data you wish to keep. That is the important thing. Next would be to do a check disk on the extra drive by using the working computer to perform it. After that we could then try a SFC /scannow on the drive, though I do expect errors on that. Once we are both sure that all important data is retrieved from the drive, the final thing would be to put it back in its own computer, reformat and reinstall Windows therefore starting from scratch. If the latter fails, or there are problems accessing the data while in the other computer, it may well be a failed hard drive. Nev.

In fact this might be an impossible task as things now stand, that is because the BIOS itself may need to be configured to look for and use the external monitor. However because you can't see the BIOS screen due to the malfunctioning laptop monitor, I can't see a way round it. The only answer is to get the laptop monitor repaired I am afraid. nev.

In Kens absence I may be able to help further if needed. Nev.

Can you get it to at least the pre safe mode screen and select "Last known good configuration"? I just left you some advice which contains that on CHF. We would appreciate it if you stuck to one forum at a time, fair enough to go elsewhere if not getting the right help on one forum, but trying to run the same question on several forums at once can only lead to confusion, and in some cases conflicting advice that could make the situation worse. I hope you understand. Nev.

[Solved] XP black screen on start up
Plastic Nev replied to Gotalife's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
To add to this, it could be the backlight in the monitor either the backlight tube nearly ready to go altogether, or the backlight power module. To get a clue about that, plug in the monitor and before it actually does light up and come on, view it from one side, do you see a faint outline of what should be on screen? If it is a good make of monitor and expensive to replace, it may be worth while replacing both the lamp and/or the power module board. Nev. -

samsung recovery solution 4
Plastic Nev replied to borofc's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, I don't know that particular backup program but I assume it is a full image of your disk. If so the answer will be no it will only work on the original PC. That is because being a full image it will contain the original Windows operating system. Windows is clever enough to recognise either the hardware it was registered to, and therefore will work, or will recognise a different hardware environment and refuse to boot. Nev. -
Hello Liz and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I actually helped Noha build the Arc before installing the two generators, (everything else went in there two by two) and wiring them up. Ken was involved in fitting the radio.http://bak2moi.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/laughing_smiley.gif

[Solved] XP black screen on start up
Plastic Nev replied to Gotalife's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, do you know what the boot sequence is in the BIOS? ideally it should be hard drive first, as it looks like it is looking at the external hard drive as a source to boot from. The fact the external drive now has your daughters machine backed up on it, may be confusing the BIOS as a source to be looked at perhaps. Even if the main hard drive is selected as the first boot device, it may still be looking at the external drive as this also is a hard drive. It may come down to the only way for a quick boot up, is disconnect the external drive when shut down. Nev. Edit, woops cross posted with you Ken, similar thoughts though. -
The Microsoft Windows Media Player or the Toshiba Express Media Player, is what I was referring to. The Microsoft Windows Media Player is the one that is usually opened automatically by any of the sound source things you mention. The Toshiba Media Player also may come into it, but usually only if either made the default player in its settings or by manually selecting that player to play something. I suggest opening the Toshiba player and trying that to play music or other sound file and see what happens, if the sound is OK, the fault must be in the Windows Media player. You say it is version 10, it may need to be updated anyway as the present version is now at 12. If the fault is there in both players, then we may be back to sorting out the correct drivers for the sound system. Nev.

It is a good thing to do is removing the unwanted stuff that comes preloaded with new machines, but with the right advice for things you don't know what they are!! I am quite happy to continue with that and so will many others on this forum, it is up to you if you wish to carry on or not. Nev.
